the country migrate to Zilker Park
for what is known as ACL. Histori-
cally a three-day experience, this
year marks the rst time the festival
will span two weekends, Oct. 46
and 1113. A sold-out event since
2004, an estimated 70,000 ock
to catch as many of the 130 bands
featured on eight stages as pos-
sible, while lling up on dishes and
drinks from a bevy of local vendors.

Top 5 Tips for ACL
Festival
1
Download the free mobile app. Your
virtual guide to the weekend, the ACL
app lets you create a custom schedule and
share it with friends, learn about artists,
showcase Instagram photos, interact with
the Festival Map, stream ACL radio and
much more.
2
Plan your meals like you plan your
bands. Head to aclfestival.com and
check out the list of food vendors and
menus. This isnt your normal festival fare,
with many of Austins iconic restaurants
serving up a taste of the city. My personal
favorite is the Love Burger from The Love
Shack, by Chef Tim Love.
3
Amp up your Karma at ACL Cares. You
may be feeling guilty about skipping
work on Friday, or eating your third helping
of trufe mac and cheese, but you can earn
karma points and help important causes at
ACL Cares.
4
If youre looking for a more luxe fes-
tival experience, the VIP Grove is your
respite from the sun and crowds. Shaded
by old pecan trees, the VIP Grove offers an
all-inclusive experience with catered food
throughout the weekend, adult beverages,
mini-spa treatments and air-conditioned
restrooms.
5
Join our Email List for the 4-1-1 on
Passes. Due to the demand for tickets,
the festival will take place over two week-
ends in 2013. More music-lovers will be able
to attend the festival now, but to make sure
you have a place in the park, join our e-list
to stay on top of it all. (aclfestival.com)
In Austin, our nationally celebrated
festival circuit is a feast for the
senses. A fan-favored urry of sights,
sounds, tastes and tunes that keep us
adding ticket stubs, well-worn wristbands and
commemorative lanyards to our memory boxes year
after year. Wont you come fest with the rest of us?

LIVE MUSIC 101
Austins celebrated live music scene inevitably continues to
change, and likewise stays the same. As venues come and go,
two key factors remain stable: an astonishing number of live music
venues (around 250 at last count!) represent every style and genre.
The scene keeps adapting.
The Broken Spoke,
Continental Club and
Antones are widely
considered the towns top
three venues. The Spoke, a
classic country dancehall
getting hemmed in by
residential development,
still books mostly-local
acts (Alvin Crow, Cornell
Hurd Band, Jesse Dayton) who can keep the dazzling
boot-scooters circling the oor. The Continental Club still
favors rootsy American music from both touring and local
acts; among the latter, look for twangy country from Redd
Volkaert, blues from the Blues Specialists, or rock from
singer-songwriters like James McMurtry as well as bands
like White Ghost Shivers. But music lovers know that the
sounds are more intimate in the tiny, upstairs Continental
Gallery. Antones, meanwhile, recently vacated downtown for
parking-friendly East Riverside Drive, and the internationally
celebrated venue vows to continue emphasizing what few
blues artists remain, including locals Miss Lavelle White,
Marcia Ball and Jimmie Vaughan.
Rooms like the eclectic Saxon Pub hold their own. The Saxon
offers mostly regional acts, including favorite son rocker
Bob Schneider with his
various bands. Plus, the
Resentments, the informal Americana group born there
via Sunday jams and still going strong, albeit with completely
different personnel, more than a decade later. Other old
standbysacoustic listening room Cactus Caf, world music
stronghold Flamingo Cantina, jazz club the Elephant Room,
country hole-in-the-wall Ginnys Little Longhorn and Asleep at
the Wheel leader Ray Bensons spacious Rattle Inn and Red
River Street rock bastions like the cutting-edge Mohawk
also thrive.
But so do the still-young and mostly-free East Side clubs just
across IH-35 from the traditional, downtown Sixth Street
entertainment stretch. The biggest buzz is for the
White Horse, another dance-happy honky tonk
featuring country and Tex-Mex conjunto. Hotel
Vegas and Gypsy Lounge, where the
rockin gets hard and heavy, are both nearby.
Still, the downtown Austin City Limits Live at
the Moody Theater, a luxurious, mid-sized
venue with state-of-the-art sound and
lighting and nary a bad seat, is the
towns crown jewel. Yes, the award-
winning TV show is recorded there, but
otherwise the Moody hosts public
concerts by local and touring acts
in every genre imaginable.

AUSTIN
MUSIC
VETERAN
Nancy Coplin served
four years as the Austin Music Com-
missions rst chair. Shes currently
music coordinator at Austin-
Bergstrom International Airport
With so much live music in
town, why more at the airport?
The airports the front door to Austin.
Visitors are often here so briey they
dont get to visit clubs, but they can
experience good music at Bergstrom.
We have six venues there, with 19
shows weekly. Some travelers actually
plan their trips around when airport
music takes place.
For those with time, what
clubs do you consider
quintessential?
Antones, Saxon Pub and the Conti-
nental are my benchmarks for Austin
music. But theres a whole new scene
on the East Sidelots of young
people, who like to dance.
Cant choose one. There
are too many good l ive
music venues in Austi n.

10 // AROUND TOWN
AROUND TOWN
Things to do, places to eat and music to listen to in
Austins most vibrant neighborhoods
BY LAUREN MODERY & AMY GABRIEL
Over the past 10 years, Austin has not only landed
on numerous best of lists, but it also frequently
nds itself in the top spots. Best place to see live
music (Travel+Leisure), best city for golf (Golf
Digest), best shopping (Lucky Magazine), best
top chef (Bravo), best bar (Esquire) you name
it. The truth is, Austin and its inhabitants have
always been on the cutting edge. And now the rest of
the country is catching on.
We promise: Youll feel the infectious energy. Austin
prides itself on being forward and open-minded, wel-
coming diversity and progress without ever losing its
character. Whether its experiencing the independent
spirit of the businesses on South Congress Avenue,
watching the bustle of Sixth Street or taking in the
galleries and cafes of blossoming East Austin, before
you know it, you may nd yourself dreaming of having
a 787 zipcode.
GETTING TO AND AROUND AUSTIN
GETTING TO AUSTIN
Austin-Bergstrom International Airport
Named the Best Domestic Airport in the U.S. by the
Airports Council International, ABIA offers nonstop
service to nearly 40 destinations domestically and in
Mexico. It is easily accessible from anywhere in the
country and offers more than 268 commercial pas-
senger ights per day. Live music greets travelers on
arrival and is a constant companion as they continue
into the city. Downtown Austin is 1520 minutes from
the airport via SuperShuttle van service for about
$13, Capital Metro Airport Flyer for $1 and taxi for
about $30.
Amtrak
The Texas Eagle Line offers service from
Chicago and arrives at the Austin Amtrak
station on Lamar Boulevard.
Greyhound Bus
Daily routes drop passengers off at the Grey-
hound station on IH-35 near Highland Mall.
By Car
Austin is about 1.5 hours from San Antonio
and 3 hours from Dallas/Fort Worth and Houston.
AROUND TOWN
Austin has a walkable downtown core, with some
6,500 downtown hotel rooms within a short stroll of
entertainment districts. A pedicab ride is a popular
alternative, and Capital Metro operates more than 80
bus routes around town. Taxis, charters and minibus
rentals are also available.
MetroRail
MetroRail connects the city of Leander to
downtown Austin, with service six days a
week, including service until midnight on Friday and
Saturday nights. There are 9 stations on the 32-mile
line, and tickets can be bought at each station.
Fares cost between $1 and $2.75 per trip, depending
on trip length. The Downtown S station sits on the
north end of the Convention Center at Fourth Street
between Neches and Trinity, next to the Hilton hotel.
Visit capmetro.org for details.
Rent a Bike
Bike lanes and paths lace the city. Austin
has a number of bike shops offering hourly and day
rentals. Some, like Barton Springs Bike Rental, also
have childrens bikes and trailers, and offer a variety
of bike tours. Area maps and suggested routes can
be downloaded from bicycleaustin.info.
By Foot
Pedestrians can easily hoof it around town.
Attractions, including Sixth Street, the Ware-
house District and Lady Bird Lake, are within a 5- to
10-minute walk from many downtown hotels.
Pedicab
There are a few different Austin compa-
nies that operate pedicabscarts pulled by cyclists.
All drivers are licensed by the City of Austin Ground
Transportation Department and work solely on tips,
so be generous!

Q: What are the key wardrobe staples for both
a man and a woman to illustrate Austin style
and t in while here?
A: Both men and women would benet from a good pair
of denim, but when the heat hits women nd themselves
in maxi dresses and men wear shorts with their favorite
t-shirt line. Also, cotton can be your best friend in
the heat.
Q: Many of our local shops are getting
national recognition. What do you think
contributes to the reason fashion front-
runners are now casting an interested eye
on our citys culture?
A: We have fashion gems here in Austin and being such
a tourist hotspot, it was only a matter of time before the
secret got out. Storeowners buy exclusive brands and
Austin shoppers support local design.
Q: Which food truck chef has the best
aesthetic style?
A: The city loves Paul Qui of East Side King. Hes got a
great sense of style and insanely delicious food.

Q: Dinner?

Q: If you could use one cooking ingredient to
best describe the south Austin foodie scene,
what would that ingredient be and why?
A: Avocado; there are so many Mexican places.
Q: What niche does
La Patisserie ll in
terms of the local
food scene?
A: We use local
ingredients where
ever possible, which
as a bakery is pretty
tricky. Our ambiance
makes us stand out
from the rest of the
places in south
Austin, and our
selection is unlike
any other in the
area. We have people who have been
coming since the day we opened still coming to us, which
is an awesome feeling. I think my favorite thing is when
people say our macarons are on par with those they have
eaten in Paris.

with local art, all while
preserving the sanctity

EAST AUSTIN
the snapshot
A cultural melting pot that has recently
become a moth-to-a-ame main at-
traction for the hipster contingent, in
this part of town you never know which
non-descript warehouse is actually an
art gallery and performance center,
urban farms take up a full city block
and restaurateurs romance you with
extras like petanque courts for
pre-seating idle time.
Locals speak
5 minutes with Megan Crigger,
Cultural Arts Program Manager
Cultural Arts Division, Economic Growth & Redevelopment
Services Ofce, City of Austin
Q: What do you admire most about Austins
growing arts scene?
A: Austin artists seem to have a unique approach of
engaging the public in the most surprising ways, whether
its utilizing space in new ways, such as popup galleries,
or using the cityscape as the backdrop to their creations.
The Austin art scene is spontaneous, temporal and
unafraid.
Q: If a rst-timer comes to Austin and wants
a taste of the arts and culture climate here,
where are the top places youd take them?
A: I would probably introduce my rst-timer to the Off
Center for new works theater by Rude Mechs, or Salvage
Vanguard Theater to see a production by Teatro Vivo,
Glass Half Full Theatre, or another local theater troupe.
The visual works exhibited by any of the galleries in the
ArtAustin collaborative (inthegalleries.com), such as
Women and Their Work or grayDUCK is always fresh and
of stellar quality, not to mention a great place to pick up
a local souvenir of Austin. The Peoples Gallery located at
City Hall showcases over 150 works of art by local and
regional artists.
Q: Is there anything that you can tip our read-
ers off to that would work as a most locals
dont know this tidbit?
A: The popup gallery, temporary spaces set in Austins
unique and historical architectural structures in down-
town and the surrounding neighborhoods, is where you
can nd the scene. Check out Canope, a new creative
community set within a rehabilitated warehouse with
artist studios, galleries, and a caf, or visit East Austin
Trailer Park and Eatery (E.A.T.) and Starving Art Complex,
complete with delicious and artistic foods, artist studios
and a drive in movie theater.
Q: In a ip-op-friendly culture like Austin, do
you think those outside our city limits tend to
assume we dont have a super evolved artistic
palate?
A: On the contrary...the entrepreneurial spirit is thriving
in Austin, with innovations in culinary, theater, fashion
and visual arts hitting
the national scene. As
a university town with a
landscape conducive to
cool outdoor activities,
the innovative thinkers
and young spirits are
ocking to Austin and
bringing fresh
perspectives that
contribute to this
thriving cultural scene.

5 Minutes with Akina Adderley
Front woman, songwriter and band leader of Austin soul
band Akina Adderley and The Vintage Playboys
What is your favorite nightlife spot in Austin?
All my nightlife activities involve live music. I did a
residency with Nakia (I sing in his band) at Sahara
Lounge, and that place is a great nightlife spot.
Off the beaten path, on the east side.
Where do you take visitors
in Austin?
Ive taken people to the Saxon Pub
to see Malford Milligan and Carolyn
Wonderland, as well as the Continental
Club to see Rosie Flores. Those are both
great, authentically Austin rooms to
take people to.
Where do you like to go to listen
to good music?
My favorite venue is the Continental Club. The room is
steeped in gritty history, the folks who work there are
really cool, and it sounds GREAT in there. Plus, both their
main room and the Gallery have outstanding music every
night, and a good variety of genres and artists.
Where do you get your favorite late-night grub?
24 Hour Diner is pretty great mostly locally grown and
raised food, yummy recipes, and they have chicken n
wafes. How can you
go wrong with chicken
n wafes? Plus, theres
always Kerbey Lane Cafe,
which I love because their
menu has everything, and
I like variety, especially at
two in the morning.

GRUENE HISTORIC DISTRICT
Home of Texas oldest continually operat-
ing dancehall (c.1878), this authentic
Texas town was placed on the National
Register of Historic Places in 1975 and has been resisting change
while making history and fun memories for visitors ever since. (gruenetexas.com)
// Revel, boot scoot or just have a cold beer to the best of live original tunes and
legendary musicians in the iconic Texas dance hall venue, Gruene Hall, site of
many movies and commercials.
// Soak up the casual rustic surroundings as you dine on Texas and Southern comfort favorites
in an 1870s cotton gin on the scenic riverbank at the Gristmill River Restaurant & Bar.
// Grab a tube and enjoy a leisurely oat down the Guadalupe River, or practice your 10 and
2 as you y-sh for big boys in the southernmost trout stream
in the Northern Hemisphere.
LUCKENBACH
Conjuring up Waylon Jennings version of the hit song
Luckenbach Texas (Back to the Basics), this cowboy com-
munity is a dancing, singing, all-around entertaining gem.
// Get a taste of local history with a stroll through the old post
ofce, saloon and general store.
// Kick back with a cold beer and watch some of Texas
nest musicians light up the legendary
Dancehall on weekends.
// Join in a lawn game of horseshoes and make some
new friends. If youre lucky, you might catch one of
Luckenbachs amusing armadillo races.
The foils to Austins chic city life are the
surrounding 14,000 square miles of
Hill Country, where historic towns and
more than two dozen vineyards meet a
laid-back and soulful lifestyle.

QUICK GUIDE TO
TEXAS HILL COUNTRY
WINERIES:
In Austin, the hills are alive with the
sound of bottles being uncorked. Our
rolling Hill Country is peppered
with pinots and swimming in
chardonnays. How better to
toast a Texas sunset than
sitting vineyard-side with
a glass of your favorite
varietal?
A worthwhile rst step to
navigating the sweet, rural
nectar is to virtually visit the
Texas Wine Trail
(texaswinetrail.com). This
one-stop site features
more than 30 area wineries.
Your journey could be a hop and stop
day trip to a combination of nearby
tastings, or could be extended out to
include overnights and girlfriend or
couple getaways, taking you on a
journey from Spicewood to
Fredericksburg, a destination located
about an hour and a half from
Austin proper, which offers a
beloved B&B selection.
Partake in special annual Texas
Hill Country Wine Trail events like
the Wine Lovers Trail in February,
where romantics sip and sample
vino and sweets along the way.
Or, try the Wine and Wildower
Trail, celebrating Aprils colorful
ourishing trails and fruitful
wines. Bonus: Designated
wineries hand out
wildower seed
packets courtesy of Wildseed
Farms and the Texas Department
of Agriculture.
New to the Hill Country sip scene comes
the Dripping Wine Trail, a collective of
three Dripping Springs-situated winer-
ies: Bell Springs Winery, Solaro Estate
Winery and Westcave Cellars Winery,
who have teamed up to offer sip seek-
ers an intimate wine trail experience.
Were lucky to have so many fantastic
wineries here in the Texas Hill Country,
but sometimes the sheer number of
options can be overwhelming, said
Nate Pruitt, owner and winemaker at
Bell Springs Winery. With the Dripping
Wine Trail, you dont need to spend
hours in the car driving to wineries,
rather, you can spend them tasting
wine, enjoying picnics and listening to
live music.

If you want to do the Texas two-step,
this is the place. The dance hall is
internationally known as an authentic
honky-tonk. Willie Nelson, George Straight
and Dolly Parton have performed here.
Dont miss the memorabilia room, aptly
nicknamed the tourist trap room, which

Its hard to miss the large suit of armor
outside this family-run club that books
as many as six acts in a single night. Its
been a haven for singer-songwriters, like
Bob Schneider, since 1990. There is a
nightly cover, but happy hour shows are
free. Parking can be brutal.
SOUTH CONGRESS
a b CONTINENTAL CLUB
continentalclub.com
1315 S. Congress Ave., (512) 441-2444
This retro Austin relic opened in 1957 as
a swanky private supper club, but in the
decades since, its transformed into a
mecca for roots, rockabilly, country and
swing music. A classic neon sign hangs
above the entrance, and custom hot rods
line South Congress Avenue in front of the
dimly lit club, which Playboy magazine
named one of the Best Bars in America.
