SET 4 OF 8 (UNIT 1) PROBLEM 1:- Determine the changes in length, breadth and thickness of a steel bar which is 4m long, 30mm wide and 20mm thick and is subjected to an axial pull of 30kN in the direction of its length. Take = 2 105 /2 , and Poissons ratio=0.3. Also find the volumetric strain and final volume of the given steel bar. (Answer: - l=1.0mm, b=0.00225, t=0.0015, = 0.0001, V=2400240mm3) PROBLEM 2:- Determine the value of Youngs modulus and Poissons ratio of a metallic bar of length 30cm, breadth 4cm and depth 4cm when the bar is subjected to an axial compressive load of 400kN. The decrease in length is given as 0.075cm and increase in breadth is 0.003cm. (Answer: - =0.3, = 1 105 /2 ) PROBLEM 3:- A steel bar 300mm long, 50mm wide and 40mm thick is subjected to a pull of 300kN in the direction of its length; Determine the change in volume. Take = 2 105 /2 , and =0.25 (Answer: - V=225mm3) PROBLEM 4:- A steel rod 5m long 30mm diameter is subjected to an axial tensile load of 50kN. Determine the change in length, diameter and volume of the rod. Take = 2 105 /2 , and Poissons ratio=0.25 (Answer: - l=1.768mm, d=0.002652, V=624.86mm3) PROBLEM 5: - A 500mm long bar has rectangular cross-section 20 40. This bar is subjected to (i) (ii) (iii) 40kN tensile force on 20 40 faces. 200kN compressive force on 20 500 faces, and 300kN tensile force on 40 500 faces.
