9 Houses evacuated at Lannex

Soon after the evacuation boulders the size of cars started rolling down the mountain
The new year started on a somewhat low note for residents of Lannex North, south of Steelpoort when an earth slide occurred on the mountain adjacent to their houses. General Manager of Eastern Chrome Mines, Mr Emile Britz said the slide is not the result of mining activities in the area, but described the occurrence as a natural disaster, with the high rainfall in 2013 probably the main direct cause of the slide. ECM mine management immediately went into action when the landslide started, evacuating and relocating the residents of nine houses at the bottom of the mountain temporarily to safe residences. Soon after the evacuation boulders the size of cars started rolling down the mountain. Water and electricity supply at the houses were also interrupted and by Tuesday this week, access to the area was strictly prohibited. Mr Britz expressed the opinion that the houses are not in danger and that only three houses, nearest to the mountain, will possibly be damaged. But, we are not taking any chances, the safety of people are paramount. Meetings with residents are taking place on a daily basis to keep them informed of the situation. They will only be allowed to move back to their houses when the area is completely safe. Distressed residents are also provided with food by mine management. One of the residents, Mr Karools Smit, told Platinum Gazette I grew up in that house as a boy. After school I left Steelpoort and when I returned and started working in the area, me and my wife moved into the same house. It is one of the three houses more in danger than the other, but no serious damage was suffered to date. We lived 16 years in that house and it is kind of sad to be chased from it by a mountain. We were holidaying in Mozambique and when we returned we received an urgent SOS to return home because of the crisis. Platinum Gazette photographed the mountain from a safe distance with a long zoom lens on Tuesday, but rolling boulders could clearly be heard.

Celebrations at Calvin College as distinctions roll in

Calvin College received a total of 75 distinctions in the 2013 final matric examination. The school had a 93.4% pass rate and of the 90 grade 12 candidates 42% qualify for further studies in a bacherlors degree and 38% for a diploma. The school had three learners with four distinctions each. They are: Jeanette Nkwana (81% average), Harriet Magale (79% average) and Millet Kae (74% average). A 100% pass rate was achieved in the following subjects: Sepedi Home Language, English Home Language and English First Additional Language, Mathematical Literacy and Life Orientation. 11 Distinctions were achieved in Sepedi Home Language and 7 in Accounting. The pass rate in other subjects were: Afrikaans 98%, Mathematics 92%, Physical Science 82%, Life Science 99%, Computer Application Technology 96%, Business Studies 97%, Accounting 98% and Economics 96%. Ms Lorraine Britz, principal of Calvin College said: We are very proud of our learners. Congratulations to all those who passed and managed to obtain distinctions. This year we will continue to work towards a 100% pass rate.

Driving like the devil - without a license plate

In December Platinum Gazette photographed the taxi shown on the left as it drove past a group of traffic officers. The driver of Platinum Gazettes vehicle was keeping to the 60km/h speed limit when the taxi came flying past, speeding past the traffic officers with no license plate and a door that barely closes. One of the officials was busy with adriver in a vehicle, one manned the speed trap. One officer can be seen on the photograph to the left in conversation with a colleague manning the speed trap. They did not seem to care or notice that a vehicle with such obvious faults just drove past. The taxi eventually turned into the Twin City Taxi rank where passengers disembarked hopefully thankful for their safe arrival in a scorro-scorro. In the same week a pointsman at the Burgersfort Mall intersection was also spotted having a hard time as some taxi drivers simply ignored his signals.

KB 300 LX (extended cab)

Isuzu bakkie, a desirable thing for most people when they have loads to transport and to do the work they have to on all sorts of terrain. The Isuzu extended cab 4 x 2 bakkie with the 3 litre D-Teq diesel powerplant is one of the offerings in the market not to be overlooked and certainly fits the desirable frame like a hand fit in a glove. Platinum Gazette took the bakkie, compliments of Westvaal Steelpoort, for a spin on route to photograph the landslide at Lannex near Steelpoort on Tuesday. General impressions are good. The bakkies interior is very comfortable, although not luxury car plush (and it isnt meant to be). Al the creature comforts are there, from climate control, bluetooth telephony, front loader CD and RDS radio with mp3 and USB audio input, cruise control, multifunction controls on the steering wheel and powered collapsible side mirrors for when you need to squeeze into a tight spot (like between two taxis or the devil and the deep blue sea). This is not a family car (only two seats), but ideal for a couple or should you carry a lot of stuff around that you do not want on the back of the bakkie (that is where the really, really big and heavy stuff, 1142 kg, go). Open the Rolls Royce style suicide doors to the extended area at the back of the front seats, there are lots of space for luggage, with an included lockable bin for everything from valuable equipment to spices One little gripe though. The female part of the couple who own a brand new extended cab bakkie will miss the vanity mirror on the drivers side sunshade (a few men as well, you know the modern man). Driving the bakkie is a pleasure. The powerplant propels the vehicle with purpose and with 130 kW @ 36000 r/min and torque of 380 Nm between 1800 and 2800 r/min on tap, there is enough grunt for a full load or to fulfil the manufacturers promise that the optional towbar will easily be up to a 3500 kg trailer with overrun brake (750 kg unbraked). So, there you have it, more power that you will probably need to do whatever you want to do with the bakkie. The vehicle sits comfortable on the road and the engine noise is not intrusive or irritating. We did not have the opportunity to load the bakkie, but suspect that it will even feel better with a few kilogram at the back (this thing needs to work). On the rough the bakkie also handled with aplomb. We did not need to try the rear diff lock, but it is fitted and may be needed in this area from time to time. Quality of fit and finish was good, but as soon as the newspapers reporter shifted the vehicle into reverse the first time, the gear lever knob turned around, as if it was not fitted properly. When needing a bit of luxury and interior space on a workhorse bakkie, this one should be on top of your short list. Definitely not cheap at close to R360 thousand, but worth it if it suits your needs. Get it at Westvaal Steelpoort, tel 013 230 9230.

Debt as a problem in South Africa:

Christmas and New Year has come and gone and many South Africans are starting the year with a heap of debt. At the end of last year there were more than 20.2 million credit-active consumers listed at credit bureaus. The number of people with bad debt records increased by 71 000 people in the last quarter of 2013. Only about 51.9 % of credit-active consumers are in good standing with about 48% struggling with bad debt records. Platinum Gazette interviewed readers before Christmas and at the beginning of the year to find out what they think about these statistics and how they planned to survive the festive period and start the New Year. Mnr. Brian Muir en Me. Wilrie Muir s: Kerstyd gaan oor Jesus. Jou werk is nooit vir seker nie, so dink mooi voor jy skuld maak. By hulle is Micari. Mr Thabo Kumalo said: I had a budget for December and I now have a back to school budget. It is too easy to make a loan. People now go to loan sharks because theyve spent all their money in December.

Mr Mpho Mokoena said: People dont work, they just get grants from government and then they can get credit on that. Theyll never be able to repay! This is bringing our economy down. People spent too much over Christmas and now they make loans for school things. With him is his wife Refilwe and their son Adamelang.

Me.

Ms Mpho Ntimane said: Those statistics cannot be! It is easy to get a loan and that is why many people have bad records. You must budget in time for the festive season so that you wont need to make debt.

Me.

Mr Edward Kgoete said: It is too easy to get loans. People must not make loans for Christmas, they have to budget. This was not the first Christmas ever there is Christmas every year. I saved up Christmas time.

Ms Arabia Mohlala said: People should have limited their spending over Christmas. I saved for Christmas. People on grants and pensions should not be allowed to make loans. Only people with permanent jobs and a good income should be allowed to make a loan.

Ms Gugu Mkhonto said: You have to budget before Christmas so you can cope in January. I budget. People end up having lots of loans because they dont budget.

Mr MD Mampa said: It is not so easy to make a loan these days. There are many people affected by bad credit records. It takes a lot of time to get your name removed from a bad credit record. People should stay away from the loan sharks you only benefit them and they dont really help you. We made it a happy Christmas within our limits.

Mr Danil Phasha said: Yes, it is true. It is because living expenses went up so much that people have so much debt. Christmas is to me like any other day. People should save if they want to do something special. They must also remember that grants are for food. People should not borrow money on a grant income.

Mr Davis Makua said: Most peoples living wage is too low. They cannot afford to buy everything and that is why they go to the loan sharks. This must be a lesson to the young generation. Go to school to try and get good jobs.

your views at Christmas & New Year

Mr Steve Mosoma said: It is true that people have that much debt. Hopefully they did not misuse their money at Christmas. I saved because I know Christmas is coming. It is too easy to get a loan, but it becomes difficult to pay it back. With him is Ashley.

Ms Pontsho Morena said: There are many loan sharks doing business illegally. So it is easy for people to get loans. It is not fair. People who get pension and grants should not be able to get loans on those payouts. It is unfair to the kids who should benefit from the grants. Loan sharks charge too much interest as well. People should watch how they spend their money. They should buy only what they really need. In 2013 I did not save. It was the worst possible year for me. I plan to start saving from now for this years Christmas. Although I did not save, I enjoyed myself anyway. Right: Mr Collins Zamba said: People must learn to save and live within their means. The majority of people who are getting paid do not get enough to cover all their expenses. They must however try. The government and police must act to prevent people from borrowing from illegal cash loans and on grants. Illegal cash loans must be closed down. Ive used my bonus during December.

Mnr. Mense moet elke jaar budget vir persente vir Kersfees. Almal vergeet waaroor Kersfees regtig gaan.

Mr. Elvis Nkuna said: You must live within your budget. If you earn R100. Live on R100. People must learn to control themselves.

Mnr.

Mnr.

Cash loans maak mense dood.

Mr Sipho Nzimande said: Most South Africans fail to plan for year end. We are sometimes forced to take more than we earn. We must not just make a braai because we see our neighbours do it. We get ourselves into problems with debt. People giving loans and accounts must check that the person applying is suitable and will be able to pay it back. Dont just jump into a loan because you want to marry a wife!

Mnr.

Youth empowerment seminar in Burgersfort

A Youth Empowerment Seminar was recently held in Burgersfort. South Africas future is in the hands of the youth. One of the young speakers of the day, Ms Sheila Mmutle (2012-2013 Miss Limpopo) shared a persuasive statement that the word impossible does not exist but only a state of mind which chains or blocks a persons destiny. We need to know that the word freedom and its implication have got no meaningful role in our country until everyone is free from poverty, illiteracy; exploitation and defrauding by the elites. Young people should shun menacing activities and involve themselves in activities that are self uplifting which will keep them abreast with knowledge to thrive in their lives. Let us all play our respective roles to try to build a promising future for our next generation said Mr Pabalelo Mabilo, one of the days organisers. Work at Tubatse Golf Course progressing fast

The upgrading of Tubatse Chrome Clubs golf course is almost finished. Over the past few months the greens were upgraded, irrigation systems replaced and much more. The grass on the greens were planted by hand. (Photograph bottom right). The course is expected to be opened somewhere in February. The club thanks all members for their patience.
