A cold storage is to be designed to store 500 tons of potatoes when the following data is available.

Out door conditions 35 C DBT and 28 C WBT Required indoor conditions 20 C DBT and 60% RH Water content of potatoes . 78 % Loss of water content .. 0.01% per hour People working in the cold storage 25 Fresh air supplied from outside .. 4400 m3/hr Sensible heat gain through glass . 20000 kJ/hr Sensible heat gain through walls and ceilings . 40000 kJ/hr Heat from equipment and reaction heat of potatoes . 12000 kJ/hr Infiltrated air .200 m3/hr If the air-conditioning is achieved first by cooling and dehumidification and then heating, find (a) Amount of circulated air if the recirculated air is mixed with the fresh air before entering the cooling coil. (b) The capacity of the cooling coil in tons of refrigeration and is bypass factor if DPT of the coil is 5oC (c) The capacity of the heating coil in kW Temperature of the air entering the room should not exceed 15oC.

An auditorium is to be air-conditioned for a seating capacity of 2000 for the following outdoor and comfort conditions. Outdoor design condition = 34 C DBT and 70% RH Indoor design condition = 26 C DBT and 50% RH Total sensible heat load in the auditorium = 4,80,000 kJ/hr Total latent heat load in the auditorium = 1,60,000 kJ/hr The rise in temperature of the air inside the auditorium is limited to 7 C 70% of the room air going to exhaust is recirculated and mixed with the 30% fresh air. The fan is located before all the cooling and heating apparatus and mixed air is passed through the fan. The motor capacity connected to fan is 50 kW. Assume 80% of the motor energy is given to the air passing through the fan. The required air-conditioning is achieved first by cooling and dehumidication and then by heating the air. The DPT of cooling and dehumidication coil is 12 C. Find the followings: (a) Quantity of air supplied at outdoor air-condition in m3/person/hr (b) Capacity of the refrigeration system in tons of refrigeration (c) The capacity of the heating coil in kW (d) The bypass factor of the cooling coil. Represent the processes on psychrometric chart and draw the line diagram of the components used for the system.

The following data refer to an air cooling system Sensible heat load = 120,000 kJ/hr Latent heat load = 80,000 kJ/hr Indoor design condition = 25C DBT and 55% RH Outdoor design condition = 40C DBT and 28C WBT Return air is mixed with outside air before cooling coil in the ratio of 4:1 (80% to 20%). The return air is then treated in the cooling coil whose bypass factor is 0.1 and its ADP is 10C. Then the return air is also mixed with dehumidified air coming out of cooling coil on the proportion of 4:1. Air may be required to be heated if necessary. Determine: (i) (ii) (iii) Condition of air supplied to the air conditioned system Refrigeration capacity of the coil in tons Quantity of fresh air required
