TheOrtolanitestorOrtolanimaneuverispartofthephysical examinationfordevelopmentaldysplasiaofthehip,alongwiththe Barlowmaneuver.[1] Itrelocatesthedislocationofthehipjointthathasjustbeenelicited bytheBarlowmaneuver. Itisperformedbyanexaminerfirstflexingthehipsandkneesofa supineinfantto90degrees,thenwiththeexaminer'sindexfingers placinganteriorpressureonthegreatertrochanters,gentlyand smoothlyabductingtheinfant'slegsusingtheexaminer'sthumbs. Apositivesignisadistinctive'clunk'whichcanbeheardandfelt asthefemoralheadrelocatesanteriorlyintotheacetabulum:[2] Specifically,thistestsforposteriordislocationofthehip. Thisispartofthestandardinfantexamperformedpreferablyin earlyinfancyitusuallybecomesnegativeafter2monthsofage. ItisperformedwiththeBarlowmaneuverandinspectionofthe hipjointandlegs. ItisnamedforMarinoOrtolani,whodevelopeditin1937.[3]
