33rd Annual Meeting

The 2009 National Technical Training Symposium including the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Vibration Institute was held at the Hilton Harrisburg in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on June 23-27. About 100 persons and 25 exhibitors attended the Symposium. A Basic Machinery Vibrations training course was conducted in conjunction with the Symposium. The Symposium was initiated on Tuesday with two oneday training seminars Time Waveforn Analysis and Measurement and Analysis of Rotor Vibrations. Nelson Baxter conducted the Time Waveform course and Malcolm E. Leader, William Pryor III, and Bruce Weathersby conducted the latter course based on papers by Leader, Pryor, Weathersby, and Eshleman. The opening session on Wednesday began with a tribute to the late Professor Fred Nelson, Tufts University and Board of Directors of the Vibration Institute, by Henry Pusey. Dave Corelli, Chairman of Certification gave an update of the Vibration Institutes certification program. Kevin Guy introduced Nelson Baxter, winner of the annual Jack Frarey Memorial Award for advancements in vibration analysis. The keynote address was presented by Dr. Neville F. Rieger, Chief Scientist, STI Technologies, Inc., Board of Directors Emeritus, on the Development of Powered Machinery. Dr. Rieger developed a chronology of machinery origins and development beginning in 2450 B.C. and continuing through the 16th century. Dr. Reiger then showed how 17th century inventers started the industrial revolution and how technology continued to develop through the use of steam power in the 18th and 19th centuries. Early developments of use of electricy in the late 19th and early 20th century were covered. The first invited paper, on Integrating Reliability Center Maintenance and Condition Monitoring into the Commissioning Process, was given by Alan Pride of PMA Consulting, Inc. In the commissioning program for buildings Mr. Pride discussed failure modes and effects analysis, specification requirements, pre-functional performance testing, functional testing, documentation, training, and continued quality and reliability. The second invited speaker was Bill Branca, who spoke on the dynamic analysis of wind turbine foundations. He showed the construction of a site including assembly

along with soil testing and analysis, vibration modes, and dynamic analysis. Notable papers that are in the proceedings include Induction Motor Case Histories A Focus on Electrically Related Phenomena by Bryan Evans, Understanding Amplitude and Phase in Rotating Machinery by Dr. Edgar J. Gunter, Case Study Analysis of Two Stage Planetary Gearbox Vibration by Ken Singleton, Transient Time Analysis Techniques by Malcolm Leader, Large ID and FD Fan Systems by Frank Perricone, Handling Signal Analysis Complications by Sidney Booksh, TimeFrequency Analysis by Howard Gaberson, Centrifugal Pump Vibration Diagnostics by William Marscher, Operating Deflection Shapes by Robert Sayer, Acceptance Requirements for Equipment Reliability by Brian Biby, Journal Bearing Analysis by Ray Kelm, High Frequency Vibration Analysis by James Robinson, and Advanced Concepts in Rolling Bearing Vibration Analysis by Rene Archambault. In addition, there were workshops on How to Monitor Machinery and panel sessions on Electric Motor Testing and Wireless Technology. The technical papers can be found in the proceedings of the 33rd Annual Meeting of the Vibration Institute. ______________________________________________
