Nokia Synfonet STM-1/4

Product flexibility allows operators the benefit of investing according to their needs at the time of the investment. With the build-as-you-go concept, operators can expand network elements when the actual demand arises. Adding to this flexibility, centralized upgrades can be made easily with remote software download, which in turn reduces the O&M costs. Synfonet STM-1/4 is a modular multipurpose DXC 4/1 with full connectivity. It is suitable for an STM-4 regional node in TM/ADM/DXC configurations, a hub node optimizing STM-1 access rings and spurs, and in dynamic network applications where STM-1 and -4 capacity changes are expected. The node type can be changed by simply adding more plug-in units without replacing the existing units thus ensuring the original investments. This versatility and flexibility also reduces the amount of spares and training. All SDH cross-connection levels are supported including the 64 kbit/s level. The cross-connection architecture is designed to support full DXC functionality (symmetric and non-blocking) at all VC levels. All interfaces are equal; i.e. it is possible to build DXC using any interface type. The node can be equipped with up to 4 STM-4 interfaces, or up to 15 STM-1 interfaces or STM-1E, 140M, 45M, 34M and 2M tributary interfaces. The Single Fibre working provides assistance in fibre-scarce areas where fibre is leased. For mobile transmission needs, the Synfonet STM-1/4 offers interfaces for BSC-site equipment thus enabling Nokia to offer a complete mobile network with protected transmission and management.

The quality of the network is ensured by both path and hardware protection. The common functions of the STM-1/4 node are all hardware protected. Synchronization is protected using Synchronization Status Messaging and priority lists of different synchronization sources. Synfonet STM-1/4 is managed by Nokia Network Management System which includes the NMS/10 Network Element Manager and NMS/100. The node itself has full Q3 interface with IS-IS routing providing protected management networks.
