    The gastrocnemius flap can be used to cover defects of the leg and knee. It has a reliable blood supply from the medial and lateral sural arteries. The medial head is more suited for the flap since it has a longer muscle body and no risk to the common peroneal nerve. The medial head can be elevated on its neurovascular pedicle and rotated to cover the proximal and medial aspects of the knee.
