CHAPTER 1 THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND Introduction

Can you imagine doing ministry the last five hundred years and getting away with Sorry, I dont do books? Can you imagine doing ministry in the next five years and getting away with Sorry, I dont do Facebook?

Facebook is a popular free social networking website that allows registered users to create profiles, upload photos and video, send messages and keep in touch with friends, family and colleagues. (http://whatis.techtarget.com/definition/Facebook) It acts as your public diary where people whom you really know and dont really know interfere with it. Facebook has 1.19 billion monthly active users (Craig Smith, 2013) and large portion of the population of the Facebook were students and using this site for communicating. Nowadays, Facebook wasnt use just for communicating but also for academic purposes. Some professors in universities and colleges use Facebook to send copies of lectures to their students. They make a group in Facebook where files can be sent privately with the members only. This is for academic purposes of the students. If Facebook was use just for playing games,

adding new friends, uploading pictures that are not related to academic purposes and browsing up your friends profile just to say hi was considered as non-academic purposes of students. As technological changes the peoples way of communicating it also changes the peoples development in everyday activity especially in studying. Due to the powerful impact of social networking sites especially Facebook, students especially those who are in the first year of their college life changes the way they study and how Facebook helps them in their academic performances.

Statement of the Problem The general problem of the study is to know the effectiveness of using Facebook in the study habit of freshmen education students in Bulacan State University. This research paper tries to answer the following questions: 1. Does Facebook really help to further their studies? 2. To what extent does Facebook helps the students academically? 3. How the professor does help them to further their studies? 4. How does Facebook could not help them in studies?

Significance of the Study This research study focuses on how Facebook shows its effectiveness in the studies of college students especially in freshmen. Facebook is not created to be a forum in studying but, it is created to extent the communication in studying. Knowing how Facebook will be useful for further study and what are the ways to avoid Facebook if it is not helping the students in

academic purposes. Students will be informed that there are ways to avoid being distracted while studying in the use of Facebook. They should have a study plan so they wont be distracted in going back and forth to check their profile to update a status. In knowing the students perspective in the use of Facebook in studying, they can manage to convince their professors to update them in their lessons and be reminded that when the students open up their Facebook account, they would probably look up for their professors posts about the lesson. They can allow the easy access of their professors in reaching them to extent their studies. The students will benefit and be informed about this research study and know what to do and how Facebook will help them in their studies. They may also apply that there should be proper time management in checking status updates and checking posted lessons from professors. Be responsible and be disciplined on your priorities to avoid being distracted.

Scope and Delimitation This research was focused in knowing the perspective of freshmen education students of Bulacan State University in the role of facebook in their studies. With the respondent in the number of ten (10) freshmen education students having five (5) females and five (5) males in the entire population of all freshmen in the College of Education. Interviewing students was used in this study to know clearly their perspective and including their experiences so the research will be qualitative in nature.
