General information
Reading a skill book permanently raises the corresponding skill by three points (four with the Comprehension perk). With a few exceptions, the skill books are identical to the books from Fallout 3. The newly added Survival skill uses the Wasteland Survival Guide as a skill book. U.S. Army: 30 Handy Flamethrower Recipes from Fallout 3 has been removed, since the Big Guns skill has been dissolved into other skills. There are, on average, four copies of every skill book in the base game. Dead Money adds an additional copy of each skill book type, with the exception of Wasteland Survival Guide. Honest Hearts introduces the Workbench crate, a container with random loot that has a chance of containing various skill books, but no static book locations. Old World Blues adds two copies of Chinese Army: Spec Ops Training Manual and a copy of Big Book of Science, in addition to a new mechanic enabling the player to create a single copy of each book at a workbench using 25 blank books, two tubes of wonderglue and the appropriate recipe. Finally, Lonesome Road adds an additional copy of each skill book.

The first number in parentheses indicates the total number of skill books with all add-ons included. The second number in parentheses is the total number of skills books with Old World Blues Skill book crafting mechanic included.

In a corner of the canyon south of the Y-0 building, betw een tw o xander root plants by the hand of a skeleton. In the East Chapel, dow n in the gecko-filled basement, on the floor at the foot of some metal shelves. In the Goodsprings Home inhabited by Trudy and Sunny Smiles, East from the Schoolhouse, on a bookshelf. (Must be stolen unless the Run Goodsprings Run quest has been completed).

On some papers, by the corner desk inside the Sharecropper Barracks near the four w ater tow ers in the northeast corner of the fenced in area. (Must be stolen) In the eastern most room of the sw itching station there is a huge machine on the south side of the room. The book is located on the catw alk that runs around the machine. Its the only portion of catw alk in this room that you have to jump to. Living Quarters, right after you come dow n the stairs from the recreation area. Through the 50 Lock/Security door. Turn right on the 2nd shelf. On the floor, opposite the door in the room w here you get the chest plate for the sneak suit. In the rew ard safe upon completion of all the Stealth Suit tests. On a bookshelf facing the w all (hidden from view ) on the S/E landing up one flight of stairs from the ground floor interior entrance. Can be exposed by placing/throw ing explosives onto the bookshelf, underneath the filing cabinet. Just after exiting the Cave of the Abaddon in the south corner under a nightstand in the room w ith the bed and the exit to The Divide. On the beside table shelf, by the bed on the right, in the second room. Upstairs in the main building, lying on a bed in the same room w ith the east terminal passw ord. (Head to the right from main entrance, through the pool room, and right up the stairs.) Inside Hell's Motel, below the globe w ith a hat, on the table w ith the radio and repair kit. In the middle of the queen-sized bed, inside Ranger Andy's bungalow (must be stolen). In the Villa Clinic basement, in a tool cabinet next to some fire extinguishers.

Note: If the game is unpatched (installed straight from disk w ithout being patched), the door w ill be unlocked and you w ill be able to enter and get the book. Nellis Air Force Base Hopeville Missile Silo Bunker Puesta del Sol Sw itching Station Inside Loyal's house, on the long counter next to the ruined terminal (must be stolen). When w alking into the room w ith the first missile, the book is located to the left in some rubble.(Left of the stairs) Puesta del Sol Sw itching Station in the south center of the map on the upper level next to the terminal that shuts off pow er to the protected speakers. It is very difficult, but possible, to reach w ithout Christine (her perk delays the speakers) and disarm the trip w ire before your collar detonates. In the Worker Barracks, on the top shelf to your left as you enter (must be stolen). A Duck and Cover! can be found in the same building. In the shack, on the table w ith the clipboard and scrap metal. Just south of the exit to The High Road, behind some sand bags, the book is in a crate hiding underneath a teddy bear. It is inside the Mojave Outpost barracks, on the bottom shelf, in the middle, below the bar counter. It must be stolen, but can be bought if caught. It is among the books on the shelf, above the grenade rifle, inside Pearl's Barracks (must be stolen). It is on the table next to Comm Officer Lenk. On the PC version w ith patch 1.2 there are tw o books, one on top of the other. It is stuck underneath the bed in the same room w here you first meet Dean Domino. The book is only obtainable by using explosives and dropping throw ing spears to force the book out. It is inside the w orker barracks on the back left shelf under a first aid box. (Must be stolen). An ow ned copy of Dean's Electronics can be found here as w ell. On the mattress near the radio, close to the fire (must be stolen). Inside the HQ building, upper floor, inside the nightstand next to the bed (must be stolen). Resting on one of the large metal crates, in the cave, sometimes behind the metal crates. Lying in front of the oven, in the first bungalow to the east as you head tow ards the lodge. Inside the Police Station Basement, on the floor in the room in the Northw est corner in front of the filing cabinets. At the back of the barracks on a small table under a ruined book. In Big Sal's office, up the stairs from the main level of Brimstone. It is on the first low bookshelf on the left as you w alk in (must be stolen). On the desk w ithout the computer in the entrance open-plan office room, nearest the door leading to the cells. Inside the shack, in the w ooden crate next to the door. On an open locker shelf, in the upstairs room w ith the chessboard (must be stolen). On the floor among the office desks. Inside the Lucky Jim Mine house, on the bottom shelf below a varmint rifle. Second floor of the NCR CF administration, on a desk (must be stolen). The Tampico, on a shelf, opposite the holotape projector. In the eastern most corner underneath a physician's desk (may have fallen off building after detonating w arhead). In the w hite plastic bin by the desk in Schuler's office. Bunker L1, w est of the central hub corridor junction (must be stolen). Located in the first room on a shelf hidden underneath a burned book. Inside the irradiated shack on the small table opposite to the exit. 1st Floor, past the 100 Lock/Security door on top of the safe. (Or sneak up to the 3rd floor and get the key from the suitcase next to the skeleton). The room can also be accessed through a hole in the floor of a room on the w est side of the 2nd floor (Must pick the lock on the door. It is a level 75 lock <Hard>). 2nd Floor, turn left, first door. On the desk w ith the lit computer. Right before you enter the vault door turn around and jump dow n to the pipes below the w alkw ay, there is a duffle bag w ith the book inside. The only w ay back is to go east from the bag and jump on the valved pipe then back to main platform. On the bedside table inside the shack. Inside the store lying on a shelf on the south w all in the middle of the room. Inside the Presidential suite in the Tops casino. Inside Pool Room on the tiny table in the corner. Inside the living quarters, in female dorm #1, by the fallen dresser near a small sign on the ceiling that says "Ladies". Behind the fountain w here you start the Dead Money add-on. In the north-east corner of the third room, behind a set of tipped-over lockers. In the largest room (w est) on the floor in front of the Nuka-Cola Machine. On the suitcase by the bed, in the small back cellar room. Located through a cellar door on the eastern w all of the building, dow nstairs on a table near some gore on the north-w est w all. Inside the Bison Steve Hotel, on the floor of the gift shop, behind the counter. In a building opposite the door to Salida del Sol House, on a book shelf. In the lab room (up the stairs from the elevator) in Pest Control, on the table w ith the bubbling vials. Inside the office shack to the w est, on the desk in the smaller of the tw o rooms. Inside the Hopeville men's barracks, in the toilets underneath an upturned box. In the casino floor area, 3rd floor office room to south east w ith auto doc, on top of a tool cabinet in room's northeast corner Inside the shack, behind the tw o small tables, on the ground in an open locker, right of the entrance. In a box betw een the duffle bag and metal box. (Replaced by 2 skill magazines in the patch 1.2.0.31x) Inside the caves, in the subterranean den structure, in the large barracks room, on the floor in the far right corner. With the total amount of skill points earned from reading every obtainable skill book (not counting the ones found as random loot in Honest Hearts ), and with the Comprehension perk, the PC will have gained a total of 380 skill points (285 without it). The Workbench crate skill books found in Honest Hearts can make up an additional 64 skill points with Comprehension (48 without it), assuming the maximum of 4 skill books per crate, for a total of 444 skill points with Comprehension (333 without it). Although it is possible to obtain the maximum of 16 (non combat related) skill books the likelihood is extremely low (see Workbench crate page). It would be more realistic to hope for the total amount of 8 skill books. Theoretically approximately 1 out of 5 save/reload trials (before entering the caves) or using the console, selecting it, and typing r e s e t i n v e n t o r yshould result in 2 random skill books. If the player has the Comprehension perk it still should be enough to max out all skills.
