INTERVIEW

CASE STUDY

Read carefully through this outline of the problem, making sure that you understands it. Conditions are bad for the workers at the Spic and Span factory, which produces washing liquids, detergents and soap for different ends. The hours are long, the work is monotonous, the pay is low and the general safety of the working environment (e.g. ventilation, protective clothing, and lighting) is inadequate. Although most of the workers are members of the trade union, many are reluctant to go on strike as they fear being laid off in these times of unemployment. Today, however, one of the workers has jammed her hand in a faulty packing machine. This is the third time this has happened; in the first accident a worker lost one of his fingers. Now the shop steward has called a lunch-time meeting to discuss the problem and to decide whether or not to call a strike. THR CHARACTERS Here are the characters. After reading through the description of each of them, look at the talking balloons. Can you try to imagine that you are that person? What do you think the situation is? Suggest what he/she may be saying. Listen to the ideas of the other students in your class and then offer your suggestion on how best to complete each balloon.

Its about time

The shop steward The shop steward thinks that the workers ought to strike for 24 hours. However, it is his/her job to listen, advise and draw up a log of claims or Complaints Worker 1 He/ she has a large family (five children) where the spouse does not work. There are the usual financial commitments (rent, car, furniture on hire purchase and day-to-day expenses). He/she cannot afford a day off to go on strike. Worker 2 He/she is single and has only been working at the factory for three weeks, having been unemployed before for six months. He/she is angry about the lack of safety precautions and the bad medical facilities. Worker 3 Being young and married, he/she is thinking of leaving the company next month for a job with better wages and prospects. He/she maintains that the jobs at spic and span are very boring and repetitive, and suggests that there should be some attempt to vary the routine-e.g.

I cant afford to.

As far as Im concerned.

Itd be A good idea to.

by more frequent changes of duty and a break every hour. Otherwise the workers will suffer nervous breakdowns. I can remember Worker 4 He/she has been working at the factory for 25 years and is retiring soon. He/she has been a member of the union for 17 years but is generally resistant to the idea of strikes, remembering that when they last went on strike seven workers were laid off as a result! He/she also feels that many accidents occur because of the laziness of workers in using the protective garments provided.

THE DISCUSSION After completing each of the talking balloons you will now be assigned one of the roles. Assemble into your discussion groups and, by discussing the problem, try to work out a way to solve it. Remember that your group is going to be asked afterwards to give an account of the outcome of your discussion. You may like to elect a group representative for this task before you begin.

5.3 Read carefully through this outline of a problem, making sure that you understand it There are moves to erect a huge shopping complex in what is, at present, a recreation and sports area. Many people view this plan as a threat to the environment but others regard it as a welcome community development. So a special meeting of the local Council has been called to help the local M. P. prepare a speech to parliament on whether or not the project should be given the go -ahead. THE CHARACTERS Here are the characters. After reading through the description of each of them, look at the talking balloons. Can you try to imagine that you are that person? What do you think the situation is? Suggest what he/she may be saying. Listen to the ideas of the other students in your class and then offer your suggestion on how best to complete each balloon. We are here to decide Local Member of parliament : Mr. Macpherson He is a middle-aged man, married with grown-up children. He is a friend of Mr. Penny, the businessman, and supports the proposal. However, he also wants to please the people in the area.

We wish there were Two teachers : Mr. and Mrs. Sutcliffe They have no children of their own yet and have just bough a house in the towns inner suburbs. They plan to live there permanently and they are very keen on community development.

Mrs. Keen wishes there were more sporting facilities in the area and has heard that the proposed complex could include a gym with squash courts. I really cant Agree with.. Pensioner : Miss Penrose Although retired, she is active . She dislikes any sort of change and thinks back to the good old days of 50 years ago when the town was a mere village of 75 people! She owns a small shop across the main road. Businessman : Mr. Penny He owns a chain of very successful supermarkets throughout the country. He will have the opportunity of opening another one in the new shopping complex in the town. He is a friend of Mr. Macpherson, the local M.P. Mr. penny lives in the outer suburbs, is divorced and has no children.

Cant you see that.?

From the point of View of.?

Journalist : Mr. Storey He is very interested in environmental issues and used to be a member of Friends of the Earth. He is extremely ambitious about his own career and has just started work on the local newspaper. He is not married.

Im very worried about Housewife : Mrs. Hughes She lives with her husband and three young children in the inner suburbs of the town. She has had many arguments with Mr. Macpherson about the need for a child-minding centre in the area. She has heard a rumour that one may be opened in the new complex. However, she is very worried about the childrens safety as well as Where they will play if a shopping complex is built. She does not drive. THE DISCUSSION After completing each of the talking balloons you will now be assigned one of the roles. Assemble into your discussion groups and let the meeting begin. By discussing the problem, try to work out a way to solve it. Remember that your group is going to be asked afterwards to give an account of the outcome of your discussion. You may like to elect a group representative for this task before you begin. 6.3 Read carefully through this outline of the problem, making sure that you understand it. Woodville School has a principal called Taylor. Unlike the previous principal, who was very traditional, Taylor is young and wants to change a lot of things. Taylor calls a parent/teacher meeting to put

forward his/her ideas and to decide on the new school policies. At the meeting, the parents and teachers must collectively decide which proposals should be accepted and which rejected. Have you Any suggestions for? The principal : Mr./Ms Taylor The principal has progressive attitudes towards education and wants to abolish uniforms, homework, examinations, corporal punishment and compulsory sport at the school! He/she also wants to abolish Latin and introduce more relevant subjects such as Current Affairs and Consumerism. He/she will ask for more suggestions along these lines at the meeting.

I think its The Humanities teacher : Mr./Ms Smith Going (a bit) too far to. He/she teaches English, History and Latin and thinks that the new principal is too radical. He/she agrees that uniforms, corporal punishment and compulsory sport should be abolished-but thinks that homework and examinations should be maintained, especially as the students have to sit for public external examinations in order to get into higher institutions and apprenticeships. Wouldnt it be a good idea to? The science teacher : Mr./Ms Bell He/she supports some of the principals ideas about education but thinks that a moderate amount of homework would be given. Also, in order to prevent competitiveness among the students, a cheap and simple uniform should be kept. Bell used to teach Domestic Science/Carpentry before coming to Woodville School and would like to see the introduction of these kinds of subjects.

I strongly disagree with Parent 1 : Mr./Ms Baxter He/she has more traditional ideas about education, supports the continued teaching of Latin as a valuable mental discipline, and is generally suspicious of the principals progressive ideas. Mr./Ms Baxter will consider moving his/her child to a different school if the principals proposals are agreed to at the parent/teacher meeting. As far as Im concerned Parent 2 : Mr./Ms Logan He/she has moderate or liberal ideas about education but is very much against the introduction of fashionable subjects such as Consumerism, into the school syllabus.

Why should they .?

Parent 3 : Mr./Ms Harris He/she has very progressive ideas about education and thinks that the older pupils (15-17-years-old ) should only spend two or three days at school each week- the rest of their time being spent outside in the community!

THE DISCUSSION After completing each of the talking balloons you will now be assigned one of the roles. Assemble into your discussion groups and, by discussing the problem, try to work out a way to solve it. Remember that your group is going to be asked afterwards to give an account of the outcome of the meeting. You may like to elect a group representative for this before you begin. 7.3 Read carefully through this outline of the problem, making sure that you understand it. Helen has just received a phone call at work from Maria, her sister-in-law, who breaks the news that Helen has just won the first prize of 30,000 in the lottery. Maria had given this lottery ticket to Helen for her birthday last week and is very anxious to find out whether Helen is going to share it! The difficulty is to decide exactly how the money should be allocated! They all meet to discuses the problem. You mean Ive(really)? Helen She is newly married to Greg and they have just taken out a 25-year mortgage on a new house. Having now won the lottery, she would like to use the prize money to pay off the mortgage-but then there would be little left over for other things or for other people! She works as a legal secretary.

Now I can

Greg The brother of Maria and newly married to Helen. He has always wanted to be a racing-car driver and would now like to buy a fast sports car! He would also like to study for an extra qualification to get a better job.

I there Maria Any chance of.? Gregs younger sister. Like Helen, Maria is also a secretary-but as far as her job is concerned she feels as though she is in a rut. She wants to go abroad, she wants to buy new clothes, and she wants to put a deposit on a flat in the city. As it was she who had given the winning lottery ticket to Helen, Maria

really hopes that her sister-in-law will share the windfall on a 50-50 basis with her. If theres one thing Id like to do, its. Parent of Helen having lost his/her spouse in a car accident two years ago, he/she would like to visit Sweden where he/she was born and brought up. His/her old mother is still there living in an old folks home.

Wouldnt it be nice if? Parent of Grey and Maria There are four other children in the family who are still of school age. Both parents have to work to support the younger children and also to support a grandparent who is in a private old folks home. If the house were bigger the grandparent could live with the family.
