The Standard for Appliance Wiring Material UL 758 - Addition of IEC 60332-1, -2 Flame Testing

UL 62368 is an information technology equipment (ITE) standard that will eventually replace UL 60950 and UL 60650. In UL 62638, various clauses reference the IEC 60332-1 and 60332-2 small scale flame tests for wiring. Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) is typically used as the wiring for products covered by UL 62638. However, UL 758 does not contain the option to perform the IEC 60332-1 and -2 tests on AWM. A proposal has been made to provide the option. Comments were due 9/23/2013.

Standard for Optical Fiber Cables UL 1651

A proposal was recently prepared to the Standards Technical Panel (STP) to revise UL1651 to specify a minimum 60C rating.
Article 770.179 of the NEC was previously revised to require Optical Fiber cables have a temperature rating of not less than 60 C.

Standard for Photovoltaic Wire -UL 4703

UL will soon be publishing the first edition of the Standard for Photovoltaic Wire, UL 4703. Prior to this new standard, UL published an Outline of Investigation covering these wires. Major differences between the outline and the new standard are the elimination of the use of 1350 aluminum conductors and the addition of non-jacketed multiple conductor assemblies of PV wires.

Standard for Nonmetallic-Sheathed Cables UL 719 - Deletion of the Conductor Pullout Test
The conductor pullout test formerly conducted on 14 10 AWG flat Type NM-B containing 2 or 3 circuit conductors with a grounding conductor has been deleted from the standard The available of new jacket stripping tools replacing the traditional box cutter, the cable construction permitting a reduced effort to pull the cable through joists during installation, and the requirements for cable securement were the rational supporting the proposal.

Electrical Power and Control Tray Cables with Optional Optical-Fiber Members UL1277 Addition of DC Dielectric Voltage Withstand Test
UL 1277, the Standard for Electrical Power and Control Tray Cables with Optional Optical-Fiber Members, now includes a DC dielectric voltage-withstand test in addition to the AC test previously required.
UL 44 and UL 83 permit either AC or DC voltage for the dielectric voltage-withstand test. This DC test, conducted on finished reels of cable, requires that the test be performed using a DC voltage equal to 3 times the required AC voltage.

Standard for Cord Sets and Power-Supply Cords UL 817

The formal CANENA binational effort to harmonize UL 817 and CSA C22.2 No. 21, Cord Sets, has been terminated. The project will be replaced by a UL standard and a separate CSA standard that are based on the current harmonized and balloted binational draft of the standard from this year. The time required to revise a harmonized standard is non-conducive to the current needs of the industry. There has been little involvement from Industry in recent years on the Technical Harmonization Committee (THC) with only one or two main supporters.

Small Scale Flame Rated Wire

This cable is intended for use as an external interconnecting cable in lengths not more than 3.05 meters used with UL 60950-1 and/or UL 62368-1 equipment. These external cables are intended to connect to SELV/LPS (UL 60950-1 circuit designations) and ES1/PS2 or LPS (UL 62368-1 energy source designations). This wire/cable has only been evaluated in accordance with UL 2556, VW-1 flame test. FT1 also covered

AWM Compounds

The materials covered under this category are intended for further processing as components of complete Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) constructions. These compounds have been investigated and are considered suitable for use as an insulation, covering or jacket of an AWM, subject to the ratings indicated for the specific grade. These compounds have been tested in accordance with the methods outlined in ANSI/UL 758, Standard for Appliance Wiring Material.

Appliance Wiring Material (AWM) Compounds - Scope

The use of these compounds in AWM is optional, not mandatory. A manufacturer choosing to source one of these compounds will have a reasonable level of assurance that the compound, if processed correctly, will meet all of the requirements in UL 758 for the particular construction.
The test program for this category will include the particular requirements in UL 758 for the specific component (insulation, covering, jacket) as well as analytical tests to identify or finger print the compound. Follow-Up Services (FUS) testing of the compound will include the analytical tests.

2014 NEC Significant Changes

260

Proceedings of the 62nd IWCS Conference

International Wire & Cable Symposium 261 Proceedings of the 62nd IWCS Conference

Increase in Wire Rating: 600 to 1000 V

Due to the demand for increasing voltage levels used in wind generation and photovoltaic systems, proposals were made and accepted to increase the maximum voltage rating of certain wiring methods to 1000 V.

Included in the revision are the wires found in Table 310.104(A) such as Types THW, THHN, XHHW, and RHW. Per the 2014 NEC, these conductors may be rated up to 1000 V if Listed and marked. A NEMA Task Force was formed in order to assess the impact on building wire insulation thickness and performance requirements in light of the NEC revision.

21

International Wire & Cable Symposium 262 Proceedings of the 62nd IWCS Conference

Increase in Wire Rating: 600 to 1000 V

The NEMA Task Force extensively reviewed a spreadsheet of wire types in UL 83 and UL 44, which summarized insulation wall thicknesses and references to Long-Term IR, Spark test voltages, and voltages for Dielectric-Voltage Withstand.
Overall, there is a need to determine whether performance requirements for 600 V rated conductors can be increased to those specified for 1000 V rated conductors without the need to increase insulation thicknesses. Data is being gathered to substantiate maintaining existing insulation wall thicknesses. Proposals to revise the effected standards to include the 1000 V requirements (if different from those for 600 V) would then be made.

Article 400 Flexible Cords and Cables

The NEC added two flexible cords types, HSJO and HSJOOW, to Table 400.4 which tabulates cord types, their voltage ratings, conductor size ranges, insulation thickness as well as other construction details.
Cords or cables consisting of integral insulation and a jacket without a non-integral grounding conductor (for example Type SPT-1) shall be permitted to be green.
