Second Sunday in Ordinary Time

A man sent by God whose name is John Bosco The month of January is very special for the whole Salesian family. On January 31st we celebrate the feast of St. John Bosco whom, Pope John Paul II gave him the title Father and Teacher of Youth. It is remarkable that John Bosco came to stand as a father to so many, for his own father passed away when he was only two year old. The words uttered then by his mother, My poor son, come with me. You no longer have a father. Though John felt the loss of his father keenly, this early misfortune did not make him an anxious or timid child. He developed a warm, deep and affectionate relationship with Mamma Margaret. She encouraged, affirmed, and guided John, who trusted her always. From his earliest years, John showed an earnest desire to do good to his friends, and he began to exercise a moral influence over them. He was drawn to gather children around himself and teach them catechism. John seemed to have realized early that young people need a gentle and affable friend. John himself often unburdened himself to his mother, who always gave an attentive ear. When John saw and experienced how unapproachable and indifferent some of the priests he came in contact with in his time, he told his mother that if he ever became a priest, he would act differently. I would look for young people and get them around me. I would want them to know that I care for them and desire their friendship. I would speak kindly to them, and give good advice and dedicate myself to their spiritual welfare. At an early age John was eager to be of help to his peers and to teach them right from wrong. This desire and zeal were abetted by a vision. He saw a multitude of very poor boys who, play and blaspheme. A Man of majestic appearance told him: With meekness and charity you will conquer these, your friends; and a Lady just as majestic added: Make yourself humble, strong and robust. At the right time you will understand everything. Jesus Christ and the Virgin Mary appeared to John in the dream, saying he would bring such youths to God through the virtues of humility and charity. The years which followed were given direction by that dream. Son and mother saw in it the indication of a way of life. It helped John to discern his calling as a priest. John's older brother Anthony opposed his plan to be a priest, and antagonized him so much that he left home to become a farm worker at age 12. After moving back home three years later, John worked in various trades and finished school in order to attend seminary. (To be continued)

(Continuar...)
