Greetings and welcome to the 2013 edition of the Pioneer Drum and Bugle Corps and Color Guard Hornline. This Hand oo! will ser"e as the dri"ing force ehind the success of our 2013 season. The contents of this oo! will e utili#ed to challenge $ou and assist in the growth and maturit$ of $our rass pla$ing. The e%ercises are designed to uild endurance& stamina& increase range& and train the ear for etter intonation. 'or $our audition& we as! that $ou plan to pla$ an$thing from within this oo!. (s the rass staff is occupied $ performers themsel"es& we understand the ner"ousness that goes along in an audition setting. )e would li!e to encourage $ou to do the "er$ est $ou can at an$ of these e%ercises including the ones $ou ma$ find difficult for $ou. )e are not *ust loo!ing for those that can handle these e%ercises ut also those that possess a desire to go after them& not gi"e up& and want to get Better +"er$ Da$. Lip Slurs
Purpose 8 -usicians will gain strength and fle%i ilit$ throughout the register of their instrument using the o"ertone series. The use of the tongue to assist in reaching the upper register will e implemented so that the em ouchure does not affect tone and air speed. (s the lip slurs ad"ance& the air speed is ad"anced to enhance the confidence and "olume of rass pla$ing. 9se a metronome and tuner to wor! on timing and pitch accurac$. +%ercises will e sung& u##ed& and pla$ed.

Tonguing
Purpose - Musicians will gain strength in tonguing and how air flow relates to its growth. Exercises progress to speed up the velocity of the tongue movement. Outcomes will include a better understanding of staccato, marcato, and tenuto styles. Air flow will be utilized to keep the tongue in constant motion. By adding pitches outside of the overtone series, the musician will gain dexterity and an awareness of pitch center through tonguing. Use a metronome and tuner to work on timing and pitch accuracy. Exercises will be sung, buzzed, and played.

Lip Flips
Purpose - Musicians will gain strength and flexibility throughout the register of their instrument using the overtone series. The use of the tongue to assist in reaching the upper register will be implemented so that the embouchure does not affect tone and air speed. As the lip slurs advance, the air speed is advanced to enhance the confidence and volume of brass playing. Use a metronome and tuner to work on timing and pitch accuracy. Exercises will be sung, buzzed, and played.

Chromatics
Purpose 8 -usicians will wor! on timing and pitch awareness through the use of a one octa"e chromatic scale. The use of slurring and "arious tonguing patterns will e implemented to wor! different needs of the ensem le. D$namics will also e incorporated to etter enhance musicalit$. 9se a metronome and tuner to wor! on timing and pitch accurac$. +%ercise will e sung& u##ed& and pla$ed

Chord Progressions
Purpose - Musicians will gain better ear training and pitch center awareness to enhance intonation. Playing through chord progressions will aid in playing through dissonance and close intervallic passages. Dynamics are implemented to gain control of air flow in p and ff playing. Control of the embouchure and air is utilized at a high level to create musical awareness. Use a tuner to work on pitch accuracy. Exercises will be sung, buzzed, and played.
