Introduction Soundarya Lahari, meaning waves of beauty, consists of two parts viz Ananda Lahari, meaning waves of happiness !first "# stanzas$ and Soundarya Lahari !the ne%t &' stanzas$ It is be(ieved that Lord )anesha himse(f has etched the Ananda Lahari on *ount *eru !Some peop(e be(ieve that Sage +ushpa ,hantha did the etching$ It was read from there by Sage )ouda +ada who taught it to Adhi Sankara Adhi Sankara himse(f added the rest of the &' stanzas and comp(eted it -hese #.. stanzas are supposed to be the foremost among *anthra (iterature It is a(so be(ieved that by *aking suitab(e /anthras and reciting particu(ar stanzas and worshipping the yantras a(most anything can be obtained in the wor(d -here are more than 01 commentries to Soundarya Lahari written in Sanskrit itse(f 2f them the most famous is that written by Lakshmi ,hara a(ias La((a,3is commentary is used to understand the meaning of the different verses -hough there are (arge number of trans(ations and commentaries of Soundraya Lahari avai(ab(e, this is perhaps the first time an attempt is made by a mere novice to trans(ate them into 4ng(ish verse -he aim is to bring to the notice of the devotees who know 4ng(ish better than other (anguages, the ma5esty of the medium of worship ca((ed Soundarya Lahari A trans(iteration in roman script is a(so given *ay a(( those who read this be drenched forever by this 67ave of happiness8 +art I 9 Ananda Lahari !-he waves of happiness$: # Shivah shakthya yukto yadi bhavati shaktah prabhavitum ;a chedevam devo na kha(u kusa(ah spanditumapi< Atas tvam aradhyam 3ari93ara9=irinchadibhir api +ranantum stotum vaa katham akrta9punyah prabhavati Lord Shiva, on(y becomes ab(e -o do creation in this wor(d a(ong with Shakthi 7ithout her, 4ven an inch he cannot move, And so how can, one who does not do good deeds, 2r one who does not sing your praise, Become ade>uate to worship you 2h , goddess mine, 7ho is worshipped by the trinity ? !Attracting a(( the wor(d$ @ -aniyamsam pamsum tava carana9pankeruha9bhavam
