Fijian Woman Fighting For Her Life In Sydney

Continued From Page 1
discovered a section of dead grass which may have been contaminated. In May members of the Fijian Indian community in Sydney wrote to leaders asking for help after Chetty was seen begging for money and already severely burnt outside a shopping centre. Acid attack is a form of assault on the rise in India which aims to disfigure the victims, often because they have spurned sexual advances by men. Ms Chetty has told police she was approached by a man who doused her with a chemical about a week ago in a Liverpool park. She is in Concord Hospital where she is being treated for burns so severe that police said she could not be physically identified. Residents say Ms Chetty had been seen sitting in a green car - which police believe doubled as her home - in the days before she was taken to hospital. The car has since disappeared. Gavin O'Brien says he first saw Ms Chetty outside his house on Boxing Day, but she resisted his offer of help. "I kind of feel bad I didn't call an ambulance or something on Boxing Day," he said. Police say Ms Chetty sought assistance from residents on New Year's Eve and was given some food and water. Giola Motti, who phoned police, says she was worried for several days after seeing Ms Chetty in the car near her home. "She was just sitting in her car in a daze, like there was nothing she was looking at. There was a blank look," she said. "(It) just worried me, the state that she was in. The way she walked, how slumped she was, depressed." Ms Motti says she decided to call police after seeing Ms Chetty dragging a bag through the nearby bushland. Victim unable to provide information on attacker Detective Superintendent James Johnson says Ms Chetty is suffering from burns that are "black in nature and unmistakable" and is calling on witnesses to come forward. "I don't believe this woman could have survived for the last week without having some assistance from members of the public," he said. "We do know that on New Year's Eve she did seek assistance from residents and was given some food and water. "I am astounded that anyone could survive this length of time with the horrific injuries that she has." "This is the most unusual thing I have seen in my 41 years in the police." Detective Superintendent Johnson says Ms Chetty has been unable to provide any information to police about her attacker. Her ex-husband is not considered a suspect. Police are still trying to locate her other family members. .

ANZ Closes Money Transfer Account Throughout Pacific

The ANZ Banking Group has closed the accounts that money transfer companies and foreign exchange dealers have held with it. Reserve Bank of Fiji deputy governor, Inia Naiyaga said: This was a business decision arising from this particular banks ongoing assessment of antimoney laundering risks. The situation is however mitigated currently in Fiji, since we have four other banks that are more than willing to service these accounts if they meet the requirements, he said. An ANZ spokesperson said as part of their global compliance program, ANZ had undertaken an extensive review of all money service bureau accounts in the Pacific. Now they have taken proactive steps to exit relationships with those that do not have the robust controls required by ANZ. This is because payments made through money service bureaux are often processed in bulk, which makes it impossible to identify the individual sender and receiver, the spokesperson said. Exiting relationships of this type is a preventative measure and forms part of our robust global anti-money laundering procedures. Change in accounts Reserve Bank has had extensive discussions with ANZ and has been closely monitoring the situation. Mr Naiyaga said: However we expect all its supervised entities including banks to continuously assess and manage emerging risks to their operations. Also we expect banks to ensure that its customers are well informed of the reasons for their accounts closure. Money transfer companies in Fiji such as Western Union Money Transfer, Loftus Foreign Exchange Limited have now moved their accounts to other banks. In Fiji money transfer companies can shift their accounts to other banks at this time, Mr Naiyaga said. FEXCO Pacific general manager Steven Narayan said: We had written to reserve bank on this issue which they said nothing couldnt be done. We have moved our accounts to the Bank of the South Pacific. This after we were given a notice of 30 days to clear our account which was unfair but an extension 50 days was given. Loftus Foreign Exchange Limited Ajay Kumar said even though they had two bank accounts they were affected by the action taken by ANZ. We have moved our account to the other bank after been given a notice a month ago by ANZ however they did not disclose the main reason behind the closure, he said. Justification All banks operating in Fiji, including branches of Australian banks are required to consult the Reserve Bank before taking such a decision. BSP country manager Kevin McCarthy said: We fully comply with Fijis and the BSP groups policies on anti money laundering which includes assessments of the activities of our clients. Mr Naiyaga said: This bank will have to justify the reasons for taking such a decision and this is to ensure the protection of depositors. As well as the licensed institutions, with no significant downside effect to the financial system. Again, noting that only one bank in Fiji has taken this decision there is no significant impact on the economy at this time. Inward personal remittances were recorded at $270.6 million cumulative to October 2013.

A Fiji-born woman, Monika Chetty, 39, who has been sleeping in her car because she could no longer afford her rent is in critical condition with burns to more than 80 per cent of her body believed to have been sustained from an acid attack. In an update provided to Cheryl BrownIrava, First Secretary (Acting Head of Mission) at Fiji High Commission in Canberra, New South Wales police detective Luke Hefferman confirmed that Chetty is an Australian citizen who was born in Fiji and moved over when she was young. He also stated that she has spoken to the family and they have requested that they not be contacted by the High Commission and are also not seeking any assistance from the commission. Fiji's consul general in Sydney, Losana Ravuso, also confirmed that Chetty is awake and is in stable condition at the Concord Hospital in Sydney. Green Valley Police station have also informed the Fijian High Commission that her estranged husband, father, sister and children have gone to see Chetty in the hospital. According to Ravuso, Monica had cut herself off from her family for the past two years and from her estranged husband for more than that. Her sister said that she has not heard from her for the past two years. Her burns have been described by police as "black in nature and unmistakable", walked through Sydney suburbs for up to a week after being doused with chemicals. But residents on the street said they had seen her walking early in the morning and late at night with bandages covering her face for several months. A resident, Natalie Lorizzo said she often carried full rubbish bags and hung her clothing out on a fence separating the street and bush. When she was found, Chetty did not seek help for her burns and didnt want to be taken to hospital for treatment. Police searched Bigge Park and

WHO wants to be a millionaire? Well, 4 one most people dream and wish to be and of course, the easiest way is by winning a lottery. Here, in Fiji, the lottery has become quite popular after Australian Tattslotto came to our shores some two decades ago. Tattslotto outlets and agents are found in almost every town, today. Some Fijians are regular players, indulging themselves in the commonly known games Powerball or Saturday lotto but come festive season, more consumers fork out a lot of money hoping to win. Many such consumers had purchased their Fiji Tattslotto ticket for $53million, are counting on their lucky stars for good news. But a recent complaint investigated by the Consumer Council of Fiji has opened a can of worms, unveiling a crucial issue, which every individual or syndicate groups playing this lottery need to ask, "Have my numbers been entered into the Tattersalls online gaming system in Melbourne, Australia?" If you think that the game you played gets recorded immediately via a direct link to Tattersall's gaming system in Melbourne then you are wrong. According to the consumer when he visited the agent to check his winning numbers, he was told that he had not on a number of critical questions: won anything. * If a consumer pays a Fiji Tattslotto After checking the numbers manually, agent for a game, it is expected that the complainant found that he won his/her numbers will be fed into the in fifth division prize pool of $4m. Why was such a disclaimer not printed on the receipts issued to consumers who played in Australia from different states? This case has led the council to ponder process any entry, syndicate entry or syndicate share otherwise than in accordance with these rules." * If agents fail to enter the numbers in a draw because of unforeseen circumstance such as power failure, internet failure, consumers can understand but why should consumers take the risk of paying for a lottery where they may not be in the draw. Why is there no cut-off time to allow for internal processes? As far as consumers are concerned, transaction is complete after the exchange of money and holding a valid receipt for its payments. By hiding behind disclaimers does not make the Tattslotto efficient, accountable and transparent. The council is adamant that Fiji Tattslotto must amend its receipt to remove the disclaimer and disclose the terms and conditions of the game. Consumers should also check their numbers manually after the draw and not rely on machines. * This is a regular contribution from the Consumer Council of Fiji.

The LTA has once again raised concern at the large number of drivers using mobile phones while driving. While the use of phones has proven to have made people's lives easier, the authority is standing firm on its decision to penalise drivers found using their phones on the roads. Authority spokesman Iliesa Sokia said: "The authority is particularly concerned with the new smart phones entering the market which can perform anything, especially conducting transactional bill payments, payments of hire-purchase accounts or transferring money that can be done

"The use of smart phones has eased standing in long queues and also saves travelling time and money, but they must not be used while driving. "The authority is urging users to be responsible." Mr Sokia said the regulation was clear that no driver must be involved in any two-way communication and this "also covers those seen texting or reading texts messages while driving".

And nurses are likely to lose their practising licence if they do not improve their performance and conduct at work in the Health Ministry's bid to raise the quality and standard of service. The concerns were raised as nursing director Silina Waqa-Ledua spoke about the absence of a smiling frontier among nurses in public practice. "Why does the public lament, where are the smiling nurses, those old nurses?" Mrs Waqa-Ledua said in an interview. She said the Public Service Commission had set out strict guidelines for nurses who would be assessed on their annual performance. "Right now the issue here is the continuous assessment of the nursing practice we are looking at in general the annual performance assessment that was instituted by the PSC last year and will go strong this year, so everything is going to be done on merit," she said. Mrs Waqa-Ledua said nurses who did not perform up to par could lose their licence. "The second issue is licensing, so if you (nurses) do not perform, you can lose your licence to practise. That is the message I want to send to the nurses. This is under the Nursing Decree 2011." She said the ministry was looking at improving the nursing practice and services and make nurses more responsive to the needs of the public. "They need to be responsive, act professionally and ethically and improve their services, practice, and the way to do it is already in place. "We have continued to share the whole idea with them; we have continued to have some disciplinary action instituted on those nurses that breach ethics and professional issues, so they just need to improve." Mrs Waqa-Ledua said the ministry would also be dealing with educational institutions that train nurses. "We are dealing with schools that produce nurses; things have to start from there. If you train a half-baked nurse, I get a half-baked nurse in the service that's it." Mrs Waqa-Ledua said if nurses were trained professionally, they wouldn't be rude to people.

Agriculture Ministry Plans To Increase Exports This Year

The Ministry of Agricultures ultimate goal for its 2014 programmes is to increase exports and reduce imports through the production of crops, livestock and bi-products. The ministrys deputy secretary, Uraia Waibuta said, in late December, the ministry had undergone a consultation process where it reviewed its Annual 6 Corporate Plan for 2014. As the ministry progresses in encouraging farmers to produce for 6 the export markets, our priority will always be on ensuring that we produce enough for our home consumption or domestic markets. Govt Pays Out $21Mln Plus For Term 1

Six additional schools, two are infant schools, have been included in the free education grant offered by the Fijian Government. Including the six schools, a total of 904 schools have been issued their grant for the first school term, costing government a total of $21, 949,014 since disbursement of funds started last Thursday. The two infant schools were opened in term three of school last year in Bua and Yasawa. The other four schools were not included in the initial tally of 898 schools. Education Ministrys Permanent Secretary Dr Brij Lal has appealed to all school heads to check the school bank accounts to confirm that payment have been received. The Ministry of Educations accounts section will assist schools with any inconvenience, Dr Lal said. Schools heads are also reminded that the disbursement of the term two and three grants will only be determined after the receipt of the audited and endorsed 2013 school financial report and AGM minutes by 31 May 2014. Discrepancies in the school account may prompt the PSE to intervene and institute disciplinary actions or legal proceedings against the school or individual implicated, Dr Lal said.

ABOUT 86 per cent of Arya Pratinidhi Sabha schools in the country have received their first term grants disbursed by the government. And according to Sabha media relations officer Kamlesh Arya, the first recipients this week were schools in economically-depressed areas. "With the first and second releases, the Sabha is confident all other remaining schools will receive their first term grants," he said. As owners of 22 primary and secondary schools in Fiji, Mr Arya said the Sabha was grateful to the Education Ministry for the early release of the grant. "This has assisted the Sabha in not pursuing overdraft arrangements with its bankers as earlier planned.

Schools Receive Grants

A 38-year-old woman has been arrested and her husband is on the run following the discovery of a marijuana farm during an early morning drug raid in Tailevu. Authorities did not say if her husband, 38, was at home during the raid at Delasese Settlement, only saying that he is still on the run.

Woman, 38, Arrested Over Marijuana Farm

"With funds made available, Sabha school managers have been advised to ensure preparatory work for the 2014 school year is undertaken with due diligence to ensure the readiness of the schools to receive their students. "I urge the parents to ensure their children come well prepared for their education now that the major portion of educational costs is being borne by the government. "There is, however, a need for those parents who still have outstanding school dues for 2013 to make arrangements to pay as the Sabha, through its various school committees and boards, will be pursuing rigorously outstanding dues which stand at $96,000."

Accept Results Warns Police

Police are urging parents and guardians to accept whatever results their children achieve in their external exams. The advice follows previous incidents in which some children took their lives as a result of pressure from within the family upon receiving their results. With the Fiji School Leaving Certificate (FSLC) results scheduled to be released next Tuesday, police chief operations officer ACP Rusiate Tudravu said parents must learn to accept their children's academic abilities. "We request parents to accept their children's results and go for what they achieve rather than be angry because this could lead to them taking their lives," ACP Tudravu said. "We have recorded in the past few years incidents of students taking their lives because their parents could not accept their results. "The FSLC results will be out next week, so we urge parents to avoid such things from happening again." ACP Tudravu also called on children to prepare for the new school year. "We urge children to prepare themselves rather than enjoy the new year celebrations, so they will be ready in two weeks. "Please, be mindful that the force is ready now for the start of school and we will be out in numbers." School starts on January 21.

ABOUT 300 drivers nationwide have been warned they could lose their licence if they continue to violate road rules. The drivers were pulled over by the LTA for violating, among other things, the mobile communications regulation. The drivers were warned during the monthlong Operation Home-Based that covered Christmas and the New Year's Day period. Authority spokesman Iliesa Sokia said majority of those caught were youths with provisional licence between the ages of 18 and 23. "After appearing for show-cause before chief executive officer Naisa Tuinaceva, the drivers were issued warning letters not to reoffend," Mr Sokia said. "Some were found speeding away without considering pedestrians or other motorists

Licence Warning

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said officers found more than 70 plants and $700 cash in the couple's home. The joint operation by the K-9 and Drug Unit was carried out at 3am after weeks of information gathering. To get to the farm, officers had to trek more than three hours inland from the suspects home.

and others were caught crossing the red light while on their mobile phones. "This is simply dangerous and reckless and we can't afford to have these bad drivers on our roads." Mr Sokia warned that repeat offenders would have their licence suspended or cancelled, depending on the severity of the offence. "The severity of the offence will hinder and affect some provisional licence holders from acquiring their full licence." Provisional licence holders, Mr Sokia said, were usually under close watch not to breach or violate any road or drivingrelated regulation. "The authority reserves the power not to give a full licence to provisional licence holders if they don't maintain a clean driving record in the one-year period."

Scholarships For Civil Servants

GOOD news for civil servants as the Government of the People's Republic of China has offered scholarships to study for the International Master of Public Administration program. A statement released by the ministry said the scholarship entitlements would include tuition fees, allowances, accommodation, medical insurance, one time roundtrip air ticket and overseas travel insurance. PSC permanent secretary Parmesh Chand encouraged eligible civil servants to apply for the program. Mr Chand said this was one of the priority areas of training for public servants and as such Fiji was deeply appreciative of the offer of assistance by the People's Republic of China in this field. "Applicants must be a Fiji citizen working in government and he or she must have the endorsement of his/her permanent secretary," Mr Chand said. In addition, applicants must be under 45 years of age when taking up the award and have an undergraduate or postgraduate degree.

SUFFERING from a bone infection 8 in her leg, 11-year-old Seruwaia Vualiku lived the past two years in almost intolerable pain. But after receiving reconstructive surgery at the Shriners Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii, the young girl from Tavua would not have to bear the burden of walking with a limp nor suffer any discomfort for the rest of her life. Seruwaia returned on Monday with her mother Miliame Taukei after spending five months to correct the defect. Now she's looking forward to starting school again. Shriners Hospital representative Rob Leacock said the Tavua Primary School student was treated for an infection which was causing problems in her left leg. "In 2011, Seruwaia received a cut on her left leg that became infected and would not heal properly," he said. "She had three surgeries in Fiji but the leg still didn't heal properly. "I used to order about 50 bundles of long beans for Fridays and Saturdays but now I can only get 35 and if I am lucky, 40," he said. "But even with the low supply, I have to cut down the amount of vegetables in a pile and sell at the same price. "I need to make money myself." Another vendor Sushila Devi said the wet weather had affected her sales at the Labasa market.

FHL Tops 2013 Stock Trade

FIJIAN Holdings Limited was the most active stock in terms of the number of trades on the South Pacific Stock Exchange e-trading platform last year. SPSE chief executive officer Jinita Prasad said the restricted stock accounted for 67.25 per cent of the total number of trades last year. "This number of trades, which is more than five times higher than the second most active security, partly resulted in FHL having a market-based dividend reinvestment option for its shareholders," she said in the stock market report for 2013. "Looking at the most active security in terms of value trade, supermarket chain RB Patel Group Limited (RBG) took the lead followed by Fiji Television Limited and FHL. "FMF Foods Limited (FMF) was the liveliest in terms of value traded while

RBG and Amalgamated Telecom Holdings Limited (ATH) queued as second and third active stocks in terms of consideration accumulated." Ms Prasad said Future Forests (Fiji) Ltd Convertible Notes was the most inactive stock last year with a single trade recorded in the security. For market capitalisation, she said ATH was the market heavyweight encompassing 40.12 per cent of the entire market at the end of last year. She said the five largest companies represented 78.81 per cent of the market. "The top five securities in terms of market capitalisation at the end of 2013 were ATH with 40.12 per cent, Paradise Beverages (Fiji) Limited with 16.18 per cent, RBG with 9.53 per cent, FMF with 8.59 per cent and FHL with 4.39 per cent," Ms Prasad said.

End To Family's Struggle

For years, the Vunibola family had to struggle at the start of the new school year. This year though, is different because the family now only has to spend money on school books and uniforms. Mum Sera Vunibola said the government's free education grant was a major relief for her family, especially as she looked forward to sending her eldest daughter to continue her tertiary education. Mrs Vunibola along with her husband Timoci and two children Eci and Tomasi were doing their back to school shopping at the Post Shop in Suva. "Before we didn't get to spend Christmas properly because we were always thinking about our children's school fees," Mrs Vunibola said. "But this festive season has been great because we have money to spend with our families while we kept aside money for school accessories. "We can now buy all the items we never used to buy before because we don't have to pay for school fees." Another parent Taina Duganei said the start of the 2014 school year would be different for her family because the focus would be on books and uniforms alone. She said a heavy burden had been lifted off her now that she only had focus on books alone. Her elder daughter Sera Tawai will start Form Three in Levuka and younger daughter Doris Talei goes to Class Four. And she's expressed hope the free education grant continues because it has been of great help to parents.

Domestic violence rates in Fiji have spiked over the Christmas period with more than 100 cases reported in the past week. Fiji Women's Crisis Centre says it has received reports of 120 cases of violence against women in the past eight days. It comes less than a month after the centre released the results of a survey that showed 64 per cent of women in Fiji suffer from sexual and physical abuse. The Crisis Centre's coordinator, Shamima Ali, told Radio Australia's Pacific Beat her organisation is shocked by the grim statistics. "We often find it starts just before Christmas and then between Christmas and New Year's Day it really peaks," she said. "This is because there's a lot of alcohol consumption, there's a lot of conflicts about the financial constraints caused by this...the fact that people stay away from home and drink, go clubbing, and perhaps don't get back home, all this under the influence of alcohol. "There's a lot of family tensions, this is a time when families get together in the country...often the most vulnerable... are the women." Ms Ali says many incidents of violence against girls and women are not reported to authorities. "The national survey actually showed that only about 10 per cent of women ever report to either police (or) social welfare," she said. "Only five per cent ever get help from shelters and organisations like ours ...many of them go unreported, particularly given the inaccessibility of areas like the interiors of the two islands and the maritime islands where these services are not available." Ms Ali says the cases that are being

reported come from across the country. "Suva has got the highest because it covers a wider area, but we have also had high rates from Nadi and also Labasa...and Ba," she said. "If you look at this problem globally, it is such an entrenched problem. "To bring about any change you have to have a total change in mindset, attitudes and thinking, and cultural change. "You can have the best of laws, but if the people who are implementing those laws, if they don't get it then I'm sorry, we're not able to make a deeper stand in eliminating violence against women." Ms Ali says there are risks and benefits for women brave enough to speak publically of their experience of violence. "I believe that it does help the cause but what we need is that if women go public they need free counselling, they need to be prepared to face the repercussions which in some cases can be quite a lot," she said. Ms Ali says women who do tell their stories publically require ongoing counselling and that the Pacific's record of providing appropriate counselling is mixed. "There are counselling centers all around the Pacific," she said. "We work in about thirteen countries ...but sometimes the centers don't actually respond appropriately if they are not well trained. "If they haven't had the experience, then often they can do a lot more damage. "I would say in the Pacific there are ...some centers that are providing a very good service and there's a lot more work that needs to be done in providing ...appropriate services...for women and girls that are being violated in this manner."

THE Fiji Development Bank has teamed up with a money service provider to offer its customers and rural dwellers the option of sending and receiving money in a timely manner through any of its outlets. The opportunity followed the signing of a sub-agent agreement between FDB and Western Union in Suva. More than 400 cases of dengue fever have been reported in the country and Fijis Ministry of Health is urging the public to take the necessary measures to avoid being bitten. An elderly man is now on the wanted list after failing to turn up to court Tuesday. Jawahar Lal, 72, is charged with indecently annoying a person. He was to appear in the Suva Magistrates Court. But a bench warrant was issued for his arrest when he failed to show up. Mr Lal is alleged to have made racial slurs at a 65-year-old complainant who happened to be his neighbour.

responsibility. The breakdown of the prevailing dengue data suggests that the disease is not targeted, it is affecting all persons irrespective of ethnicity or creed, as such all individuals[are] to follow the ministrys advise to destroy mosquito breeding grounds and prevent oneself from being bitten by the denguetransmitting mosquito, Dr Kama said. The ministry has also activated environmental teams to carry out house to house calls to assist the public in reducing the number of dengue cases. Meanwhile, the ministry is urging municipalities around the country to assist in cleaning up areas such as blocked drains, rubbish heaps and other possible mosquito breeding grounds.

The court heard Mr Lal appeared when the case was initially called but then missed court on three dates. The court was told Mr Lal eventually came to court last month and was given Tuesday's date for his plea. However, when his name was called, he was not present. The police prosecution made an application for a bench warrant which was granted by the court. The case will be called later in the month.

FIJI's national airline has recorded improved results for its December 2013 on-time performance. In a statement, Fiji Airways managing director and chief executive officer Stefan Pichler said on-time performance for last month was 78 per cent compared with 77.5 per cent for November and 88.3 per cent in October. "A hydraulic leak and a bird strike affected two aircraft in late December, along with weather restrictions which caused delays on some consequent services," he said. "Most of the delay causes in December were due to mechanical issues out of our control, and our maintenance and engineering team worked hard over the holidays to keep those delays to a minimum.

National Airline Improves Performance

"While we of course try to minimize delays in the holiday season, our position on safety is never compromised. "I personally apologies to our customers affected by any disruptions to their travel plans in December. "Our focus on operational excellence will continue this new year." He said their subsidiary Pacific Sun reported an outstanding on-time performance of 93.5 per cent for December, compared with 88 per cent in November and 93.4 per cent in October. "The Pacific Sun team did an excellent job and had a great month operationally. "They are in for a big year, with the arrival of a brand new ATR 72 aircraft to their fleet and their brand change to 'FIJI LINK' by mid-year," Mr Pichler said.

Funding For Exporters

EXPORTERS and those engaged in small and medium enterprises in need of assistance can apply for this year's national export strategy funding following a call for expressions of interest from the Ministry of Industry and Trade. In a statement, the ministry said the national export strategy (NES) was an important initiative of the Bainimarama government that enabled exporters and potential exporters to achieve competiveness, value addition, export diversification and growth in targeted markets overseas. "Over the past seven years, NES has supported 34 projects amounting to $6.2million," it said. "This has led to significant increase in export sales and employment in majority of the companies that have been supported. In his 2014 National Budget announcement, the Prime Minister increased the support for NES from $1m to $1.5m. "This support is to continue assistance to our exporters, especially small and medium enterprises, to overcome impediments to trade and find new markets." It said this would enable the country to increase export and continue to improve Fiji's balance of payments and foreign reserves. It said exporters that required assistance to increase and facilitate their exports were encouraged to apply, adding applications must be submitted to the ministry by February 10. "The ministry will assist SMEs by providing advice on the criteria, application process and relevant documents that are required with the application."

New Vessel For Travellers

In a bid to meet the demand from sea travellers for efficient and reliable shipping services, a vessel surveying business has commenced shipping services to parts of the Northern Division. Billett Wright & Associates Limited director David Martin said they invested a considerable amount of money in their new general purpose vessel, Sea Rakino. He said operations started during the Christmas period after receiving the green light to commence shipping services from relevant authorities.

"Just as other shipping vessels are servicing certain areas, we are starting a shipping service for areas in the north of Fiji," he said. "There are other vessels that have broken down and are not servicing so we are trying to help those people who want to get back to their island, and those people who want to get from their islands back to Suva, in view of the fact that those other ships are not in operation. "We are running a service as and when the people want them and at this time, we are mostly servicing Gau."

$1000 Reward For Suka

Fiji Police Force is offering a $1,000 reward for any information that could lead to the arrest of Eliki Suka who is wanted in relation to a fire that killed his wife on December 23 last year. This comes after efforts to locate Suka including a house-to-house search have come up empty-handed. Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro also confirmed that they have yet to receive reliable information to locate the 65-year-old suspect. Eight people were in the Natavora Waters - Pub on the day of the fire and six of them escaped with minor burns. Resort manager Naomi Kolinisau and her 8-year-old daughter, Vicky, sustained serious burns and had to be admitted to the Lautoka Burns Unit. Naomi died on Christmas Day while Vicky who sustained 38 per cent burns to her lower body has been evacuated to New Zealand for treatment courtesy of ROMAC (Rotary Oceania Medical Aid for Children). Anyone with information is requested to contact the Director Criminal Investigations Department SSP Luke Rawalai on 9905 037 or 3315599. Police believe the fire may have stem from a domestic dispute.

Early Payout For Cane Farmers

Cane growers nationwide will receive a special payment of $5 per tonne to prepare their children for the 2014 school year. Sugar Ministry permanent secretary Lieutenant Colonel Manasa Vaniqi made the announcement at a press conference in Lautoka. "On behalf of the sugar industry stakeholders, we would just like to make mention that the Fiji Sugar Corporation, the Sugar Cane Growers Council and the Sugar Industry Tribunal have agreed that like last year we are going to advance $5 per tonne to the growers to prepare them for the school year in 2014," he said. "This is for the purchase of books and school uniforms for their children . "This agreement will not cover any deduction like in 2013." Lt-Col Vaniqi said in making the decision, the government was committed to assisting the farmers and the industry as a whole. Council CEO Sundresh Chetty said the announcement was good news for the growers. "A lot of growers have been inquiring about the payment, especially since school is about to start for the new term and this is very good news for the farmers as the industry has agreed to pay them a special cane payment of $5," he said. "We are now looking to finalise negotiations and dates will be announced soon it should be sometime next week," he said.

Fiji's Ministry of Health has declared a clean-up day next Thursday for residents in the central division as it ups the tempo against a dengue fever outbreak currently experienced in the country. On the day, residents in Lami, Suva, Nasinu and Nausori are required to identify and properly dispose things that may facilitate mosquito breeding. Health Ministrys media officer Evelyn Mani said damaged white goods such as

The ministry warns that any resident found guilty of breeding mosquitoes after January 16, 2014 will be liable for prosecution, Mani said. Between November last year and January 6, 2014, a total of 478 dengue fever cases were reported with the majority recorded in the central division.

A Naked Man Becomes Stuck In A Washing Machine After A Risky Game Of Hide And Seek
HE BECAME an internet sensation overnight after he was found naked, stuck in a top-loader washing machine. And now the biggest question of all has finally been answered - what on earth was he doing? Laurence, the man in question, said he wasn't hiding from his girlfriend, as previously reported, but he just "decided to have a bit of sneaky fun while in the nude". As one does. Ahem. What started as a seemingly harmless experiment and practical joke, ended with a collaborative rescue by police, firefighters, paramedics, Tatura SES and Shepparton Search and Rescue Squad. It was initially reported that the man from Mooroopna in country Victoria was aiming to surprise his girlfriend with his clever choice of hiding spot when he became firmly wedged. Emergency services were called, and after 20 minutes, freed the naked man by greasing him up with olive oil. LATEST IN LIFESTYLE Laurence claims he was about to have a shower and thought he'd pop into the laundry and try to hide in the toploader washing machine. Luckily he had the presence of mind to take his mobile phone with him. "I've been in stranger places if that's possible," he said. "I've always been a practical joker. I thought 'I can easily fit in there', but the way I sat in there with my legs crossed, it was impossible to get back out." Laurence said he was almost 6 foot tall, and a decent build. It's a wonder he fit in there in the first place. Realising he might be in a sticky situation, Laurence called his friend. A girl. Not his official girlfriend as initially reported, he assured us. After convincing her that he wasn't joking, he asked her to call his parents and ask them to bring an angle grinder to "chop it down the middle" or otherwise call emergency services. Luckily his friend chose the latter option. According to Laurence, when the rescue teams arrived most of them were shocked and "stood around in awe".

During the rescue, Laurence asked his friend to get him a cigarette, which he smoked naked, while sitting in the washing machine. What an image. The emergency rescue team tried using shower conditioners and olive

oil to lubricate the internal walls of the machine, to no avail. Finally Laurence suggested that they drag the machine out and tip it on its side. "As soon as we did that I sort of just fell out onto the floor," he said.

Despite being pummelled by storms, choked by fire haze and recently named among the world's most expensive cities, Brisbane is cooler than ever, according to leading Australian travel guide publisher Lonely Planet. The latest Australia edition of the guide book considered to be the world traveller's bible says Brisbane is "arguably Australia's hippest city", an "energetic river town on the way up, with an edgy arts scene, pumping nightlife and great coffee and restaurants". The assessment may come as a surprise to residents of Sydney and Melbourne, long assumed to be living cooler, more culturally enriched lives. However, according to the guide's authors, Charles Rawlings-Way and Meg Worby - neither of whom hails from Queensland - "booming Brisbane" may well be the country's most underrated city. "Subcultural undercurrents run deep here, too," the author says, "with cool bookshops, globally inspired restaurants, cafes, bars and band rooms aplenty." Citing the appeal of the Brisbane

Brisbane Named The Country's Hippest City By Lonely Planet Australia Travel Guide
River, the guide describes Brisbane as "a patchwork of urban villages, each with a distinct style and topography: bohemian, low-lying West End; hip, hilltop Paddington; exclusive, peninsular New Farm; prim, pointy Kangaroo Point." It recommends that visitors "move from village to village and experience this diverse, eccentric, happening capital". Brisbane student and skateboarder Jake Grindrod, although surprised, took the claim in his stride. "Really? I would have thought it was Melbourne for sure, but that's great," he said. "I always knew we were the hippest up here in BrisVegas." Lord Mayor Graham Quirk said he was delighted that the Lonely Planet shared his enthusiasm for Brisbane. He said the world would be exposed to the city's charms in November, as the leaders of the Group of 20 (G20) Nations converge on the convention centre at South Bank. "Brisbane is a New World City with an enviable sub-tropical climate, lively al-fresco dining scene, green spaces, world-class art galleries and premier events," Councillor Quirk said. "It's also time for Brisbane to shine with the G20 later this year which will further skyrocket Brisbane's reputation as it becomes the capital of the world for a week." While Brisbane may be hip, consumer advocates are quick to point out the downside of living in a city that according to latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics boasts the country's second-fastest growth rate behind Perth. The Expatistan website recently rated Brisbane the world's 13th most expensive city, ahead of Tokyo (19), Stockholm (15) and even Melbourne (18). Of Australian capitals, only Sydney came in ahead at number 11, according to the site's Cost of Living Index, which compares such expenses as monthly rent, movie tickets, transportation, grocery costs and gym membership. Meanwhile, the cost of keeping a moped moving has risen dramatically in Brisbane.

According to the RACQ, Brisbane motorists are paying "unjustified record unleaded petrol (ULP) prices" well above those paid in the other major capitals. A price record was broken on January 2, with the average cost of ULP hitting 165.5 cents per litre, passing the previous record of 165.4 cents per litre set on July 24, 2013, RACQ spokeswoman Lynda Schekoske says. She says Brisbane motorists paid an average of 154.7 cents per litre in December, well above the average paid in other mainland capital cities and part of a "pattern" of price rises since Queensland scrapped its fuel subsidy scheme in 2009. However, she says, it was an alarming "aberration" for retailers to have boosted their prices as much as they did over the Christmas and New Year period. "Fuel retailers took an opportunity to boost their margins with no justification," she said, perhaps as as means of clawing back profits over a traditionally slow period for fuel sales.

Gay Brisbane Man Ali Choudhry Parents Accuse Hawaii Dentist Of Given Temporary Halt On Leaving Daughter, 3, With Brain Deportation As Tribunal Hears Case Damage
A gay man living in Brisbane has won a temporary reprieve from being deported to Pakistan where he could be jailed for his sexuality. Ali Choudhry has been living in Brisbane for four years with his partner, Brisbane neuroscientist Dr Matthew Hynd, but was due to be deported after his application for a partnership visa was refused by Immigration Minister Scott Morrison. His supporters say he is at risk of being jailed for his sexuality in Pakistan, where he does not read the language and has few contacts because he grew up in the United States. Mr Choudhry and Dr Hynd were one of the first gay couples in Queensland to register their civil union on March 12, 2012. Despite this, Mr Choudhry says the Government has ruled it does "not consider that you are in a long-standing relationship". He has now lodged an appeal to the Migration Review Tribunal (MRT). Mr Choudhry says he met with authorities and he will be allowed to stay past January 8. "The official told us that until MRT makes their decision I'm OK to stay in the country," he said. "But he was adamant not to give us anything in writing even though we asked him several times." Mr Choudhry was born in Pakistan but grew up in New Jersey in the United States before going to university in Canada.

The parents of a 3-year-old in a "vegetative state" are suing a Kailua, Hawaii, dentist, alleging negligence and dangerous conduct that left the girl with massive, irreversible brain damage. The lawsuit filed against Lilly Geyer and her practice, Island Dentistry for Children, alleges improper medications with incorrect dosages were administered to Finley Boyle on December 3, 2013, according to court documents filed this week. "As a direct and proximate result of the medications administered to (Finley) by defendants, (Finley) suffered cardiac arrest during her dental procedure," the lawsuit said. It also alleges that as a further result of administering improper medications, Finley "suffered severe and permanent brain damage." Geyer and Geyer's attorney, John Nishimoto, did not respond to repeated requests by CNN for comment. The Island Dentistry website states it has been permanently closed and directs patients to an e-mail address. The lawsuit, filed Monday in Hawaii's

First Circuit Court, also alleges Geyer did not have a plan or procedures in place to respond to medical emergencies, such as the one Finley suffered. It seeks unspecified damages. Finley's mother, Ashley Boyle, said she first took her daughter to the dentist in November, when she was told her daughter needed six fillings and four root canals, she said. They returned to the dentist in December to undergo the root canals, Boyle said. The parents allege that Finley was sedated and left unmonitored for 26 minutes. Finley was moved from a hospital to a hospice in late December. "She will probably not be with us much longer," Boyle said. Finley's pediatric neurologist, Dr. Gregory Yen, said the girl has been in a "persistent vegetative state" since she was brought to him a month ago. Finley has undergone four MRIs on her brain, which have shown severe damage, the doctor said. It is difficult to say how long Finley will be alive, Yen said.

On his crowd-funding project on Pozible to raise funds for the MRT appeal, an emergency plan is listed. If Mr Choudhry is deported he will attempt to get a tourist visa so that he can stay with friends in either the US or Canada. However, the visa would only last three months. 120,000 people sign petition given to Scott Morrison A petition on his behalf with more than 120,000 signatures was delivered to the Immigration Minister's Sydney office. Ipswich man Paul Toner started the petition after hearing about Mr Choudhry's plight four days ago, and says the response has been overwhelming. "We had no idea this is the response we were going to get," he said. "But I think the moral clarity around this cause, the fact that it's just something so wrong, the fact that Australians believe that these two guys need a fair go - a good old Australian concept - has driven the success of this petition." Mr Toner says there is still time to convince Mr Morrison to reverse his decision. "People have responded in a massive way to this. They've given a lot of support to this cause," he said. "We've still got a day and a bit for the Australian Government to do the right thing. "We're hoping that we can have some sort of influence and we're hoping Ali will get at least a stay until he gets to appeal some of the decisions."

A former funeral director has been charged with 119 counts of fraud after allegedly making out his clients had died in order to submit their funeral bond claims to insurers. South Australian police allege the 45-year-old man arranged pre-paid funeral bonds, before making fake claims to insurers between 2008 and 2013 saying the policyholder had died. Funeral bonds allow people to set aside money to cover eventual funeral costs. Invested money can only be accessed

after the person's death. The man was arrested last Tuesday and charged with fraud following a complex investigation by Major Fraud detectives. The man has been granted bail and will appear in the Adelaide Magistrates Court in March. Police have advised those concerned about their pre-paid funeral bonds to contact their funeral director, insurer or the Funeral Director's Association. The Funeral Director's Association says the accused was not a member.

Girl Gets Trapped In Washing Machine

An 11-year-old US girl was left bruised and red-faced after becoming stuck inside a washing machine for 90 minutes during a game of hide-andseek last week. The Utah girl, who asked that her name be withheld, was playing with her cousins when she climbed into what she thought was the perfect hiding spot in the family's washing machine, located just below a dryer. "She really wanted to win," the girl's mother Nicole Rhoades, who was not home at the time, said. Ms Rhoades learnt about her daughter's predicament when she received a phone call from her eldest daughter. She said she could hear her 11-year-old

screaming in the background. "At that point they had already tried butter, peanut butter, ice and then at that point she was cold so they put some warm water on her," she said. After trying unsuccessfully to free the distressed girl, Ms Rhoades called 911. Emergency services arrived with an assortment of gas-powered tools, commonly used to free car crash victims from crushed wrecks. Instead, firefighters were able to remove the dryer above, allowing the girl to climb free. The girl was not hurt in the incident but learned a valuable lesson, Ms Rhoades said.

Polar vortex dropped over the United States and Canada on Monday, bringing life-threatening freezing temperatures to large parts of North America. Meteorologists predicted the lowest temperatures in two decades in some areas of the country, with the mercury at -37 degrees Celsius in the US city of Milwaukee. Icy roads and snow storms created travel chaos, with thousands of flights cancelled or delayed. The north-eastern US has endured heavy snow and deadly freezing conditions since the start of the year, and the extreme cold has claimed about a dozen lives nationwide. "The coldest weather in years will be making its presence known from the Upper Midwest to the Mid-Atlantic region for the beginning of the work week," the National Weather Service said. Wind chill warnings were in effect from Montana to as far south as Tennessee and Alabama, with temperatures feeling as cold as -45C, it said, describing the conditions as "life threatening". On the East Coast, a brief lull in the deep freeze greeted commuters on Monday, but temperatures were expected to drop overnight (local time). In Milwaukee, on the shores of Lake Michigan, officials warned residents to stay indoors and urged schools to shut down. "Police are reaching out to homeless citizens in order to help them find the nearest shelter," city spokeswoman Sarah DeRoo said. All schools were closed in Minnesota. In Cook County in Illinois, which includes Chicago, warming centres were opened for anyone suffering, including those whose home heating did not work. "This winter storm will be one for the record books, and we want to make sure everyone stays safe and warm until it passes," Illinois state governor Pat Quinn said. conditions, experts warn. More than 3,000 flights were cancelled on Monday, according to industry tracker FlightAware, including nearly 800 at Chicago O'Hare International, one of the country's busiest airports. Hundreds more flights were cancelled or delayed from other major hubs like New York's John F Kennedy or Newark International. A Delta passenger airplane skidded into a snow bank at JFK on Sunday. Nobody was hurt, but the plane had to be towed to its gate. In Wisconsin, Sunday's National Football League playoff showdown between the Green Bay Packers and the San Francisco 49ers at the open-air Lambeau Field was one of the coldest NFL games in history. The Packers helped the more than 70,000 football fans at the stadium battle the freeze by handing out free coffee, hot chocolate and hand warmers. Green Bay lost to San Francisco, 23-20. In Indianapolis, Mayor Greg Ballard urged residents to simply stay indoors. Freezing rain is forecast to hit the south and east, while the New England region and New York could see more snow. The southern city of Atlanta will likely experience record low temperatures, while in normally balmy Florida, the National Weather Service issued a hard freeze warning in the northern part of the state. The extreme cold disrupted flights and classes in Canada as well. In the Atlantic island province of Newfoundland, more than 30,000 people were without power. Nationwide, officials warned of "treacherous" travel conditions. Meteorologists said that a warming trend would mercifully begin at midweek. Deaths blamed on the frigid weather include a worker crushed by a 30-metre pile of salt being prepared to treat roads in the Philadelphia area on Friday, and a 71-year-old woman suffering from Alzheimer's disease who froze to death after getting lost in New York State, officials said.

Collapsed 180Kg Man Winched From Sydney Balcony

Emergency crews have been forced to use a winch to move a 180-kilogram man after he collapsed in his western Sydney unit. Paramedics say the man in his 30s could not be carried out of the unit building in the city's west at Merrylands. Inspector Kernin Lambert from Fire and Rescue NSW says they made the decision to lower the man from his first floor balcony. "Due to the nature of the patient's condition and medical emergency we weren't able to remove the patient internally through the unit block," he said. "Firefighters have set up specialised rescue equipment, using ropes to lower the patient down." Once the man had reached the ground floor eight firefighters and paramedics carried his stretcher to a waiting ambulance trolley. He was then taken to Westmead Hospital in a serious but stable condition. The rescue operation took several hours to complete.

An NDP MLA is asking that Surrey city councillor and MLA Marvin Hunt step down from civic politics, claiming that the veteran councillor is failing to do his job. Hunt, elected in the last provincial election as a Liberal for SurreyPanorama, told the media last year he would stay on as city councillor for the love of the job. He is not being paid for that position, but feels he can act as MLA and councillor at the same time. Bruce Ralston, the MLA for SurreyWhalley, is asking Hunt to give up his council seat. Ralston said the December murder of Julie Paskall happened both within Hunt's provincial riding and within his city, yet no leadership is being shown by the veteran councillor. "I haven't seen a single comment by him, either as an MLA or as a city councillor, in any news outlet," Ralston said. "He's not doing his job." Hunt said he's been very busy working with the mayor, council, city lawyers, parks representatives and police in making sure Newton is a safe place to live. "I don't think the measure of my job is whether I'm talking in the media on horrible tragedies that happened in our city," Hunt said. He said he's also looking into how to expedite moving the bus loop from its current location to a green space on King George Boulevard. "Tragedies like this that happen on city property is something that we don't go public on and speak about details," Hunt said, adding that Ralston, as a former councillor and a lawyer, knows that full well. Ralston said Hunt, being a representative at both levels of

Pricier U.S. Milk Looms If Farm Subsidies End

The days of cheap milk and cheese luring cross-border shoppers into Washington State may soon end if the U.S. government ends its longstanding practice of deeply subsidizing American farms. The U.S. Senate has so farm blocked the renewal of subsidies, although wrangling continues toward a deal that would continue them at a reduced level. B.C. Dairy Association CEO Dave Eto said American farm subsidies are so "astounding" the price of milk south of the border would more than double if they were eliminated altogether. Eto isn't expecting a complete end to subsidies, but thinks the debt-laden U.S. government will insist they be ratcheted down over time, pulling perhaps $4 billion out of the U.S. dairy industry over the next decade. "I definitely think the prices will go up," he said. Any drop in the Canadian dollar against the U.S. greenback would also make U.S. dairy products less attractive to cross-border shoppers, and rising international demand may also help push up U.S. milk prices. Eto said it's conceivable Bellingham residents could one day be heading north into B.C. to buy cheaper Canadian milk, although he estimated it would take a return to a 75-cent loonie and a complete end to U.S. subsidies. Eto used the issue to draw contrasts between the two countries' systems and combat consumer perceptions of being gouged by retailers at home. B.C.'s supply management system means more stable prices and longterm certainty for investment by the industry, he said, in contrast to the more volatile U.S. dairy industry, where overproduction can cause farm bankruptcies and wild price swings for consumers. Most U.S. residents don't enjoy the cheap prices B.C. residents get when they nip across the border to Blaine or Bellingham. Eto said aggressive pricing by retailers close to the border to pull in Canadian shoppers means U.S. milk is sold below cost in those areas. He said an October price survey showed average supermarket prices of a gallon of milk was $4.05 in San Francisco and $4.89 in Portland, but dropped to $2.79 in Seattle and $2.50 in Bellingham. Eto also noted Canadians pay only once for their unsubsidized milk the retail price while U.S. residents pay another hidden price through their taxes to fund farm subsidies. Eto isn't demanding B.C. residents buy Canadian, but he noted dollars spent at home support dairy farmers, processors, distributors and ultimately contribute to taxes that support health, education and other services in B.C. "For every dollar we spend in our communities, it has a five times rebound effect," he said. "We don't give that enough credence." Other observers doubt even more expensive U.S. milk will do much to dent the flow of shoppers heading south. "Milk is just a small sliver of the savings waiting down south," said Jordan Bateman of the Canadian Taxpayers Federation. "Cheaper gas, consumer goods and flights make it highly unlikely that this will curb cross-border shopping." Other free-market advocates say Ottawa should rip up the current supply management system in Canada and let milk prices float rather than be propped up. That would mean more price volatility but a better deal for consumers who now pay more than necessary, said Mark Milke, a senior fellow at the Fraser Institute. "Canadian dairy farmers are grasping at straws for any excuse to keep consumers captive to a governmentengineered and government-regulated cartel," Milke said. "The current system cuts into the income of the poorest Canadian consumers because you can't avoid buying milk." He said New Zealand's system is a much better model and has resulted in a huge export-oriented dairy industry that now accounts for 40 per cent of world trade in dairy products.

government, is in a unique position to affect change. Hunt agrees. "But the reality is, until we actually know what happened, who perpetrated it, why it was perpetrated, we're just dealing in speculation," Hunt said. That speculation will only promote fear, he said. "Which is not what we need in the community," he added. Hunt said he's concerned about the politicizing of such events. "One of the worst things that happens in these tragedies is politicians make it a political issue instead of the community tragedy it is," Hunt said. "I don't think the tragic death of a citizen of Surrey is something that we should be making political points on." Hunt has said he will continue both jobs as long as possible, and will step aside for the coming civic election in November.

H5N1 Bird Flu Death Confirmed In Alberta, 1st In North America

Officials say no risk of human-to-human transmission Alberta health officials have confirmed an isolated, fatal case of H5N1 or avian influenza, federal Health Minister Rona Ambrose said Wednesday. But officials repeatedly emphasized that there is no risk of transmission between humans. The infected person, an Alberta resident who recently travelled to Beijing, China, died Jan. 3. The case was confirmed in a lab test last night. It's the first such case in North America. The person first showed symptoms of the flu on a Dec. 27 flight from Beijing to Vancouver aboard Air Canada flight 030. The passenger continued on to Edmonton on Air Canada flight 244, after spending a few hours in the Vancouver airport, and was admitted to hospital Jan. 1. The symptoms of fever, malaise and headache worsened and the patient died two days later. The Public Health Agency of Canada was notified Jan. 5. There were no respiratory symptoms, said Dr. James Talbot, Alberta's chief medical officer of health. The diagnosis at the time of death was an inflammation of the brain and the linings that cover the brain. "That is one of the ways that H5N1 patients die," Talbot said. It is not known how the patient contracted the disease. The patient did not leave Beijing, did not travel to farms and did not visit any markets. "Virtually every case has a pretty strong link to a close contact with birds," Talbot said. Rare in humans Dr. Gregory Taylor, deputy chief public health officer, said the avian form of influenza has been found in birds, mainly poultry, in Asia, Europe, Africa and the Middle East. There have been fewer than than 650 human cases of bird flu in 15 countries over the last decade, primarily among people who have spent time around infected birds, he said. "The illness [H5N1] causes in humans is severe and kills about 60 per cent of those who are infected," Taylor said. "No other illnesses of this type have been identified in Canada since the traveller returned from China. This is an isolated case." The officials added that the patient was otherwise healthy and it's not yet clear how the person contracted H5N1. Speaking to Evan Solomon, host of CBC News Network's Power & Politics, Taylor said the patient was relatively young. "This was a relatively young well, a young person compared to me, with no underlying health conditions," he said. Taylor is 58. Risk of getting H5N1 low Officials emphasized that this is not a disease transmitted between humans. There were two people travelling with the infected person, whom officials are following for 10 days to ensure they don't have any symptoms. They are also going to notify the other passengers from the flights between Beijing and Edmonton, and are following a group of the patient's "close contacts." Officials created confusion by referring to the patient as "him" and "her" in order to avoid identifying anyone. Officials said that they would not identify the sex, age or occupation of the patient. They also refused to say whether the infected passenger was an Edmonton resident or whether the patient went to hospital in Edmonton, although the final leg of the flight ended there. Talbot said reports that the patient was from Edmonton are erroneous. Ambrose, who phoned into a news conference in Ottawa, said Canadian officials are working with Chinese authorities on the case, as well as the World Health Organization. "The risk of getting H5N1 is very low. This is not the regular seasonal flu. This is an isolated case," she said. An Air Canada spokeswoman said in a statement the airline is co-operating with officials, but referred any questions on the matter to the Public Health Agency of Canada.

Surrey residents say Pattullo Bridge traffic increased since Port Mann tolls doubled on January 1

New Port Mann Bridge Toll Puts Pressure On Pattullo Traffic

A Surrey resident says the amount of traffic in her neighbourhood has been a "nightmare" since new tolls were introduced on the Port Mann Bridge last week. Cars, pickup trucks and small vans had been paying a rate of $1.50 for each crossing of the Port Mann Bridge since tolls were introduced in 2012, but on Jan. 1 rates doubled to $3. Ruth Reiter has lived in Surrey's Bridgeview neighbourhood for eight years and says she has never seen so much traffic. "To take a trip up to Price Mart Foods, on a normal day, would take me 15 minutes. Tuesday it took me an hour," said Reiter. Reiter blames the increased congestion on drivers who are taking the toll-free Pattullo Bridge instead of paying to cross the Port Mann. "Right now people just don't have a choice. This bridge is free. The Port Mann is not free," said Reiter. New Westminster city councillor Jonathan Cote says he has noticed a difference too. "We don't have any official statistics in yet, but just looking at the road network it does look like there's been impact and congestion has gotten worse since the tolls have increased on the Port Mann," said Cote.

But Surrey transportation manager Jamie Boan says there is no evidence that the number of people using the Pattullo Bridge has changed. "We've actually got cameras and a count station at the approach to the bridge and we have been monitoring that. We actually haven't seen any increase in the volume going across the Pattullo," said Boan. TransLink also monitors the flow of traffic over its bridges, but was unable to obtain a reading this week because of technical problems. Meanwhile, negotiations over what to do about the 75-year-old Pattullo Bridge have stalled. Last June, TransLink presented six options to New Westminster and Surrey for replacing the aging bridge. Those options have been whittled down to two either a new four -lane or a new six-lane crossing. But Cote says this will be a disaster for the city. "Adding extra capacity just simply isn't going to work for the City of New Westminster, because all we are going to be doing is moving congestion further into the city and making an already difficult situation even worse." The fate of the Pattullo Bridge and whether or not it will be tolled will be decided later this year.

Fraser Health Encourages The Public To Get Their Flu Shot

Fraser Healths Chief Medical Health Officer, Dr. Paul Van Buynder, is advising anyone who has not already had their flu shot to do so in light of increased influenza cases across the health region. Over the last two weeks Fraser Health has seen several severe cases of the H1N1 strain which mirrors the pattern seen in Alberta, Ontario and Texas recently. There are currently over a dozen ventilated patients with the H1N1 disease in intensive care units across the health region. These patients are not the very elderly but are adults across the age spectrum, some in their early Thirties. There are also patients who are pregnant, and others who suffer from chronic illnesses. We are seeing small pockets of very severe disease, says Dr. Van Buynder. The care available to patients through the support of our intensive care staff is exceptional and I am expecting all those presently on ventilators to eventually recover. If you received the 2013 influenza vaccine, you are immunized against the H1N1 strain currently circulating in our community. We are urging those who have not already had their flu shot to get one. It is not too late. Beginning Dec. 2, 2013, the provincial Influenza Control Policy came into effect. In addition to health care workers, anyone visiting someone in a health-care facility will be expected to have been vaccinated or wear a mask to help protect those most vulnerable this influenza season. Flu shots are offered free of charge in B.C. to a number of individuals, including children, seniors, pregnant women, Aboriginal people, individuals with chronic health conditions, and those who work or come in close contact with higher-risk groups. The influenza vaccine is safe and effective at preventing illness when used in conjunction with other infection control practices, such as hand washing and remaining at home when sick.

The Secret To Booking A Cruise At A Deep Discount

Everybody loves cruising its easily one of the most popular ways to vacation. And why not? With modern ships, exceptional amenities, great food and exotic ports of call, todays cruise ships are floating resorts, with something for everyone. But do you know whats even better than taking a cruise? Its getting that cruise at a big discount sometimes as large as 82%. These kinds of discounts are readily available to knowledgeable travelers who know how to find them. In this article, well give you the knowledge you need to do the same. Why such a big discount? The first (and key) thing to understand is this: The ship is going to sail, full or not. The second thing is, to a cruise line, sailing with empty cabins is extremely unprofitable. So at a certain point (usually within a few months of the departure date), the cruise line would much rather sell any empty cabins at a discount than have gets a cruise at a much lower rate everybody wins. What do you need to do? There are a couple things you should be aware of in pursuing the best cruise prices: Be a little flexible on the departure date and itinerary. Cruising at any time offers terrific value, but there are benefits to being able to travel on fairly short notice or to shifting your departure date or itinerary to take advantage of a great offer. Register with a company that is authorized to offer deals on these unsold cabins (signing up is completely free of charge, by the way). Vacations To Go, the worlds largest seller of cruises (in business since 1984) is one of the more popular websites handling these kinds of bookings. But thats about it if you are willing to spend a little time searching and are flexible on travel dates, you can get a terrific cruise for pennies on the dollar. Bon voyage!

them remain empty (their attitude is something is better than nothing). But, selling cabins at cheaper prices poses an issue for them since passengers have already booked at full fare, the cruise line really doesnt want to offer the remaining rooms at a cheaper price on their own website.

So these cruise lines work with third-party companies/websites that specialize in offering cruises at a discount. This way, the cruise line itself doesnt seem like its selling the room at a discount, yet they can fill up the ship like they want to. Plus, the vacationer who sought out the bargain

How a thief can use a pen to break into your luggage, even if its locked Yes, youve got a TSA approved lock on your bag because youre a savvy traveler. So how can you avoid luggage theft? Common sense Keep an eye on your luggage at all times. It only takes a few seconds for a busy traveler to get distracted, which becomes a moment of opportunity for any thief to simply walk away with a nice bundle of valuables that packed and ready on a set of wheels. If youre travelling with a partner, make sure one person is watching the luggage at all times. If youre travelling solo, take your bags with you wherever you go, even to the washroom (most washroom stalls are big enough to accommodate a carry-on suitcase). Keep a sharp watch as you go through security As your carry-on luggage disappears into the scanner; keep an eye on the conveyor belt on the other side as your stuff comes back out. Also keep a watch on the person in line in front of you. If you get distracted, someone can easily walk away with your laptop or jewellery as they pick up their own things ahead of you. Extra protection Keep putting that TSA lock on your bags, but as added protection, secure your bags with plastic strips or cable ties. TSA can easily cut through them if they need to, but the added layer a thief has to get through to access your valuables will become a deterrent. Shrink-wrapping your bags is another option. Not only does it deter thieves, it also protects your luggage from getting damaged while being handled at the airport. Use a hard shell suitcase A clam-shell" style suitcase that has a latch closure is a better option because there is no zipper that can be broken into. The hard casing also cant be slashed open by a blade and thus provides added security. Dont blend in with the crowd Pick a vibrant colour or pattern that is easily recognizable from a distance. In case someone walks away with your bag, youll be able to spot it from a distance. Pack smart Avoid taking valuables with you while travelling. Pack items that are easily replaceable. If you dont need it, dont bring it. If you are going to carry an item of value, put it in your carry-on bag and keep it with you at your seat while youre on the plane. Hide it Wrap a camera inside a sweater or put jewellery in a shaving kit when you put it in your suitcase. If someone were to quickly rummage through your bag, theyll likely miss these hidden items. Keep an inventory If items from your luggage happen to go missing while being handled by airport staff, an item inventory will help you report the theft right away. Get baggage insurance It may seem like an added expense, but if you want to travel with the peace of mind, an extra few dollars will be well worth the investment.

Is Your Luggage Secure? Apparently Not

Whether youre flying south for a vacation in the sun or you're off to visit your family, you'll want to arrive safely. Here are some tips for arriving at your destination without mishap. -If you have diabetes or take medication using a syringe, get a signed letter from your doctor explaining that your syringes are a medical necessity. -Know the generic names of your medications so you can replace them if they are lost or stolen. Your medication will have a different brand name in another country. -If you have any life-threatening allergies, wear a medical alert bracelet and bring an Epi-pen kit. -Pack presents in carry-on luggage so they can be more easily checked by security. -Travel light. Take only what you need and no more. -Get the address of the local Government of Canada office for the country you plan to visit. These offices can assist you in case of emergencies. -Use covered luggage tags with your office address instead of your home address. -Make sure your children know their home address and telephone number. Show them where to go in the airport if you get separated, and review the procedure for dealing with strangers. -Give a family member or friend your travel itinerary and the contact information for your hotel. Make sure someone has your email address and the phone number of the local Canadian embassy as well. -If you are a single parent travelling with your children, make sure you have a signed letter of permission from the other parent. You could be barred from the plane if you are unable to prove you have the right to take your children with you. -Leave the bling at home and reduce your risk of getting robbed. The same goes for expensive electronics such as iPods and digital cameras. Buy some

Tips For Safe Holiday Travel

disposable cameras to use. -Do you really need your cellphone on vacation? Chances are you wont get service. Opt for email to stay in touch with people back home. It will be much more economical. -Make photocopies of your passports, credit cards and other ID. Leave one copy with a relative at home, and keep another copy separate from your originals. -Travel with only one credit card. Bring a combination of travellers cheques and cash in small bills (American money is universally accepted). You should be able to use your debit card as long as the machine has the CIRRUS symbol. You will be charged for each transaction. Try to familiarize yourself with the local currency so your first transaction wont be so confusing. -Bring an extra pair of glasses or contact lenses as backup. You dont want your vacation ruined because you cant see anything. -Get adequate medical insurance, particularly if you are planning to do any high-risk adventure travel. Check your policy to make sure your medical expenses abroad will be covered as well as emergency evacuations. -Go easy on the sunbathing. It can be tempting to spend all day in the sun, but you dont want your vacation ruined by a bad sunburn or sunstroke. -Motorcycles and scooters may seem like a fun way to travel, but leave them to the locals who are familiar with the streets and traffic rules. -Rent a car from a reputable company and check the small print on all contracts. Your hotel will probably have a car rental service. -Check with Be Aware and Declare, hosted by the Canadian government, to find out what you can and cant bring back with you. You don't want to be slapped with any heavy fines on your way through customs

Discipline Mistakes Parents Make

Way to Blow It #3: Dis Dad (or Vice Versa) When Polly and her husband, Jim, take their two kids, Zoe, 5, and Miles, 2, out for a treat, this Milwaukie, OR, couple tells them that they have to behave or they won't get it. "Unfortunately, my husband is a complete pushover and always gives them the treat even if they act up," says Polly. A Better Way: Even though Jim doesn't mean to undermine Polly's efforts, that's exactly what he's doing. Showing a united front won't just help your child behave better, it'll also prevent you from feeling like the bad guy all the time. "If you and your husband prefer to use different punishments, that's okay -just as long as there are consequences for the same actions. When your child is out of earshot, create a list of rules and discuss different options, she says. Way to Blow It #4: Bribe a Little Too Often "My two-year-old daughter, Isabelle, has never been a great eater," says Liz. So I once offered her a piece of chocolate if she would just finish her lunch." The reward worked perfectly: Isabelle ate her chicken and sweetpotato fries -- but then she demanded another treat at dinner time. "Now, whenever I want her to eat, she asks for either chocolate or a lollipop," complains the mom. "Plus, she'll eat just one fry and then expect her treat." A Better Way: We all need to keep a good bribe up our sleeves -- to get through the grocery store, a church service, or that new episode of Mad Men you had to TiVo because you were too whipped to stay up for it. But the experts insist that reinforcing good behavior is a better way to go. "So instead of saying 'If you're good at Grandma's today, I'll

buy you a toy,' try 'I'm really proud of you for sitting so nicely during dinner at Grandma's,'" advises Maslin. And don't underestimate the power of disappointment. "Saying 'I'm really sad you broke the present Daddy gave me' makes a child feel appropriately bad about his behavior," says Maslin. "You may feel like a terrible parent in the moment, but you're actually helping your child develop a conscience." Way to Blow It #5: Break Your Own Rules When Anne's 2-year-old son, Brandon, would do things he shouldn't -- take his mom's car keys or pull books off the shelf, for example -- this mom would slap his hand and say "No, sir!" in a harsh tone of voice. "It worked great," she says, "until his preschool teacher caught him slapping the hands of any child who took his toy or cut in front of him in line!" Anne quickly realized that she couldn't say it was wrong for Brandon to smack his friends' hands when she and her husband, Brian, were doing the same thing to him. "We switched to time-outs," says Anne. A Better Way: Not only are kids little mimics, emulating your bad behaviors, but they'll call you on it, as Suzi found out. Her 2-year-old, Will, knows that throwing toys in the house is a definite no-no. "But one day my husband, Chris, threw a dog toy into the next room, just to get it out from underfoot," says Suzi. "Will immediately ordered him into a time-out! Since then, we try to be more careful and follow our own rules," she says. "But on the plus side, at least it showed us that the 'no throwing toys' rule is starting to sink in!" Continued Next Week

The myths about preventing and treating a urinary tract infection (UTI) are many, but lets get to the truth. About 60 percent of women will experience this common malady (and the painful, frequent and sometimes urgent urination that goes with it) over their lifetimes. At the top of the UTI myth list is the widely held belief that drinking cranberry juice or taking cranberry supplements can prevent and treat UTIs. There is an active ingredient in cranberries that can prevent adherence of bacteria to the bladder wall, particularly E. coli, says urologist Courtenay Moore, MD. But most of the studies have shown that juice and supplements dont have enough of this active ingredient, A-type proanthocyanidins (PACs), to prevent bacteria from sticking to the urinary tract. Overall, clinical studies on the efficacy of cranberry juices and extracts for the prevention of UTIs are conflicting. In 2012, the Cochrane Data Base identified 24 studies comparing cranberry products (juice or extracts) to control or alternative treatments. The review found that compared with placebo, cranberry products did not significantly reduce the occurrence of UTIs. The effectiveness of cranberry was not significantly different to antibiotics for women. Also, because supplements are not regulated by the FDA, it is not known how much of the active ingredient each product contains. Therefore, many of the products may not have enough of the active ingredient to be effective in preventing bacterial adherence to the bladder wall. How you can help prevent UTIs Dr. Moore says shes heard all of the myths about how to prevent or treat UTIs drinking lots of water, urinating after sex, avoiding tightfitting pants and staying away from hot tubs, bubble baths and tampons. None of these beliefs is supported by any scientific data, she says. On the other hand, here are three things that Dr. Moore says women should do to help prevent UTIs: Take precautions to prevent UTIs after sexual activity. Frequency of sexual activity is strongly correlated with UTIs, she says, and multiple partners and a history of sexually transmitted diseases put you at the greatest risk. If youre prone to recurrent UTIs, Dr. Moore advises against using spermicides or barrier contraceptives (like a diaphragm) and will often recommend a single dose of an oral antibiotic be taken before or

after sex. Develop good bowel habits. Urinary tract infections are caused when bacteria from the rectum strays into the vagina, she says. That most commonly happens when you have constipation or diarrhea, so do what you can to stay regular. Balance good bacteria with bad. For women with recurrent UTIs, Dr. Moore often uses oral or vaginal probiotics, also known as good bacteria. You want more healthy bacteria so less bad bacteria can adhere to the vagina, she says. Rushing to the grocery store for yogurt isnt enough, though. Not all yogurt brands have probiotics in them, and youd have to eat about seven a day to get what you need, she says. Frequent Urination: Full Bladder Killing Your Sleep? How to get your bladder to rest, so you can too For many of us, it first happens with a pregnancy. You cant seem to get through the night without visiting the bathroom at various, inconvenient hours. And as we get older, we may again feel like slaves to our needy bladders. The good news is that if your bladder is waking you up at night at various times to pee, or what scientists call nocturia, there are small but effective changes you can make for better sleep. Its also important to talk to your doctor because frequent urination can be more than just a nuisance it can also be a sign of an underlying medical condition. Tips to dealing with night-time urination Here are some suggestions to help you get your beauty rest: Keep a voiding diary. Monitor your drinking and your urine output. Take note of whether you are urinating too much around the clock, or just at night. If youre urinating more than eight times in 24 hours, thats too much if youre under age 60. And if youre going more than twice a night, you should make an appointment with your doctor. Limit your intake of fluids two hours before bedtime. Drinking too close to bedtime can cause the need to urinate at night. And alcohol and caffeine bladder stimulants should be limited all day long. Cut back to just one alcoholic beverage, or none at all, and decrease your current caffeine intake. Check for sleep apnea. During deep sleep, our bodies produce antidiuretic hormone (ADH). This allows us to retain more fluid overnight. People with sleep apnea do not get into the deep stages of sleep, so their bodies dont make enough of this hormone. In addition, the drops in oxygen levels during apnea episodes trigger the kidneys to excrete more water. In this case, treating sleep apnea should take care of the problem. Exercise and wear support hose for swelling in your feet or legs. If you experience swelling in your feet or legs, youll probably wake more often to urinate overnight. Thats because the fluid pooling in your extremities during the day will be reabsorbed into your system once you lie down with your feet at the level of your heart. Then, the fluid heads to your kidneys to be processed. To help with this issue,

exercise and wear support hose to try to get that fluid processed before bedtime. Some of it is part of aging Its true that as we age, our bodies make less of a hormone that allows us to retain fluids, so our bladders fill more rapidly. Our bladders are also able to hold less urine as we get older. Between these two factors, women beyond age 60 should expect to wake to use the bathroom at least once each night. But even so, these tips can help minimize the nightly washroom excursions for women of any age. What The Color of Your Urine Says About You (Infographic) Color, density, and smell can reveal health problems Human urine has been a useful tool of diagnosis since the earliest days of medicine. The color, density, and smell of urine can reveal much about the state of our health. Here, for starters, are some of the things you can tell from the hue of your liquid excreta.

Researchers have said that the lip smacking, bubble popping, discarded gum, could be giving migraine headaches to teenagers. Now, Dr. Nathan Watemberg of Tel Aviv University-affiliated Meir Medical Center has found that gumchewing teenagers, and younger children as well, are giving themselves headaches too. Dr. Watemberg said that out of their 30 patients, 26 reported significant improvement, and 19 had complete headache resolution, explaining that twenty of the improved patients later agreed to go back to chewing gum, and all of them reported an immediate relapse of symptoms. At Meir Medical Center's Child Neurology Unit and Child Development Center and community clinics, Dr. Watemberg noticed that many patients who reported headaches were daily gum chewers. Teenage girl patients were particularly avid chewers a finding supported by previous dental studies. Dr. Watemberg found that in many cases, when patients stopped chewing gum at his suggestion, they got substantially better.

Chewing Gum Could Be Culprit Behind Teens' Migraine Headaches

For the study, Dr. Watemberg asked 30 patients between six and 19 years old who had chronic migraine or tension headaches and chewed gum daily to quit chewing gum for one month. They had chewed gum for at least an hour up to more than six hours per day. After a month without gum, 19 of the 30 patients reported that their headaches went away entirely and seven reported a decrease in the frequency and intensity of headaches. To test the results, 26 of them agreed to resume gum chewing for two weeks. All of them reported a return of their symptoms within days.

Experts have jotted down five golden rules for a healthy lifestyle which according to them are a key to staying healthy and fit during old age. The experts have revealed that not overeating, avoiding being overweight, eating a healthy diet, getting regular exercise and taking some "tried and tested pills" are the five golden rules to remaining healthy, the Daily Express reported. According to the scientists, from

Golden Rules For Staying Fit And Healthy In Old Age Revealed

Linkoping University in Sweden, lifestyle factors are vital for maintaining cognitive, psychological and physical health as we grow older. One of the study leaders, professor Mats Hammar, cautioned people against leaving the dinner table "stuffed to the gills", while claiming that undereating slightly in the form of limited calorie intake is probably beneficial in the long run.

Pomegranate - rubies in a shell or rubies for your health, there are several ways to describe this delectable fruit because of its health benefits. And a definite plus point to pomegranate's many health benefits is the fact that it is available all year round. However, many underestimate it, making the humble pomegranate an underdog in the healthy fruits department. Today we pay tribute to this wonder fruit by bringing you the health benefits of pomegranates in this post. 1: Free radicals We may not be aware but pomegranates are a rich source of antioxidants. Therefore, it helps to protect your body's cells from free radicals, which cause premature aging. Free radicals are formed due to exposure to the sun and harmful toxins from the environment. 2: Natural blood thinners There are two kinds of blood clots: The first kind speeds skin recovery from topical injuries like cuts and bruises. Here it is important that the blood clots immediately to avoid lose of blood. The second kind of blood clot is internal and dangerous; examples would include blood clots in the heart and arteries, also urinary retention. Here you don't want the blood to clot as the effects are lethal. To smoothen out the blood you need pomegranate seeds, as the antioxidant properties help it act like a 'thinner for paints'. The seeds prevent your blood platelets from coagulating and forming clots. 3: Prevention of atherosclerosis With age, and bad lifestyle habits, the artery walls harden with cholesterol and other substances, causing blockages. The antioxidant properties of a pomegranate prevent low-density lipoprotein or bad cholesterol from oxidizing. This essentially means that pomegranates prevent the hardening of the artery walls with excess fat, leaving your arteries fat free and pumping with antioxidants. 4: Pomegranates act like an oxygen mask In simple words, pomegranate juice pumps the level of oxygen in your blood. The antioxidants reduce cholesterol, fight free radicals and prevents blood clots. This eventually helps the blood to flow freely in your body in turn improving the oxygen levels in your blood. 5: Arthritis prevention Pomegranate health benefits run bone deep; it can reduce the damage on the cartilage for those hit with arthritis. This fruit has the ability to lessen the inflammation and fights the enzymes that destroy the cartilage. 6: Fight erectile dysfunction This could well be on Ripley's Believe it or Not! Pomegranate can also cure this embarrassing problem. But mind you, it is not a wonder drug; pomegranate juice can improve erectile dysfunction only moderately. Research is inconclusive, but this theory has found some supporters. 7: Fights prostrate cancer and heart diseases Again, this is inconclusive and not binding, but two separate studies claim that pomegranate juice helps fight prostrate cancer. In one lab experiment, the juices "slowed the growth of the cultured cancer cells and promoted cell death". In the second experiment, pomegranate juice improved the condition of the blood, hence improving the health of individuals down with cardiovascular diseases. A word of caution: Pomegranate juice may react to a heart patient's medication. Other healing effects of pomegranate juice: - Reduces diarrhea - Controls weight - Prevents cartilage deterioration - Lowers blood pressure - Slows down Alzheimer's disease

If you cannot find a doctor If a family doctor is not available, or you cannot wait for an appointment, you can visit a walk-in clinic. Some clinics are open evenings and weekends when other doctors offices are closed. Clinics offer many health services without an appointment or if you are having a small emergency that is not life threatening. Find clinics by looking under Clinics or Clinics-Medical in the yellow pages of your telephone book. Using hospital services If your community does not have a walk-in clinic, and you are having a minor emergency, you might be able to visit the hospital as an outpatient. The outpatient service is similar to a clinic. It is not the same as a hospital emergency room. For more information about health care in Canada and how to locate doctors or clinics in your area, visit the Health Care System website. Health emergencies Getting help in an emergency Canadian communities have trained medical and rescue workers to help you in case of a fire, an accident or a medical emergency such as a heart attack. Did Salman Khan Refuse To Be A Part Of Sohail Khans Next?

This Friday It'll Be Madhuri All The Way

After a gap of seven years, Bollywood diva Madhuri Dixit is back to woo moviegoers with "Dedh Ishqiya". Coming out Friday, the film, not a regular masala film, has loads of entertaining elements, including the actress' never-seen-before avatar. The weekend also has another love story, "Yaariyan", hitting the screens. Even though the film is a sequel to 2010 "Ishqiya", it is apparently different in its treatment and subject. Although director Abhishek Chaubey dropped Vidya Balan, seen in the original, he has retained Arshad Warsi and Naseeruddin for the part two. Huma Qureshi joins them in the cast. Naseeruddin and Arshad will reprise their roles of Khalujaan and Babban respectively from the original. Made on a budget of approximately Rs.15 crore, the women-centric hinterland drama has been jointly produced by Raman Maroo of Shemaroo Entertainment and Vishal Bharadwaj, who has also co-scripted the film. For those looking for teenage, candyfloss romance, debutante director Divya Khosla's "Yaariyan" may satiate their appetite. "Yaariyan" features Miss India 2011 Rakul Preet Singh, TV show "Humse Hai Life" actor Himansh Kohli, Miss Earth 2010 Nicole Faria and Serah Singh. Produced by T-Series, the music for the film has been composed by Pritam, Mithoon, Yo Yo Honey Singh, Arko Pravo Mukherjee and Anupam Amod. Khosla, who is married to producer Bhushan Kumar, has also choreographed five songs for the college-based romantic drama. The songs are "Baarish", "Meri maa", "Love me thoda aur", "Allah waariyan" and "Zor lagake haishaa". The film fraternity has supported "Yaariyan" in different forms. For instance, "Yaariyan" title was registered with Saif Ali Khan's company but he gave it to Kumar for free. Another well-known filmmaker, Mahesh Bhatt, launched the trailer of the film. The film was earlier expected to release Jan 31, but Kumar decided to advanced this after an encouraging response to the film's first song "ABCD", which got one million views on video-sharing website YouTube within just two days of its release. While "Dedh Ishqiya" is known for its star cast, "Yaariyan" has been in the news for its music. "Both the films are equal. 'Dedh Ishqiya' has Madhuri, but the music of 'Yaariyan' has been appreciated. Both the films will manage well," Rajesh Thadani of Multimedia Combines said. Even "Yaariyan" is a Rs.15 crore film. While both the films have had minimal promotions, each will hit approximately 1,200-1,500 screens.

Hit And Run Case: Salman's Trial John Abraham And Priya Tie The Knot Deferred To Jan 21
Actor-producer John Abraham has tied the knot with his girlfriend Priya Runchal in a private ceremony. The 41-year-old Dhoom star confirmed the news with a tweet, "Wishing you and your loved ones a blessed 2014! May this year bring you love, good fortune and joy. Love, John and Priya Abraham." John, who was holidaying in the US with Priya, is said to have tied the knot there with only family and close friends in attendance. John met Priya, an investment banker,

in Mumbai in December 2010. He was previously in a nine-year relationship with actress Bipasha Basu. The actor has always been secretive about his status with Priya and has rarely spoken about her in the media. Actress-singer Sophie Choudhary took to Twitter to wish the newlyweds. "Congrats John Abraham... Wish you and Priya all the happiness in the world!! God bless... Lots of love." Balaji CEO, Tanuj Garg, also wished John and Priya. "Congratulations John Abraham! All my best."

A Mumbai court Tuesday postponed till Jan 21 the hearing in the 2002 accident case involving Bollywood actor Salman Khan after the prosecution sought time to appeal against the retrial order in the Bombay High Court. Public prosecutor J.V. Kendralkar informed Sessions Court Judge D.W. Deshpande that the prosecution was awaiting the state government's response in the matter and accordingly sought time. Salman Khan's lawyer Shrikant Shivade opposed the prosecution plea and urged the fresh trial to commence immediately. He also pleaded to the court to grant a short date to the prosecution for adjourning the case. Judge Deshpande posted the matter for Jan 21 and directed the prosecution to get instructions from the government on the issue of appeal before the high court. On Dec 5, the sessions court had

ordered commencement of a fresh trial in the case. The grounds for the fresh trial was that Salman Khan was not given opportunity to examine witnesses in the context of the enhanced charges of culpable homicide under Indian Penal Code Section 304(2) slapped on him midway during the trial. Earlier, the actor was tried by a magistrate court for the lesser offence of causing death by negligence which attracts jail of up to two years. After examining 17 witesses, the magistrate court held that the higher charge of culpable homicide was made out against Salman Khan and referred it to the sessions court. The high-profile case dates back to Sep 28, 2002 when a SUV Toyota Land Cruiser allegedly driven by Salman Khan ran over some pavement dwellers in Bandra west, killing one and injuring four.

"I Wasn't Forced To Vacate My House" - Prabhu Dheva

Get Spooked! Spine-Chilling Trailer Of 'Darr At The Mall' Is Out

Belying reports that after his departure from the rented flat owned by Boney Kapoor, friends have found a home for him in Mumbai, Prabhu Dheva shifted into a suburban hotel on his return to the city. Says Prabhu, "I am staying in a hotel for the next week or so. By then I hope to find another home. Even if I don't I am okay. I've no assets to store except my clothes." Prabhu Dheva who was holidaying with his parents and sons in Mysore is

much amused by reports in the media about his "homelessness". "It has become a national issue, as if I was forced to vacate my home and now I've nowhere to go. That isn't true at all. I very happily moved out. And I was not traveling last week because I am homeless. Please! I was on a vacation with my parents and children. Everyone in Mumbai goes on a holiday during New Years Eve. Why can't I?" Prabhu Dheva returned to Mumbai last Saturday and immediately resumed shooting for Action Jackson. He booked into a hotel until he finds his own place. "I don't need much space except when my children visit me. I don't eat at home. In fact I am not much into food at all. I've lost even more weight now. Since I started working the minute I landed in Mumbai it is more convenient for me to work from a hotel for the time being." Prabhu admits his friends in Mumbai are searching for a place for him. "There are 5-6 options. I may choose to move into one of these apartments that my friends have found for me. But nothing has been decided as yet. Right now I'd rather stay in a hotel." Then the self-effacing self-declared gypsy quips, "I am shooting on a road with Ajay. I just hope people don't say, 'Prabhu Dheva sadak pe aa gaya.'"

Shahrukh Khan To Host 20th Screen Awards 2014

The dancer-choreographer-actor-directors last film RRajkumar did average business at the box office and this has Ajay Devgan worried after all, he is playing the lead in Prabhus next film, Action Jackson debacle and we thinks thats one reasonactually the only reason why he is keeping a close watch on his new project. Talking to a leading daily a buddy of the star said, Everyone in the industry is aware that Ajay has an intuitive understanding of how scripts work. Yes, he has involved himself in the minute details of Action Jackson. At his level its justified, especially since he doesnt want to repeat the Himmatwala mistake. The Satyagraha actor may know all about filmmaking and scripts, but he is no director remember U Me Aur Hum? And though RRajkumar may not have been a blockbuster, it certainly revived Shahids sagging career, no? The same thing happened with Salman Khan Prabhu Dhevas Wanted re-established Sallu miyaan as an actor after many duds, yaad hain? So wethinks Ajay shouldnt worry too much about script or direction, but concentrate on acting. Coz if Himmatwala was a dud, his performance in the film was as much to blame as Sajid Khans direction, hai na? PS: If Ajay doesnt want to make the same mistake again, he should learn to distinguish between a good script and a bad script. After all, he didnt sign Himmatwala at gunpoint, did he?

Manyata Dutt Admitted To The Hospital, Sanjay Dutt Pleads For Privacy The Munnabhai actor was out on a 30-day parole last month following
his wifes health condition

Sanjay Dutts wife Manyata Dutt is admitted at the Global hospital in Mumbais Parel area following illhealth and the family sent out an official statement to the media pleading privacy. The actors publicist sent out a request to the media on behalf of Dutt and his family. The statement read, Mr. Sanjay Dutts wife Ms. Manyata Dutt is hospitalised. Thank you for the concern. On behalf of Mr. Sanjay Dutt, this is to request you to kindly ask your teams to remove the camera units and OB Vans from near the Hospital area as it is getting difficult for the Hospital Management to manage their operations. And as this is a critical time for the family, we request for some privacy. Please kindly oblige and do the needful. We will update you with her health report from time to time. We really appreciate your unconditional support which has always been showered by the media to Mr. Dutts family. The attending Dr Ajay Chaughule also confirmed this news, She is very sick

and we are monitoring her medical parameters. Right now, no decision for any sort of surgery has been undertaken. Dutt who is serving his jail term in the 1993 bomb blasts case was granted parole by the Pune police last month on grounds of his wifes illness. Manyata is said to have a 6 cm tumour in her liver and it was said that the need be operated could arise after 15 years, however Mrs Dutts presence at the RRajkumar party ignited a controversy. There was also furor over Sanjays 30-day Parole, the actor had also availed 15 days leave in October on medical grounds, which was then extended by a fortnight. During his parole in December Dutt did travel to Panvel to spend some time with his good friend Salman Khan on the laters birthday, this despite being in eye of controversy over his parole and other news about the actor having ordered alcohol inside the prison. With wife in hospital will Sanjay again seek an extension this time around?

A little busybody birdie tells us that Ajay Devgan has been calling the shots on the sets of Prabhu Dhevas Action Jackson. In fact, Kajols hubby dearest is taking a keen interest in every shot and song sequence of his film, we hear. And it doesnt end there. The actor has even asked for a few changes to be made in the script. Is Ajay going the Aamir Khan way? Not at all! Mr Devgan has immersed himself in the project and wethinks its because he longer believes in his directors vision. The Singham star is nervous about the fact that Action Jackson could meet the same fate at the BO as the Shahid Kapoor-Sonkashi Sinha starrer R Rajkumar did. At The Movies Music a la Bond

Make a date in 2014 to sample the musical wares of Mr. bond courtesy of the Vancouver symphony Orchestra. Mark your calendars for Friday and Saturday night, Jan. 10 and 11 to be blown away by the sounds of James Bond. Through the magical force of guest conductor John Morris Russell you will be whisked away to the sexy sounds of the world's most famous British gentleman agent of them all. Dress up to kill as the strong vocals of twin Broadway sensations Capathia Jenkins and Ron Boshmer will deliver the goods in high flying style. With a repertoire of some 21 songs folks will be humming along with their shaken vodka martinis and beluga caviars on route to a fun joy joy filled evening. Let the good times roll and reminisce about those glory days when spying was a thing of beauty. Embrace the popular theme tunes from the classic Connery era emboldened by the musical genius of John Barry, Bond theme guitarist Vic Flick and the pulsating staccato Monty Norman theme. Sing along to the likes oaf Dame Shirley Bassey and Welshman Tom Jones as the VSO let's loose with evocative renditions of Goldfiner and Thunderball. No matter who your favourite Bond actor is you'll be in 007th heaven when the VSO gets down to business with this full on spectacular concert - for your ears only.

salons. With these products it is easier for women (and men) to achieve a healthy, smooth and beautiful skin. However, even though these products are effective, not all of these are safe. Talcum powder harsh. Facial skin is very delicate and waxing will only damage it. Waxing with waxing strips can be painful when the strip is removed from the skin and can cause infection if the skin gets bruised. The wax strip may disturb hair follicles, causing hair to begin to grow in different directions. Hair colours and hair dyes Before colouring your hair, it's important to know that allergic reactions to dyes can cause hair loss, burning, redness, itchy scalp, facial swelling and breathing difficulty. There are many chemicals in hair dyes that are known to be dangerous to human health. One of the worst chemicals found in hair dyes is P-Phenylenediamine, which is known to pose the following dangers: cancer, reproductive toxicity, neurotoxicity, allergies, immune- toxicity, irritation of skin, eyes, and/or lungs. Deodorants & antiperspirants

Cosmetics That Can Harm Your Skin Various cosmetics and skin care products are widely available in stores and

The chemical ingredients in talcum powder, like silicates talc is not only a potent carcinogen, it also causes allergies and infection in lungs. Talc absorbs moisture and so we use talcum powder to avoid perspiration. But this causes much damage to our skin. Talc particles are asbestos like, capable of moving through the reproductive system. They get embedded on the lining of the ovary, if applied in large excess. This finally results to ovarian cancer. Bleach creams

Skin bleaching is popular with darkerskinned people to obtain a fairer and even skin tone. Hydroquinone cream, the most common type of skin bleach can result in undesirable effects and significant skin damage. Hydroquinone is a fairly caustic substance with known adverse effects on the skin including redness, peeling, a rash, dryness and burning where you've applied the cream. Strong chemical bleach breaks down the oils that are supposed to keep your skin soft and supple and prevent formation of wrinkles. On the other hand, whitening can actually be healthy for your skin provided the skin lightening and brightening products contain natural ingredients; such as, organic herbal extracts and essential oils. Waxing

Scientific studies have shown that ingredients in deodorants and antiperspirants are harmful for your skin and body. It is a fact that deodorants cause irritation (because of alcohol) and redness which leads to itching and eventually pigmentation of the skin. The harmful effects of antiperspirants are greater than deodorants due to aluminum compounds in antiperspirants that block the sweat glands and can lead to conditions like contact dermatitis and allergy. Sweat glands discharge the waste from our body as sweat and if the waste is not being discharged from the body, it is unhealthy. Fragrance

Waxing for hair removal has its drawbacks; some people experience ingrown hairs, red bumps, and minor bleeding. Waxing on face causes the skin to sag earlier than it normally would as it pulls your skin and is

It is important to be informed that there are dangerous chemicals in cosmetics. Fragrance chemicals present in fabric softeners, laundry detergents, perfumes, personal care products, air fresheners and many other products contribute to health and environmental problems.

Whoever said love should be spontaneous and unplanned, was indeed right! But what if Cupid forgets your age, and makes you fall for a guy younger than you? Not bad, eh?! After all, life is too short to wake up with regrets. Looking back, you may thank your lucky stars for falling in love with the right guy. Nevertheless, if you've got the hots for a younger man or are dating one already, here are a few things you may want to consider. Life coach Malti feels that age has nothing to do with dating a younger man. "It is more about connection! However, if there is family oppsition once the couple decides to get married, then it's the guy who needs to take a stand and make it work. So at the end of the day, honesty, communication and clarity are the three things that help a relationship to a great extent," she says. Younger men can be a lot more fun. Dating itself is sheer fun considering the mystery that comes along with it. But with age, most men tend to get tied up with their professional lives leaving little or no scope of fun. This isnt usually the case with the younger lot who have a totally fresh, experimental approach to life. If not anything, you are in for a rollercoaster ride for sure! Nairita, who is in a steady relationship with a guy about two years younger than her, says that age is the last thing on her mind. "After all, you still fight for the remote control, and then make up with a smile! Since we've dated for around eight years now, I guess it was easier to mould ourselves in a way that suits 'us' best," she quips. Differences are inevitable. If you are dating a bloke several years younger, there are bound to be differences. Arguing over the kind of music you both enjoy is one thing, but what happens when bigger differences take over your relationship? Most of the time, it may mean compromising and thus inviting trouble for yourself. Nairita says, "There's no formula or user manual for dating younger men, because you wouldn't treat them like babies, now would you?" Malti says, "If you are compatible and can laugh away together during such situations, then nothing like it. The most important thing is to enjoy each other's company!" You will feel younger. A younger man may be from a different generation altogether. So while you may want to sit at a park and enjoy the evening, he on the other hand might insist on going clubbing. Looking at the world through his eyes is not a bad thing after all. Dating a younger guy can be exciting and seem like a challenge initially. The best part is that it makes you feel younger, says Aditi, who dated a guy a few years younger than her.

Dating a Younger Man: Hot or Not?

Relationships

He might still be a child. Dont let the child in you die - you must have heard this a hundred times, isnt it? If you are dating a younger guy, there is a high probability that he may not have grown up at all. The problem arises when you expect him to behave and act like a mature person, and he fails to do so. Aditi says, "I was fine with dating a younger guy, until I realised he was a kid. He'd end up being so emotional after every fight that it would get really irritating." He respects you for being the woman you are. Sometimes watching an older woman taking charge of her life is an eyeopener for men. Possibly that is the reason why the guy you are dating adores and respects you. The fact that you are older and come with much experience makes him look up to you. He may not understand responsibility. A younger guy is less likely to discuss the future (read: marriage and settling down) with you probably because he is not ready yet! And being an independent woman who believes in taking charge of your life, dating a man with zero sense of responsibility may cause an issue. If he cannot handle his responsibilities, he wouldnt understand their importance either. Living in the moment is sometimes good. You have often asked yourself to take life as it comes, havent you? Dating a younger guy is an indication that you wish to enjoy your present, rather than think about the future. Revelling in the present with him will make you realise how fun life is, and what it means to live in the moment. Uncertainty is not a good thing. While you are celebrating the present, you are most likely to ignore what life has in store for you. Your future is an inevitable truth, which you cannot brush off easily. In such a scenario, it may mean living in uncertainty which your guy may enjoy, but you definitely won't, in the long run. Malti also feels that when dating a younger man, there are bound to be unique obstacles and challenges. According to her, there are certain things that can help you make and stick to the decision. Some of these are: He should be mature enough to view each challenge or breakdown as an opportunity to stretch, learn and communicate. It is important to laugh at the jokes if you are going to make it through this one. If he is serious about you, he will be willing to take a stand. If he's just enjoying the fling and not into something long-term, then make sure you are in it with your eyes open. Does he use his age as an excuse to be flippant or to treat you badly?

A beautiful, radiant and glowing skin is every girl's dream. It's easy to achieve it by avoiding sugar as much as possible and by eating products such as olive oil, avocado and macadamia nut oil. Some simple changes to your nutrition intake that will greatly impact your skin: - Cut out the sugar: The less sugar we eat, the better it is. Many natural sweeteners like honey is high in fructose and should also be avoided as should sugary fruits (tropical fruits are the worst), fruit juice and dried fruit. Artificial sweeteners such as aspartame should be strictly avoided. Not only are they nasty chemical substances, but they have also been connected to obesity and diabetes. - Eat more healthy fat: One of the crucial things our body and our skin needs for long-term health is fat. Studies have shown that eating more fat makes our skin more elastic and less wrinkly. The increase in fat consumption has to be done in conjunction with sugar and grain reduction. Monounsaturated fats such as olive oil, avocado and macadamia nut oil are well-known to be good for us. - Greatly reduce your grain and starch intake: Most people believe that a diet rich in grains is good for health;

For Youthful Skin, Eat Healthy

whole grains in particular are touted as especially healthy. But starches, the carbohydrates in grains, are simply long strings of sugar molecules and eating them will still make our skin and body age prematurely. - Eat lots of vegetables: Vegetables will also provide you with plenty of fibre and antioxidants. However, make sure to cut down on starchy vegetables, as they can have a surprisingly strong effect on our blood sugar level. For example roast parsnips can bring up our blood sugar more than pure table sugar. Good fruit options are berries, as they are relatively low in sugar and high in antioxidants. - Don't forget your daily protein: Protein provides important building blocks for our entire body. However, our body has little capacity to store protein. So, to supply our body and skin with all it needs, we have to provide it with sufficient amounts of protein on a daily basis. - Spice up your life: Herbs and spices including rosemary, garlic, curcumin and cinnamon are a great addition to any skin health and longevity eating plan. Not only do spices greatly add flavour and variety of our food, but they also contain bioactive substances with positive effects on general health, skin and life span.

Prepare a set of rules for sound sleep and religiously follow them. Here are some of the sleep rules to stay healthy. - Set a seven days-a-week schedule: Go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time naturally, including holidays. Choose a time that's a minimum of eight hours before you need to wake up and follow it for one week straight. If you still feel tired you need an earlier bedtime (try just 15 to 30 minutes more). Once you can get up in the morning alarm-free and feel

alert most of the day, you've hit it just right. - Cut caffeine after 2 p.m: Most people feel tired late afternoon and feel the urge to have caffeine. It will definitely perk you up but it could linger long after you've left work. - Dim your devices: Many are addicted to checking social networking sites before sleeping. But the emitted light of the device is a problem. Avoid any electronics at least one hour before bed so that you don't need the sleep hormone.

Expecting mothers with no identified complications or concerns with pregnancy can travel by airplane without any worries but with caution, says an expert. Rita Bakshi, Chairperson of the International Fertility Centre, shares tips on how to help yourself to be safe while travelling during pregnancy: - Stay hydrated: Diarrhoea is a common

Stretching will improve appearance, flexibility, health, and overall performance. First, warm-up for 5-10 minutes at a low intensity (such as the elliptical machine, exercise bike, or treading mill) and stretch the muscles used. If your workout time allows it, a cardiovascular exercise for at least 20 minutes at a faster pace is recommended. Then, a 5-10 minute cool down at low intensity should be completed. Cool down for 5-10 minutes at a low intensity (50-60 per cent of your maximum heart rate). Now that you've warmed up, you should stretch every major muscle group. Why should you stretch? -It builds bigger, better-quality muscles.

Benefits Of Stretching

Berries like raspberries and strawberries will help to achieve a glow this party season, says an expert. They contain manganese, which has the ability to convert toxins within the skin cells into oxygen, reducing skin damage. You can even prepare a face mask with the fruity ingredient. Next time you go out in the sun to get some Vitamin D, think about mushrooms. Why mushrooms? Well, this is what is going to be your best source of Vitamin D soon. In order to give mushrooms a vitamin D boost, researchers exposed them to quick pulses of ultraviolet light. And voila! In less than a second, a mushroom with effectively no vitamin D had plenty of it! "The exciting thing I think is how rapidly we can take a mushroom that has no vitamin D in it whatsoever, and in less than one second we can increase the vitamin D content to over 100 percent (of the recommended daily allowance)," Michael Kalaras,

concern and it can lead to dehydration. So, make sure to drink plenty of water. - Right seat: It is more convenient to take aisle seat as this will allow you to get up more easily to reach the restroom or just to stretch your legs. - Comfortable clothes: Wear outfits which are comfortable and are not tight. - Seat belt: Seat belt will help you to be stable, but wear it below your belly.

scholar at Penn State University in Pennsylvania, was quoted as saying. Quick pulses of ultraviolet light flash over the mushroom's surface set off a chemical process that converts a compound similar to cholesterol inside the mushrooms into vitamin D. One serving of mushrooms has a day's worth of the recommended daily allowance of vitamin D, which is 600 IUs (or 15 micrograms) per day. Researchers suggest that smaller amounts of mushrooms may be all you need if you have other sources of vitamin D in your diet. The human body needs vitamin D to maintain bone health and helps regulate the immune system.

Canada Names Sochi Olympic Team Roster

Team Canadas management staff met for seven hours to decide on the final players on the 25-man roster for the Sochi Olympics, and predictably there was still plenty of debate over who made it and who didnt. In the final analysis, forwards Jeff Carter, Patrick Marleau and Chris Kunitz were named to the roster, while Martin St. Louis, Claude Giroux and Logan Couture were left off. Every one of us in Canada has an opinion on who should be on this team and nobodys wrong, executive director Steve Yzerman said Tuesday. Nobodys wrong because theyre all really good players. Ultimatel, this group is in charge of deciding who the 14 (forwards), eight (defencemen) and three (goalies) are. Of the 25, 11 won gold at the Vancouver Games. That includes Sidney Crosby, who scored the overtime winner in the 2010 final, and goaltender Roberto Luongo, who is likely to split the 2014 tournaments first two games with Carey Price. Forwards Jonathan Toews, Ryan Getzlaf, Corey Perry, Patrice Bergeron, Rick Nash and Marleau and defencemen Shea Weber, Duncan Keith and Drew Doughty also return from 2010. I like the makeup and (think) the experience of Stanley Cup-winners and 11 gold-medallists and 12 participants in the Olympics before is going to be key as we move forward, said Doug Armstrong, St. Louis Blues GM and member of Team Canadas management staff. Price and forwards John Tavares and Steven Stamkos lead the group of newcomers, which is full of youth and speed, which will be key on the international-sized ice surface. Other newcomers include forwards Kunitz and Matt Duchene and defencemen Jay Bouwmeester, Alex Pietrangelo and P.K. Subban, who was the subject of much debate leading up to Tuesdays announcement. In the end weve put together the best group of players we possibly can, coach Mike Babcock said. Now we have to become the best team we possibly can. Team Canada is

hoping to cash in on Kunitzs natural chemistry with his Penguins teammate Crosby. A lot of people have asked me is Kunitz being helped by Sidney Crosby, Yzerman said. They help each other. Hes a tremendous player and ultimately, we asked ourselves, does he belong on this team? And the answer is yes. St. Louis, snubbed in 2010 by Yzerman, was cut again this time around. Joe Thornton, Eric Staal and Dan Boyle were also considered candidates who didnt make the cut. Yzerman said St. Louis, who plays in Tampa, was an especially hard decision. Hes a tremendous hockey player who has played outstanding hockey for us in Tampa this year, said

Yzerman, who is the general manager of the Lightning. Our team has a good record and hes a big reason why our team is playing well. Lightning forward Stamkos status for the tournament is unclear as he continues to recover from a broken leg. Yzerman said his rehab is going well. If hes healthy hes one of the best 25 players, obviously, in Canada and should be on that team, said Yzerman. Canadas roster features two of the NHLs Top 3 scorers in Crosby (23 goals, 40 assists) and Getzlaf (20 goals and 28 assists). U.S. winger Patrick Kane (23 goals, 31 assists) is the other. Canada beat the United States in overtime to win the gold medal in 2010 when Crosby beat

Ryan Miller. It was Canadas second gold medal since the NHL began sending its players at the 1998 Nagano Games. Canada opens the Sochi Games Feb. 13 against Norway. TEAM CANADA ROSTER Goaltenders: Roberto Luongo, Carey Price, Mike Smith. Defencemen: Jay Bouwmeester, Drew Doughty, Dan Hamhuis, Duncan Keith, Alex Pietrangelo, P.K. Subban, MarcEdouard Vlasic, Shea Weber. Forwards: Jamie Benn, Patrice Bergeron, Jeff Carter, Sidney Crosby, Matt Duchene, Ryan Getzlaf, Chris Kunitz, Patrick Marleau, Rick Nash, Corey Perry, Patrick Sharp, Steven Stamkos, John Tavares, Jonathan Toews.

Fijian Roy Krishna has done his country proud again in soccer as he officially becomes a professional player. The New Zealand-based striker is the first Fijian to be a professional player after signing with New Zealand-based A-League club Wellington Phoenix this week. He joins them at training at Wellington. It is believed that Krishnas performance at the FIFA Club World Cup in Morocco late last year triggered the move for the 26-year-old Labasa lad. He is contracted to the Phoenix until the end of the 2013-14 A-League season. The other local player who had featured prominently in an Australia League competition is former Ba and national captain, Esala Masi, but at semi-professional level. Krishna will become the first Fijian to participate in the A-League which started in 2004. Solomon Islands duo, Benjamin Totori and Henry Faroodo, are the other Pacific Islands to have played in the A-League. Fiji Football Association president Rajesh Patel commended the Siberia, Labasa native for his success. I congratulate Krishna. that if a professional club came for me, they would let me go and they have kept their word, he said. Phoenix head coach Ernie Merrick said he looked forward to working with Krishna. When we played Auckland City preseason the two players who stood out for me were Albert Riera and Roy Krishna, Merrick said. Riera did a good, simple job in midfield winning the ball and passing it well, and he has made the transition from ASB Championship to A-League with some top-class performances. Krishna was quick with close technical skills and an eye for goal, and when I researched his record I was impressed. He seems the sort of player capable of taking the next step and scoring goals in the A-League. The record Merrick was speaking about shows Krishna has scored 14 goals in 22 appearances for Fiji, while at Waitakere United, who he joined in 2008, he netted 72 times in 103 appearances. In the Oceania Football Championships, he scored 16 goals in 27 games, while in the Northern League it was 17 in 32. Krishna started training with the Phoenix for the first time. Phoenix is currently ninth on the A-League and will play their match on Sunday.

country as Roy playing at the highest level in the Oceania region can make room for other local players. Krishna is an ambassador for Fiji Football and I wish him well. This is the first step and I hope that he will have a successful stint in the A-League. Krishna said joining the Phoenix was something he had aimed for. Ive always dreamed of playing in the A-League for the Wellington Phoenix. It feels great to be finally part of it, Krishna said. I cant wait to get to Wellington and start working with the team. I love scoring goals and my goal is to get in the team and do just that. I am up for the challenge and really pleased that Auckland City have allowed me to take up this opportunity. They always said

The Fiji Rugby Union has clarified the issue regarding Fiji 7s Head Coach, Ben Ryans contract. Acting Chief Executive Officer and Board Director Dr Berlin Kafoa has responded saying that it was a mutual agreement between Ben Ryan and the FRU. This is to confirm that Ryan volunteered for three months after being appointed as National Coach due to the financial situation of the FRU. The FRU and Fiji are indeed grateful to Ben Ryan who made two personal

sacrifices when he accepted his appointment. Firstly the package offered is less than what Ben would have earned in England and secondly he volunteered at a time when FRU was facing financial difficulties. Ryans impact and passion about 7s rugby has shown results in Dubai. The FRU is indebted to Ryan for taking on the task and taking the team to greater heights on a voluntary basis. FRU had also waited for the 2014 National Budget where an allocation for the hiring of Professional Overseas Coaches to train and develop our sportsmen and women into world class athletes. The FRU has applied to the Fiji Sports Commission for a grant based on the 2014 Budget allocation which will be used for Ben Ryans salary. We are still waiting for the Fiji Sports Commission to respond to our application. Ben Ryan has officially signed his FRU contract which will be until 2016 and we look forward to working closely

with him. We as nation should applaud a foreign individual who is willing to make personal scarifies for the love of rugby in Fiji. Ryan said that he was working with a team and in a country that he loved. It is a very exciting time coming up for Fijian rugby and Im very grateful to be part of this unique journey. I am loving being in the country and working with the team and I just want to give it my all to help contribute as much as I can.
