Moorestown Friends School
has won two awards in the Ameri-
can Scholastic Press Associa-
tions Annual Contest and Review
for Scholastic Yearbooks, Maga-
zines and Newspapers. For pro-
duction of the 2012-13 yearbook,
The Cupola, the school received
an overall first place award for ex-
cellence in the fields of writing,
photography and page design. A
special recognition for Best
Theme was also awarded.
This was the first time enter-
ing the book into a nationwide
competition, and we are very
proud to have received such pres-
tigious awards, said upper
school English teacher and year-
book advisor Emily Maciolek.
The other staff advisor to The
Cupola is Nicole Edmund. Ed-
mund is a middle- and upper-
school arts teacher, who also has
15 years of marketing experience.
Paired with the scholarly guid-
ance of Maciolek and Edmund, a
staff of 21 students, ranging from
grades nine through 12 work to-
gether and individually on de-
sign, photography and other cre-
ative aspects when compiling The
Cupola.
Many of the staff members
from last year are still
Moorestown Friends School stu-
dents who are continuing to work
hard on the production of the
coming edition. Senior editors
from the award-winning 2012-2013
edition were Nicole Hovatter,
Annie ODonnell and Lauren Car-
ney. When asked if the MFS year-
book staff would change any di-
mension to its processes after
winning such prestigious awards,
"Of course, every year we strive
to take better photos, cover more
events and continue to develop in-
novative themes," Edmund ex-
plained.
The advisors both agreed feed-
back given from the American
Scholastic Press Association
would be incorporated in their
plans for production this year.
One dynamic to creating The
Cupola that will not change post-
awards is that of a dedicated
team spirit.
Like all projects, there is a hier-
archy that helps the students
mentor each other through the
production process. Student edi-
tors help to focus other team
members on completing mis-
sions.
The theme, however, comes
from a collaborative group
process. While students are as-
signed work according to their
strengths, any given page of The
Cupola remains exciting due to
the photographs, design elements
and writing never being produced
and compiled by one student
alone.
Besides perfectly blended con-
tent and deft organization among

Moorestown Friends School
will host its 22nd annual Camp
Fair on Saturday, Feb. 1, from
11:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the schools
Field House. This is the largest
Camp Fair in South Jersey, fea-
turing dozens of camps. Admis-
sion is free and the event is open
to the public. The Camp Fair is
sponsored by the MFS Parent
Council.
There will be face painting and
other entertainment for children,
and refreshments and lunch will
be available for purchase.
A wide variety of summer
camps will be represented, in-
cluding day and residential
camps for young people in pre-
school through high school.
There will be camps from the
South Jersey/Philadelphia re-
gion, as well as camps based in
New York, Colorado, Texas, Ver-
mont, California and Florida.
The Camp Fair will also fea-
ture programs that offer opportu-
nities to travel internationally.
For instance, Actionquest
(www.actionquest.com) and Life-
works International (www.life-
works-international.com) offer
adventure travel, cultural immer-
sion and community service pro-
grams in locations around the
globe. Global Works (www.global-
workstravel.com) runs a service-
based program with internation-
al trips to Central and South
America, Europe, China, Africa
and the South Pacific.
Traditional camps will be pres-
ent, as well as specialty camps
with programs in art, sports, aca-
demic enrichment, advanced sci-
ence, technology and service. An
example of an academically ori-
ented program is the Summer
Academy in Applied Science and
Technology (www.seas.upenn.
edu/saast) offered by the School
of Engineering at the University
of Pennsylvania. This is a unique
opportunity for a selective group
of highly motivated and talented
high school students to experi-
ence rigorous and challenging
college-level coursework with
hands-on practical experience in
cutting edge technologies. Girls
attending Girlblazers at the
Alice Paul Institute www.ali-
cepaul.org/programs.htm will
learn skills to help them become
leaders in their school and com-
munity and will meet women
who have blazed a trail for them.
Sports camps attending the Camp
Fair include the Philadelphia
Phillies Baseball Academy
www.philliescamps. com and
Philadelphia Union Soccer
Schools (www.unionsoccer-
schools.com).
The Moorestown Friends
School Summer Scholars Pro-
gram (www.summer.mfriends.
org), which will be represented at
the Camp Fair, provides opportu-
nities for children to innovate,
create, experiment, and collabo-
rate with others.
MFS is also home to ESF Sum-
mer Camps www.esfcamps.com.
ESF offers activity day camps for
children ages 3 to 15.

A
tlantic City has been a hub of
economic development for
New Jersey since the 1970s.
The citys casinos have long been the
states defining attraction to out-of-
state guests, even more so than its ex-
pansive beaches, which are a huge
summertime draw.
AC has been a focal point of develop-
ment, tourism and marketing, and has
generously repaid the favor in the
form of revenue and taxes to the state.
But a disturbing trend that began al-
most 10 years ago continues today: Peo-
ple are spending less and less money at
Atlantic City casinos every day.
The Center for Gaming Research at
UNLV reports that, since 2006, total
revenue at Atlantic City casinos has
dropped a whopping 45 percent. Casi-
nos brought in $2.9 billion last year,
down from $3.1 billion in 2012 the sev-
enth straight year that revenue num-
bers were down from the year before.
In the wake of surrounding states
approving expanded gambling offer-
ings at racetracks and standalone casi-
nos, New Jersey no longer has the East
Coast monopoly on gambling that it
had even 10 years ago. No longer do
gamblers have to choose between New
Jersey, Las Vegas and, to a small de-
gree, Connecticut; they can now stay
closer to home in Pennsylvania,
Delaware and even Maryland to place
a bet.
Gov. Christie and other legislators
have recognized this alarming trend
and have focused their efforts on alter-
native forms of gambling to pump fuel
into Atlantic Citys fire. Online gam-
bling began Nov. 21 with casinos re-
porting $8.4 million in related revenue
since that time and the push for le-
galized sports betting continues.
But other surrounding states are al-
ready following suit in their own push
for online gambling, and New Jerseys
case for legalizing sports gambling in
the state doesnt look promising.
So it seems about time to look else-
where outside of gambling as a fu-
ture source of significant revenue for
the state.
If Atlantic City casinos continue to
lose revenue, and if online gambling
doesnt make up those losses, then the
state as a whole will suffer.
What else is out there? What else is
available? What else can attract
tourists all year round?
It might not be possible to answer
these questions now, but lawmakers
need to recognize the need to come up
with a revenue solution soon. Our
states long-term economic health
could depend upon it.
in our opinion
A gambling alternative?
New Jersey needs to find a new source of revenue, not a new form of gambling
Your thoughts
Should New Jerseys tourism industry
continue to rely so heavily on gambling?
Or should the state search for alternative
revenue? Share your thoughts on
the subject, and others, through a letter
to the editor.
As part of her broader 2014 Burlington
County health and wellness initiative,
Burlington County Freeholder Director
Leah Arter announced that the Burlington
County Medical Reserve Corps has been
awarded a $20,000 Medical Reserve Corps
Challenge Award from the National Asso-
ciation of County and City Health Officials
in partnership with the Office of the Sur-
geon General.
The award will be used to train MRC
members to train daycare providers in im-
plementing the CATCH Early Childhood
program. CEC is designed to nurture a love
of physical activity, provide an introduc-
tion to classroom-based gardening and nu-
trition and encourage healthy eating in
children age 3-5.
This important award will allow us to
better prevent obesity and chronic diseases
amongst our preschool children, allowing
them to live longer healthier lives, Arter
said.
Nearly 200 MRC units from across the
United States completed the application,
and the top 29 most promising applicants
received awards totaling nearly $600,000 to
implement the proposed initiatives. MRC
as Partners in Prevention will begin early
this year.
The MRC Challenge Award funds MRC
units to carry out innovative projects in
their communities that can be replicated
on a national level and align with one of
four focus areas: community resilience,
chronic disease prevention, partners for
empowered communities and mental and
emotional well-being.
The MRC as Partners in Preventions
overall goal is to reduce the risk of obesity
and to increase fruit and vegetable con-
sumption, physical activity and foster a
healthier environment while children
learn and play by implementing the
CATCH program.

the entire Cupola staff, the staff
meets as an academic class
throughout the school year. The
class has encouraged some stu-
dents to plan on pursuing future
careers in work they were first in-
troduced to through compiling
the yearbook.
Editor-in-Chief Morgan Sloane
said, Our yearbook is a real busi-
ness, not just a class. Ive found
that real world experience to be
invaluable. Ive been with year-
book for four years working pri-
marily with the photography and
design. Its helped me learn to or-
ganize my time to meet deadlines.
At first look, it seems designing a
page is easy, but there is a lot of
thought and time that go into
each spread. Im planning on
studying photography next year
in college, and pursuing a career
that enables me to use my design
skills.
Amy Gilligan, editor-in-chief,
elaborated on what skills she will
take with her throughout her fu-
ture plans. Ive been involved in
yearbook for three years, working
primarily in managing the pro-
duction of different sections. Ive
learned a lot about organization,
collaboration and coordination
within an organization like year-
book. Ive especially learned how
to be patient when dealing with
student groups.
No secrets or clues were gath-
ered about The Cupolas 2013-2014
edition. However, one fact re-
mains clear: The MFS yearbook
staff will be busy throughout the
year completing outstanding, vi-
sionary work.
Whether The Cupola receives
national awards after the release
of this years book has yet to be
determined.

Prepare to be amazed the minute you step into Gray Gables Estate.
There is no shortage of stunning details throughout this home, from
the pocket doors, to the octagonal solarium, to the dining room whose
beauty is unmatched anywhere. The kitchen is a chefs dream with
plenty of prep space, oversized island, butlers' pantry with working
sink, an indoor cooking fireplace in the servants' kitchen, and more!
Like to entertain, have a lot of hobbies, need to house overnight
guests? Look no further, because with 8 bedrooms the possibilities are
endless....office, hobby room, guest rooms, playroom, let your imagi-
nation run wild. The grounds are equally as impressive with a wrap
around porch, many rare trees, and beautiful flowering plants, a two
car and one car garage, 3 original horse stalls, an in-ground pool, and
a pool house that includes a cabana with bar area, changing room, and
a storage area. Words cannot do this home justice, seeing is believing.
