Thus, our 25th Anniversary Celebration concluded with lessons on spirituality and hope. A select gathering of corporate leaders, civil servants, academicians, professionals, diplomats and parents of students agreed to become the lively audience to listen to the epitome of compassion, the Nobel Peace Prize awardee, His Holiness The Dalai Lama. The event took place at the Jaypee Integrated Sports Complex, Greater Noida. He was presented with a bouquet of flowers and a garland of Khadi yarn as a symbol of Gandhian legacy. He then took part in lighting the lamp. There were words of welcome from Dr H Chaturvedi, Director BIMTECH, as well as from Smt Jayashree Mohta and Smt Rajashree Birla. Smt Birla said how shed felt inspired from his interviews and his writings and felt that compassion is a great inner strength, a unique way of binding oneself into the concept of universal family or Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam. Smt Jayashree Mohta and Smt Rajashree Birla quoted from several of His books and speeches.

I consider myself to be just another human being with not much difference between us. I remember it was perhaps 20 April 1959 that I reached Birla House in Mussoorie after several days of journey by train. Soon afterwards, Pandit Nehru came to see me. I met him for the first time in Peking in 1954, then again at the time of the Buddha Jayanti celebrations in 1956.
Dr. H. Chaturvedi welcomed His Holiness to Greater Noida, a part of Uttar Pradesh, which contributes to 25% of the states GDP. With His Holiness arrival, Dr. Chaturvedi observed, that the whole environment was filled with grace and peace. When His Holiness took the microphone, he felt nostalgic about his relations with the Birla family, which began with his early days in India. It was in the house of Late G. D. Birla at Mussoorie that he spent his first year in exile before moving to Dharamshala. In a brief meeting before his talk, he was presented with a framed photograph of himself with Syt B. K. Birla and Smt Sarala Birla on the veranda of Birla House in 1959.

GRAND EVENT
Its a great honour for me to have this opportunity to share my views and experiences with brothers and sisters like you, His Holiness began. I consider myself to be just another human being with not much difference between us. I remember it was perhaps 20th April 1959 that I reached the Birla House in Mussoorie after several days of journey by train. Soon afterwards, Pandit Nehru came to see me. I met him for the first time in Peking in 1954, then again at the time of the Buddha Jayanti celebrations in 1956. By then there was already trouble in Tibet and I told him I was thinking of not going back. He advised me that it would be better to go back and to try to manage the situation on the basis of the 17 point agreement. Its been nearly 55 years since I came to stay at Birla House. I lost my home and found a new one in India, a country Id always felt close to because of my studies. The Government of India took care of us. I am a refugee, but Im also the longest staying guest of the Indian government. As a result of Indias help and the freedom Ive enjoyed here, Ive learnt many things, among them the ancient Indian concept of ahimsa or non-violence offered the vote of thanks. He went on to explain that non-violence is not necessarily indicated by the quality of the action, but according to the motivation for it. He said that if we want to cheat and take advantage of someone and we smile, use sweet words and even proffer a gift, thats a form of violence because of our negative motivation. On the other hand if, out of sincere concern for others well-being, we use harsh words, because our motivation is positive, this counts as non-violence. Corruption is widespread and is quite serious here in India; along with cheating and deception, it counts as a form of violence. Peaceful, non-violent action is related to warm-heartedness, which is something we need to promote on the basis of secularism. Because India is a multi-religious society, the freedom fighters decided there should be a secular constitution. It wouldnt work to impose one religion or another, whereas secularism, from the Indian point of view, is respectful of all religions and even of the right to be agnostic. This is exemplified by the response to the ancient Charvaka or Hedonist school of thought, which challenged the spiritual approach. Nevertheless, even their teachers were referred to as rishis or sages. Ive read that of the 7 billion human beings alive today, at least 1 billion claim to be non-believers. But of the remaining 6 billion who apparently have some faith, many are fairly superficial about it. Unless you are serious and sincere about religious practice, there is a grave risk of hypocrisy. Indeed, religion can clearly be used to exploit and manipulate people, when there is a lack of moral principles. Since my first visit to Europe in 1973, I realised we need to develop a sense of global responsibility, which treats the whole of humanity as part of our concern. Nobody wants problems, but we create them. They spring directly from our self centred attitude. The opposite of this, compassion and concern for others, is the key factor in the creation of a more peaceful world. If we base our compassion on religious faith, therell be limits to it. If, instead, we take a secular approach, there are no limits to what we might achieve.

His Holiness said that we need to reflect on our common experience: our birth from our mothers and the affection with which she cared for us, it should give us the ability to be affectionate to others. From my own experience I can tell you that peace of mind is effective when it comes to our physical health. Scientists are verifying this with experiments to measure the benefits of meditating on compassion, from a secular point of view, over a period of three weeks or so. They found lower blood pressure, less stress and improved interaction with others. So, success and happiness are directly related to developing a calm mind rooted in compassion. If we pay attention to inner values, life can be happy. There will be problems, but the crucial issue is how we approach them. He was jovial throughout the session, laughing heartily and reflecting at things with both wisdom and reality. His Holiness also invited questions from the audience.

ne of the contemporary world's greatest transformational leaders, the Dalai Lama, is cast in a totally different mould. Reserved and respected by millions across the globe, he has no overt base of power, no political position, no army and no control over economic resources. Yet, he strikes a powerful and positive chord in a world riven by materialism that is divided by constant conflict and strife. However, the Dalai Lama's influence is a profound one, more so because he consistently offers the message of peace, hope and humanity. It is so true that the Dalai Lama's quite persuasion and reaching out, has drawn many to the message of Buddhism. He has made Buddhism more contemporary so much so that today, his positive perspective and teachings are part of mainstream spiritual thought. Over the last 50 years the Dalai Lama has relentlessly transmitted the message of peace, non-violence and tolerance to millions of people across the globe. At a personal, individual level also, the Dalai Lama's presence tends to rekindle and reaffirm the fact that every human being is trying to achieve peace of mind, tranquility and happiness. The journey towards these goals can be attained, in the eyes of the Dalai Lama, through pursuing what I understand as the three-fold path. First, having genuine compassion; second, minding the mind and third, being aware of the law of impermanence. I shall very briefly share these leanings with you. First, on the importance of compassion: Compassion gives us great inner strength. It is spirituality of the highest order, for it leads to positivity and contentment. It is negation of the feeling of hatred, revenge and criticism of fellow sentiments. In compassion, as the Dalai Lama says, is that unique sense of caring, which binds people into a single human family. In sum, it upholds the principals of vasudhaivakutumbakam, that the world is one family. I move on now to the second major learning which is that of 'minding the mind'. The mind can sway you; it can manipulate you. The mind can control you completely. The Dalai Lama's teachings focus on the Buddha dharma as an instrument that helps one keep the mind always in a good frame. He emphasises that we must not let storms of the heart blank out the sun in the mind. Instead, we must learn to mould our mind, never regretting the past, and taking forward its lesson into the future. In other words, beat the game of expectations by keeping your compass always on the sunny side of human nature. From this flows the third important learning which is becoming aware of the fundamental law of impermanence. This encapsulates the sequence of birth and death, and the illusory reality of worldly existence, what is referred to as maya the transitory nature of all phenomena. Nothing is forever. The lesson here is know that life is a river, so go with the flow. This is the sum of the three-fold path, which one has gleaned from the teachings of the venerated Dalai Lama. And as he points out, still, one remains a seeker; always. Smt. Rajasjhree Birla is Chairperson of the Aditya Birla Centre for Community Initiatives and Rural Development.

December 2013
IMTECHs 25th Convocation function was held in the lush green lawns of the Institute on November 1, 2013. The entire campus had a festive air with decoration of flowers, buntings and lights. The atmosphere was full of awe, nostalgia and pride. The former Finance Minister of India, Shri Yashwant Sinha was the Chief Guest. Dr. Ajit Ranade, Member of the Board of Governors of BIMTECH and Chief Economist, Aditya Birla Group and Shri Vikash Kandoi, Member of the Board of Governors of BIMTECH also graced the occasion. The convocation day, for any educational institution, is a great event in the life of the scholars, parents and guardians, faculty and all stake holders of an institution. It is a day of hope, of fulfilment and of plans for the future, Shri Vikash Kandoi, Member, Board of Governors BIMTECH said in his welcome address. Dr. Ajit Ranade enlivened the environment with quotations of Swami Vivekananda Arise, Awake and Stop Not till the Goal is reached and of Steve Jobs Stay Hungry (for success) and Stay Foolish (for miraculous achievements). His encouragement reflected in his words that the moment belonged to the Diploma awardees and the gathering was a celebration of their achievement. His wise words invoked a sense of responsibility in one and all, as he said, For turbulent uncertain times, the knowledge imparted to you by your alma mater shall act as a travellers compass and shall guide your conscience to take up challenges. Before presenting the progress report of BIMTECH for the year just concluded, Dr. H. Chaturvedi, Director of the Institute, welcomed the awardees into the alumni network of the college and observed that hereafter, the professional achievements of the awardees in the global arena will keep on making the BIMTECH family proud. In the annual report, he focused on the stress being accorded to academic excellence and in strengthening the team of faculty, research scholars and also female entrepreneurs in the dedicated program in association with ISB Hyderabad and Goldman Sachs. He mentioned the introduction of Fellow Programme in Management and Executive Fellow Programme in Management which have given the institute a strong stand in research domain. Also, in association with the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO), BIMTECH has launched a new six month Diploma course in Foreign Trade whose first batch of forty students has passed out. He proudly said Speed of action and excellent delivery are our hallmark. Addressing a lively audience of about 750 students, academicians and invited guests, Shri Yashwant Sinha, stated that the young graduates must assess the true features of the economy in order to take correct business decisions. He noted that since our country has not been able to sustain over 7% annual growth rate, theres a general sense of disappointment. He stressed that instead of consumption led growth, focus must be shifted to investment led growth since the former curbs sustainability of a high annual GDP growth rate. Also, a large part of the fiscal deficit is the revenue deficit which stems from consumption led expenditure. So a lack of investment will hurt perpetual economic growth. The delayed tapered quantitative easing by the US Federal Reserve is only a temporary factor for a healthy stock market. Supply side measures from the government will lead the path for sustainability. The chief guest concluded with giving a four point formula to the passing out students by inspiring them to perform their duties with Commitment, Courage, Ethics and Excellence. The Diplomas were awarded to students from all the five programs viz. Post Graduate Diploma in Management, PGDM in International Business, PGDM in Insurance Business Management, PGDM in Retail Management and PGDM in Sustainable Development Practices. Continuing the tradition of the BIMTECH PLEDGE, the Diploma awardees exuberantly stood up to take the oath and cheered themselves and their friends on the occasion. Deputy Director Dr. Anupam Varma expressed his vote of thanks. A dazzling display of fireworks was the apt finale for the grand event.

FOUNDATION DAY
In his welcome address, Dr. H. Chaturvedi enlightened the audience about the prestigious heritage of BIMTECH and values associated with the name Birla that each one of us has to carry forward. He explained to all that Gandhi Jayanti was chosen as our foundation day by the founders, Syt. B.K Birla and Smt. Sarala Birla, because of the deep history that the Birlas shared with Gandhiji. Gandhiji was a mentor and ideal to the Birla family and that legacy has continued till today. The Gandhian ideology is reflected in the vision and mission of BIMTECH. Socially responsible business decision making and conscious capitalism has shaped the BIMTECH brand and has led it to be perceived today as a B- School with a difference, opined Dr. Chaturvedi. The foundation day function also gave us an opportunity to celebrate several achievements on various fronts of BIMTECH. Four distinguished members of the BIMTECH fraternity, Mr. Firoz Ahamad, Senior Accountant; Mr. Y. S Aggarwal, Finance Manager; Dr. Gagan Katiyar, Assistant Professor and Dr. L. You must be the change you wish to see in the world, this was his request to all the students in the audience. He believes that the only way to achieve this is through education; the quality of education provided is shaping the minds of the youth of today who will become the change tomorrow. Speaking on achieving success and happiness, Dr. Ashwani Kumar was very firm in his thinking that there is no shortcut to success. Dr. Abha Rishi anchored the entire programme.

The first batch to be served consisted of the working staff of the college like the domestic help, security people etc., and their families. The subsequent batches had students from foreign exchange, faculty and their families all basking in the flavor of traditional India. The event was hugely successful with support and help from different conduits.
ugust 3, 2013 was a momentous day as it marked the commencement of the first academic batch of BIMTECH's new campus at Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
The former Secretary Govt. of India Dr. Prasanna Kumar Mishra, IAS (Retd.) graced the occasion as the Chief Guest. The other key dignitaries were Smt. Since then, as a family, the Birla's presence spans the whole country. Syt. B.K. Birla and Dr. Sarala Birla set up the BIMTECH, Greater Noida Campus in 1988 which started from a small room in the basement of Pushp Vihar in Delhi. This is the Silver Jubilee year of the institute and it has really grown in leaps and bounds and is placed among the top ten private B-Schools in the country. In 2009, when BIMTECH was thinking of expanding the institute, the Government of Odisha came forward and offered them the land. Smt. Jayashree Mohta thanked the Govt. Of Odisha for this gesture which showed how concerned the Government was in having good institutions in the state. Stressing that the task does not end with just the setting up of the institute; she was of the firm view that quality education be imparted to the students who come to study in Bhubaneswar and no efforts will be spared to achieve this. Harping on the fact that quality education is sine qua non for any State to have high economic progress, he lamented that despite having large number of educational institutes, there was dearth of quality institutions in the state. This was the reason why states like Odisha, West Bengal and Jharkand could not derive much benefit from the liberalization of the Indian economy. It is here that BIMTECH can play a pivotal role in the creation of quality human resource. Heaping praise on the people of Odisha, its rich culture and heritage, he thanked the Govt. of Odisha and the administration who have provided unflinching support in setting up the Institute. The chief guest of the occasion Dr.Prasanna Kumar Mishra, Former Secretary, Govt. of India, commended the promoters for establishing a sprawling institute within such short period of time. Putting the focus on meaning and role of 'Management', he remarked that it has to permeate all levels of governance. Citing the example of the 'Panchayat' which today deals with development funds of a few crores, it is imperative that we have someone such as the sarpanch with an MBA degree. This can equip them with management tools for maximizing the benefits to be accrued from utilization of the resources. Dwelling on the purpose of management education, he was of the opinion that it should be aimed at the creation of leaders, not mere managers. Leaders can be a catalyst for creation of social wealth which is crucial for a country like India. Increasing the 'Latent strength' of people should be the thrust of management training. Quoting liberally former President of India, Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, he provided the mantras as envisaged by him for being a true leader. The most important among them being 'Learn to accept failures' and 'Integrity and Humility'. Emphasizing the paramount importance of the quality of 'entrepreneurship', he urged that management institutes should inculcate it in all students. The vote of thanks was proposed by Dr. B.K. Das who thanked the chief guest for providing such a masterful analysis of management education. He also promised that every effort will be made to make BIMTECH, Bhubaneswar an institute of eminence.
fter the overwhelming success of its first batch, BIMTECH in conjunction with Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) inaugurated its second batch of Diploma in Foreign Trade on September 28, 2013. Shri Najib Shah, DG, Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (Former Chief Commissioner, New Delhi) was present in this event as the chief guest. The course of Diploma in Foreign Trade will be a great addition to the skill of participants, both in terms of entering into foreign trade as well as of curricular qualification, essentially for the students who wish to pursue a career in the field of foreign trade. The inaugural ceremony began with the lighting of lamp. Mr Ajay Sahai, Director General and CEO, FIEO in his speech mentioned that the course has been conceptualised keeping in mind the future growth of Indias foreign trade and the manpower required for it. The first batch had received an overwhelming response which encouraged BIMTECH & FIEO to launch a consecutive batch this year. Dr Anupam Varma, Deputy Director, BIMTECH in his welcome address emphasized that no business can survive without globalisation and that strategies need to be developed to ensure the same. Therefore, the course has been developed to impart structured knowledge to the participants so that they are able to use it in future as and when required, after consultation with major stakeholders, said Dr. Varma. Dr Anuj Sharma, Program Director, DFT, explained about the course in a more detailed manner. Apart from the various pedagogical and academic merits, he explained about the differentiating factors of this course on foreign trade, the most important of which
is a 3 week industry project that every participant has to undergo, at the end of which they produce a report by analysing one or more important issues of foreign trade. He also mentioned about some other features like visits to industry and a participative style of learning. With his subtle sense of humour, the Chief Guest, Shri Najib Shah said that he had a selfish interest in coming for the inaugural, as he found his potential ambassadors sitting across as participants who would be doing businesses in the manner it should be done. He laid great stress on doing business in ethical manner to avoid bad name for the individual as well as for the country. He advised all present to take extra care of quality of the product as there is no substitute for the same. He reminded that a good quality product sells in India as well as abroad. He also stressed that all should take advantage of the course as doing business in India is difficult and it only gets more difficult doing business outside India. Mr Ajay Sahai delivered the vote of thanks to the honourable guest present. The event was anchored by Shri Ashish Jain, Director, FIEO. The success of the inauguration ceremony has set the ground for an eventful and rewarding forthcoming six months. OPINION
December 2013
He counted oil imports, gold imports, poor infrastructure, high inflation, slow growth of core sectors to be the main reasons for the economic crisis. Apart from the above mentioned issues, depreciation of rupee and the consumptionsaving patterns of Indians were also discussed. There are four ways of obtaining dollar, as he mentioned: Exports, Borrowings, Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) and Foreign Institutional Investment(FII), and Exporting manpower. Another interesting aspect is that the total amount of foreign currency we earn is approximately the same as the amount we pay for our purchases. With respect to oil imports, he mentioned that though we import a lot of crude oil, our oil refineries at Numaligarh, Guwahati and Barauni enable us to export refined petroleum and earn foreign exchange. Foreign exchange reserves are important as they are indicative of the financial strength of a country and at present, we have reserves that would last for only seven months. Citing the Indians emotional attachment and sense of security with gold, he quoted that their was a huge consumption of the metal in the first quarter of 2013-14, when there was a dip in international gold prices. He concluded that the prime focus now should be on controlling inflation and then boosting growth which will in turn lead to a sustainably growing economy. The experience was enriching and stimulated the economist in all students. When interviewed by the Team Vritant, he candidly answered all questions. The excerpt is below: Q. A few days ago, youd tweeted Half the countrys assets are now being managed by women. What is your take on women heading banks? Dr. Ranade: Its a remarkable change! A few days ago, in a lighter vein, Christine Lagarde, the Managing Director of the IMF had said, that if women were incharge of the Wall Street and if Lehman Borthers were to be Lehman Sisters instead, there would have never been such a big financial crisis! What I think she hinted at was, that amid the herd mentality of the Wall Street of reckless risktaking, women could bring in a new perspective, which would be beneficial for the system. Im proud that despite being a developing country in the financial sector, India is getting more women as Bank CEOs. Q. Youve been an educator. What is your advice for students on pursuing their career? Dr. Ranade: Thats a hard question to answer. For youngsters:50-60% of the problem is of figuring out what to do in life? One must spend time alone, not with friends or family or teachers, try to analyse ones strengths, weaknesses, inherent inclinations and aptitude and then find their passion. Once they discover what they have to do, they must just do it. If they dont find it, try doing something approximate, if not exactly similar to what youd want to do. Q. Our Marketing faculty say that the Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities are growing rapidly, while the Economics faculty paint a dull picture of the economy. Why that paradox? Dr. Ranade: This paradox exists! However, the aggregate spending in rural areas is higher than in urban areas. Many Tier-2 and 3 cities are growing fast but just the growth rate isnt just enough for everyone. Thats why the dull picture! The fact that Indian economy has almost doubled in the past seven years, but the amount of GDP growth is still same, has led to an apparent fallen rate of GDP growth. Evidently, opportunities are huge and more number of areas are demanding growth now. Q. How can students realize their dream of pursuing entrepreneurship early in their career? Dr. Ranade: They must take the route of Business Incubators within their colleges, experiment and whenever they feel strong enough to go on their own, they can move out of their institutions. However, there are routes of Intraprenership within large organizations where these opportunities can be availed. Students must take steps and have some guts. Sky is the limit! VRITANT TEAM

Thereafter, all members of the Round Table put forth their views on the bill and pointed out implementation issues from their perspective. The discussion began with Dr. Bimal Arora, who said that a great opportunity lay ahead for the civil society organisations with the implementation of the Bill and the question that emerged was if the organisations were prepared to work to the expected scale that it required. Furthering this, Dr. K K Upadhyay elaborated upon the expectations from the civil society organisations to join hands with the corporate sector in executing the various provisions under the CSR clause. Mr Mukesh Gulati highlighted the need for investment in community development through CSR, while Ms. Pushpa Sundar delved upon issues such as CSR prescriptions and guidelines to include corporate governance, extending the Act to the MSMEs and capacity building of the civil society organisations to handle CSR projects. Mr. Neeraj Kapoor said that rules are often cumbersome and should be made simple. He suggested that projects on environment should also be listed as CSR activity under Schedule VII of the Companies Act, 2013. Mr. Umesh Asaikar tabled the opinion that profit was the main motivation for business and hence tax benefits could be considered for organisations spending on CSR. He also questioned the presence of AIDS only as a CSR health initiative under Schedule VII and not of other diseases which are prevalent in the country. Ms. UVL Ananda in her presentation welcomed the bill and said that CSR should be in the DNA of every organisation. She cited the example of Bayer's Child Care Program and Model Village Project which had created positive impact in the society and benefitted the business at the same time. After the Round Table discussions, the participating guests posed their questions to Dr. Chatterjee as well as to other Round Table members. "The timing and the focus of the Round Table is very opportune and topical and it is very welcome" remarked one of the guests Ms. Sangeeta Robinson, Founder & CEO, Enduring Value Advisory & Practice LLP at the end of the discussions. Her views were echoed by many other participants. Dr Anupam Varma, Deputy Director BIMTECH presented the vote of thanks while members from the BIMTECH faculty presented mementoes to the Round Table members as token of the Institute's respect and appreciation for them.

r. Ajit Ranade, the Chief Economic Advisor of Aditya Birla Group and Member, Board of Governors of BIMTECH addressed the students on CURRENT ECONOMIC CRISIS IN INDIA: WAY FORWARD on 30 September 2013. In the event of recent recurrent depreciation of Rupee vis--vis Dollar and prevailing macroeconomic conditions, the talk by Dr. Ranade turned out to be pearls of wisdom for students. Dr. Ranade has been at the heart of economic matters during his professional life. With his knowledge and experience, it could have been expected of him to deliver a lecture to young students. However, he chose the session to be conducted as a two way interaction. Enthusiastic students didnt miss the opportunity. Beginning with a true picture of the current Indian economy, he continued how in 2006, India became a trillion dollar economy and in seven years since then, is set to get doubled. In 2006, the growth rate was 9% vis-vis approx 5% in 2013, but since we are doing better than nations in the west and other developing countries, we have hope for the future.
,,
For the youth of the country, we are opening a whole new vibrant profession because the act will bring CSR from the back room to the board room. Now people envision, If I am a CSR professional, I will sit in the CSR committee, on the board, that is the aspiration of the young CSR professional. We have opened a new avenue!

DISCUSSIONS
contributed in policy making at independent level but had surmountable presence amongst citizens, which is not a common happening now. He added that, in such circumstances it is more pertinent to develop Think Tanks in India provided it doesnt lead to groupism. Shri Padhi identified the contextual definition, structural issues, funding and research influence of Think Tanks as some of the major issues. He added that policy formation is also highly centralized, dictated by the concerns of political agenda and specific to the manifesto of the political parties, so it leaves very less space for Think Tanks in India. Shri Jagdananda differentiated between NGOs and Think Tanks and raised issues of credibility of the organisations. He commented that although there has been a mixed view on the governments financial support, it is evident from past occurrences that the government mechanism is not bias free and builds up systemic pressure if it funds research for a particular agenda related to policy.
December 2013
The absence of definite policy making mechanism was highlighted in the discussion. The critical instances of Nuclear Policy, Foreign Diplomacy Policy, Reservation Policy, Education Policy, Environmental issues, and Economic Policies were offered as examples during the discussion which should be attended by the Think Tanks as they need very deep engagement for citizen dialogue. Presenting examples of MNAREGA, NRHM, Adhar Card Programme etc, Shri Ray opined that it is vital to study the high impact policies properly and in different settings given the diversity of our country. The strength of research, analysis and expertise will help policymakers understand the possible positive and negative outcomes in society. IPF President Dr Kapil Kapoor appreciated all the members for their honest opinions and the fruitful discussion and presented the commitment of IPF for more discussions and research based reports on the Role of Think Tanks in India. Hon Director Prof. Sinha mentioned that more such debates will collect broad views from different parts of the country, generate some honest thought processes and opinions from the stakeholders of Think Tanks and Policy making. All the members lauded the initiative by IPF and BIMTECH and underlined the need of such research specially when there has not been any such debate in such a diverse group for a long time in the country.

CENTRE FOR MANAGEMENT DEVELOPMENT ADDS NEW CLIENTS IN THE YEAR 2013
MDP
SEMINAR WITH DR. JAGDISH SHETH
Dr. Jagdish Sheth, Founder, Academy of Indian Marketing and Charles H Kelldstat Professor of Marketing, Emory University interacted with faculty and research scholars in a seminar held on October 12, 2013. Initiating the discussion, he emphasized that the faculty need to be well rounded doing various academic activities like research, teaching, training and academic administration. While he said that the best way to learn is to teach, he was very emphatic that creating knowledge is the primary job of a faculty. He also admonished that the faculty should not be looking to the industry with disdain nor the people from industry who come to management institute should undermine the academician. He painted the scenario of business education in 21 century which is very stressful in USA where Wharton has announced 1 year free online course for MBA aspirants. He surmised that a similar situation may be faced in India in future and therefore management institutions cannot depend on fees alone. They need to aggressively generate revenue through training and research grants. In a question relating to retail raised by a research scholar, he cautioned that it is too early to say that retail has failed in India. He acknowledged that in Indian society the traditional retailing is well entrenched but a call centre couple will not go to traditional Indian retail outlet. He advised that marketing faculty should not get into the trap of modeling supported by econometrics for marketing research and by experiments for consumer behavior adopted by psychologists. He opined that marketing should be studied and taught in a holistic manner and a researcher needs to have a very wide base of knowledge before getting into the depth of his/her thesis. In research, relevance should have priority over rigour, he advised. While knowledge of higher statistics or mathematics is helpful, it is not necessary for doing a relevant research. The method needs to be enabled in the problem he is investigating. The method to be adopted should be selected based on the problem selected for investigation and the research question framed. The supremacy of positivist has long been over; the researcher can take either of the route - qualitative or quantitative suiting his investigation. He also gave tips for publishing and delved in detail on programmatic research through which a faculty can create personal branding. Further, he emphasized the need for knowledge of history describing how he cherished the study of history that also helps him in his research. Winding up the discussion, he talked about the website researchGate which is a social networking site for scientists and researchers and exhorted the researchers to visit the site and get research paper of their research interest.

Every weekend, I am taken back to my college days, away from the daily rut of difficult deadlines, even more difficult targets and bosses who always seem to be at loggerheads with me. The weekends come as a big relief, though I have a backpack heavy with my books and laptop, the mind doesn't feel burdened at all. There is always something new waiting to be learnt from fellow scholars and teachers in every session. Before I decided to give the entrance examination for EFPM at BIMTECH, I inquired with academicians about the reputation of BIMTECH. The consensus was, If you want a degree, there are easier options but if you want learning, opt for BIMTECH. My experience so far corroborates those views. BIMTECH has helped reignite my desire to learn, undertake research and once again become a student of management. When I started my weekend classes, I expected a deserted campus to greet me. But I was surprised to find a busy, vibrant environment with young students, busy scholars, and teachers. I felt as if in their silent communication, they were connecting with me and giving me an assurance that I am at the right place. So far we haven't been pushed to our limits by the teachers; rather the focus is on getting our concepts clear so that we can understand the nuances of research. Because the teachers are not sitting on their past laurels and even after several achievements talk about doing new work, they are the role models for those like us who have joined the course after several years of work experience. I am sure my years at BIMTECH campus will reinvigorate new desires, new abilities and new aspirations, which will make me a seeker once again; and this time for life!

Putting the debating skills of the new batch to test, Majlis - The Debate & Theatre Society of BIMTECH conducted The Great Debate 2013. Majlis has been holding this event, exclusively for the first year students, for 5 years in a row and organised it as its first event of the year 2013-14. From more than 100 candidates, only fourteen made it through to the final round. The topic was then announced, and the finalists started gearing up for the day when they would be going up on stage and fighting it out. India's demographic dividend not paying off: Indian youth to blame was the topic of the debate. The topic was understandably not among the common ones the fresh CAT takers were familiar with. This gave the contestants a sample of what they could expect to be talking about in B schools and in the future. July 22, 2013, the day of the debate finally arrived and Prof. Dhruva Chak and Dr. Parameswar Nayak, senior members of the faculty at BIMTECH cordially agreed to judge the event. Every participant gave it his / her best in the first round and only eight finalists passed the elimination. Further, they were subjected to the scrutiny of each of the other finalists, the judges and the audience. The points discussed made one think deeply about the importance of India's favourable demographic not paying off dividend and steps to tackle the issue. Aabhar Gilhotra and Aman Sachdev the charming hosts of the event, kept the audience engaged with their quick thinking and witticisms. With an efficient organisation from Team Majlis, the event smoothly wrapped up with two winners for each side of the topic, namely Sumit Rekhi & Abhinav Bajpai claiming winners' prizes while Nandini Bansal and Hrishikesh N winning the runners-up.
