I had a coach in Junior High that made me feel like an all-star. Keep in mind, I was the shortest player on the basketball team. I was once introduced as the backup up guard for the second team. (There were only two teams). In three years of basketball, I scored a total of two points. That is not a misprint it was two points. The only shot I did make was in the final seconds of a game as the buzzer sounded. It was dramatic. At least to me it was. You see the game was really out of reach. There was no chance we could win. We were losing by 20 points when I made my last second shot. It was after the game that my career high score became profound. On the way to the locker room my coach stopped me and said Great shot Mike! All that extra practice paid off. I was stunned. It was only two points in a losing cause. But Coach Akers bragged on me. I still remember his words. All that extra practice paid off. How did he know about my extra practice time? Understand now, I was often the last one to be picked up at the gym after practice. When my mother wasnt working late, she was usually accompanying my sister to various other events. So I waited. Sometimes for hours. While waiting I practiced on the outdoor goals at Capitol Heights, in the dark. Somehow Coach Akers noticed that extra practice. What is the point? There are hundreds of you at Eastmont who practice secretly. I dont see you praying, or studying Gods Word, or paying someones utility bill, or making a visit, or writing an encouraging card. But I can tell you have been practicing. How? Because of the two points (or more) that appear on the scoreboard of peoples lives. Each week we average over 850 in Sunday School. These people in Sunday School find strength, hope, friends, direction and joy. Why? Because all that practice that goes on in private makes a difference at game time on Sunday. Don Hutson was a star player at the University of Alabama in the 1930s and later for the Green Bay Packers. He is called the first modern receiver and still holds numerous records. He said For every pass I ever caught in a game, I caught a thousand in practice. So to all you saints who serve in secret ways that I will never know about, I say thank you. God is honored, people are blessed and you are better. Links together make a chain. Trees together make a forest. Soldiers together make an army. Raindrops together make a river. One last quote by Christ, Let your light shine, so men may see your good works and glorify God. Ill see you Sunday,
