prevent neck injuries by reducing the force that
the spine experiences in head-rst impacts.
The technology features a movable inner shell
that guides the head to tilt slightly in a head-on

the cervical spine. In early testing the device has
reduced neck loads by up to 56 percent.

THE ENGINEERING CONTEXT
Engineers are applied scientists, visionaries and
solution nders who work in a variety of scientic,
technical, humanitarian and sociological elds.
An environmental engineer might create a new
water ltration process; a computer systems
engineer might design a ground-breaking
communications technology; a civil engineer
might become an urban planner. What unites
this diverse group of professionals is the ability
to envision what could be, the know-how to test
ideas using engineering-specic modeling and
the technical skills to translate ideas into action.
THE UNIVERSITY OF BRITISH COLUMBIA
Consistently ranked among the top 40
universities in the world, the University of British
Columbia is one of Canadas largest and most
prestigious research and teaching institutions.
UBC consistently ranks among the top 10 North
American universities in commercialization and
patenting activities. From here, your idea could
become the next big thing!
With more than 50,000 undergraduate, graduate

LIVE
UBC is located on two campuses that showcase the splendor
of British Columbia. The Vancouver campus is on a stunning
peninsula overlooking the Strait of Georgia to the west and the
Coast Mountains to the north and east; UBC Okanagan, the
Kelowna campus, is 274 kilometres to the northeast, nestled at the
west edge of Canadas Rocky Mountains in BCs verdant interior.
Vancouver was recently ranked the most livable city in the world
by The Economist magazine. Its easy to see why: in addition
to being a safe, clean city with excellent dining, shopping and
cultural activities, Vancouver is close to nearly every activity you
can imagine. Take a drive up to Whistler for an autumn afternoon
of mountain biking, head to Cypress to catch fresh powder on
Olympic snowboarding runs or rent a kayak and tour the Pacic
Ocean inlets.
Kelowna is a smaller city, rich with year-round recreation.
Rollerblade along the shores of Lake Okanagan, cool off wake-
boarding on a summer afternoon or explore old-growth forests on
horseback. When the snow falls, youre just 45 minutes from Big
White, one of Canadas most popular snow-sports destinations.

chance for me to explore my
urban environment.
COMPUTER ENGINEERING PROGRAMS
William Gallego
Richmond, BC
UBC was my rst choice, based on
both its location and prestige. My
experience here has revealed to me
where my real interests lie and has
tested the extent of my capabilities.
Since high school, I have wanted
to become a computer software
engineer. Selecting Computer
Engineering was my path to making
this a reality.
YOUR OPPORTUNITIES

The engineering faculty is col-
laborative, with opportunities to
work across disciplines on select
projects. I am attracted by the
idea that I can design new
solutions, rather than simply
memorize the results.
ADMISSION FROM HIGH SCHOOL
Admission to UBC Engineering is competitive. Every year we
receive more applications than we have spaces. Admission is
typically based on the average of senior-level coursework in
English, Math, Chemistry and Physics. In some cases broader-
based achievements are considered. Entry requirements are
subject to change.
In addition to high academic standards, UBC Engineering
recognizes the benets of previous technical work and extra-
curricular activities. Students are encouraged to submit
supplementary information as part of the application process.

COLLEGE, UNIVERSITY OR INTRA-UBC TRANSFERS
Students who have completed one or more years of study in a
science-based program at UBC or another college or university
may apply to transfer to Engineering with advanced standing.
There are several community colleges in B.C. that offer transfer
programs corresponding to UBCs rst-year Engineering program.
Students completing one of these approved programs with a
minimum GPA of 2.5 are admitted directly into their second year
of Engineering at UBC. For details visit: www.engineering.ubc.ca/

DISCOVER UBC OKANAGAN
In 2005, UBC Okanagan opened its doors to
students seeking an intimate learning experience
in a cohesive, supportive environment. The
School of Engineering is based on 100 years of
engineering teaching and research experience
on the Vancouver campus. Students are part
of a close-knit student body and participate
in experiential learning and research. A BASc
degree from the School of Engineering opens
the door to some of the most exciting career
opportunities available today.
UBC Okanagan student clubs provide cultural,
academic and recreational exploration, while
intramural sports offer a chance to make new
friends while keeping your body as t as
your mind.
THE ACADEMIC EXPERIENCE
For the rst two years, you will focus on
integrated and multidisciplinary engineering
courses to provide you with a comprehensive
knowledge base. After completing Engineering
One, you will choose a specic concentration
civil, electrical or mechanical engineering and
then continue with the integrated program of
Engineering Two for your second year.
The Design from the Start approach ensures
you apply your knowledge of engineering to
design projects in a project-based team learning
environment, even in your rst year. The School
of Engineering also offers many opportunities
for eld-work and real-world learning, including
participation in Engineers Without Borders, and
valuable professional experience via the
Co-op program.
