BEPAC Acoustics Library Classification system

FOREWORD The BEPAC Acoustics Library Classification System is a development of the BEPAC Building Acoustics Library Classification System, originally published in 1993, having been prepared by Task Group 5 of the Building Environmental Performance Analysis Club. During the preparation of the document, the active participants of Task Group 5 were: Peter Henson (Chairman) Peter Allaway Richard Bines Tina Emmanuel Steven Gardner Cliff Inman John Miller Ali Peyvandi Mike Wilson Bickerdike Allen Partners Grootenhuis Allaway Associates Sharpes Redmore Partnership Building Research Establishment Hann Tucker Associates Pilkington Glass Ltd Acoustic Consultant ASA Environmental Services University of North London

The system was devised by John Miller and developed and edited to reflect comments received from the members of the then Task Group and the following individuals, to whom draft material was circulated: Marian Bodian BRE Library Martin West University of Salford Roger Wills Royal Berkshire County Hospital The member firms of the Association of Noise Consultants Since its original publication, the system has been expanded and developed for use as a classification system for the Institute of Acoustics library. The members of the Institute of Acoustics Working Group who undertook this development of the system are: Christine Cheepen Bob Chivers Peter Dobbins Alison Hill John Miller Institute of Acoustics Physics Department, University of Surrey BAe SEMA Institute of Acoustics Acoustic Consultant

The final document reflects comments received from members of the then current BEPAC Special Interest Group 5, who were: Peter Henson (Chairman) Tina Emmanuel Steven Gardner Bob Peters Bickerdike Allen Partners Building Research Establishment The Equus Partnership North East Surrey College of Technology

Minor amendments were made by John Miller on 7 January 2002. New categories were introduced to cover previous omissions and each such entry is indicated in italics.

BEPAC Acoustics Library Classification System

INTRODUCTION Scope The BEPAC Acoustics Library Classification System provides a method by which papers, articles dissertations and books on acoustical subjects may be classified. The system is aimed at the following users: Consultants in acoustics, noise and vibration Environmental Health Officers specialising in noise control Building Services Engineers Architects who specialise in acoustics and noise control Acoustic specialists in the manufacturing industries Manufacturers of noise and vibration control products Those involved in the teaching of acoustics Acoustics researchers The system has been adopted by the Institute of Acoustics library. System of classification The subject matter is divided into twelve main classes. These are numbered 0000, 0100, 0200....1200. The main classes are listed on page 6. Each class is divided into ten sub-classes, each of which is divided into 10 further sub-classes. For example: Class 0300 is Environmental noise Class 0320 is Transportation Class 0324 is Railways and: Class 0400 is Sound insulation Class 0430 is Building envelope Class 0433 is Windows

As with other library classification systems, further sub-divisions can be created by extending the classification number using digits grouped in threes and separated by decimal points. In a limited number of subject areas, an extension of the present system would have merit. For example, Class 0324.5 would logically be Prediction methods for railway noise. However, there is not a general need for extended numbering and it has been rejected in favour of simplicity. Classification of subjects In the parts of the system which cover acoustics and noise and vibration in buildings, classification can be made either according to building type or acoustical topic. The principle adopted here has been to divide the subject matter according to the acoustical topic, wherever possible. This is because acoustical information will frequently apply to a wide range of building types. It is recognised, however, that some provision must be made for building types. The way this has been done is illustrated below by considering the classification of information relating to a typical task in Building Acoustics - the assessment of road traffic noise in a building. Example 1: Classification of information relating to the assessment of road traffic noise in a building The assessment process involves the calculation of traffic noise incident on the building, consideration of the transmission of noise through an element in the building envelope, such as a window, and the comparison of the resulting noise level with criteria for noise in the building. The method of calculation of road traffic noise does not vary according to building type and therefore such information should be uniquely classified under 0321 (Environmental noise/ Transportation/ Road traffic). Similarly, the sound insulation of a window is not dependent on the type of building in which it is installed and a classification somewhere in 0400 (Sound insulation) would be appropriate. General information on the sound insulation of windows should be classified under 0433 (Sound insulation/ Building envelope/ Windows). Sound insulation data for windows should be classified under 0491 (Sound insulation/ Sound insulation data/ Airborne sound insulation), which provides for the collection of sound insulation data for various building components in one place. The final part of the task - comparing the resulting noise level with criteria - does require information relating to building type and a choice will have to be made. An article which presents internal traffic noise criteria for a variety of building types should be classified under 0321 (Environmental noise/ Transportation/ Road traffic). Where an article presents internal noise criteria for a particular building

BEPAC Acoustics Library Classification system

type and a variety of noise sources, including road traffic, it is preferable to classify it according to building type. Class 0420 (Sound insulation/ Criteria) has been sub-divided according to building type. If, for example, the building in question is an office, the article should be classified under 0423 (Sound insulation/ Criteria/ Offices). In contrast to other principal divisions, Class 0700 (Acoustics of spaces) is largely sub-divided according to building type. An article which covers a wide range of acoustical topics, including room acoustics, should be classified in the appropriate sub-division in Class 0700. Where a user has a significant quantity of information about a building type which is not represented in Class 0700 and considers 0738 (Acoustics of spaces/ Rooms/ Miscellaneous rooms) and 0789 (Acoustics of spaces/ Miscellaneous/ Other) inappropriate, the system may be adapted by allocating an unused number in an appropriate area of the system to the building type in question. As with all library systems, it is often the case that a given article will not match a unique classification number and the user will have to exercise judgement in classifying it. The user is assisted in making such choices by extensive cross-referencing throughout the system. Two, more complex, examples follow. They illustrate the choices open to the user for each of two building types - recording studios and hospital buildings. Example 2: Classification of material relating to recording studios An article which contains information on recording studios may be filed in any of the following locations, depending on its emphasis: 0425 0449 Sound insulation/ Criteria/ Recording and broadcast studios where the article relates to sound insulation criteria for studios. Sound insulation/ Internal divisions/ High performance constructions where the article relates to constructional methods used to achieve high standards of sound insulation (e.g. room-within-room constructions). Building services/ General and theory/ Criteria where the article provides building services noise criteria for a variety of building types, including studios. Acoustics of spaces/ Recording and broadcasting studios where the article contains information on room acoustical conditions within studios. Electro-acoustics where the article relates to recording sound systems or components.

0512

0760 0800

Where an article is of a general nature, covering a wide range of acoustical topics in relation to recording studios, it should be classified under 0760. Example 3: Classification of material relating to hospitals An article which contains information on hospitals may be filed in any of the following locations, depending on its emphasis: 0395 Environmental noise/ Effects of noise on the community/ Health effects where the article relates to the ways in which noise can affect the health of patients in hospital.

0429

Sound insulation/ Criteria/ Other building types where the article relates to sound insulation or noise targets for hospital rooms (or rooms in other building types not covered elsewhere in 0420). Building services/ General and Theory/ Criteria where the article relates to background noise targets for building services plant and includes hospitals. Acoustics of spaces/ Rooms/ Miscellaneous rooms where the article relates to room-acoustical conditions in spaces in hospital buildings. Legislation, standards, regulations and guidelines/ UK organisations/ Hospital authorities where the article is published by, or relates to, hospital authorities.
