PRESIDENT'S REVIEW
Peter Gaisford, President
In all areas and age groups the club continues to move forwards. As well as the serious side of training surf lifesavers and lifesaving competition, the club members organise and conduct, the Perranporth Triathlon, lifesaving demonstrations, BBQs, a Beach Volleyball event and the Clubbie Classic surfing event. The club has a well balanced committee with skills from many different areas, all working together to take the club forward. The committee is working on producing a club development plan. This plan will give the club a pathway for future projects and help to set achievable goals. Such a plan is a prerequisite when applying for funds from outside sources. Raising finance every year is always going to be a challenge. The club needs to ensure there are funds available for the maintenance of the building and to provide the equipment required for members to learn their surf lifesaving skills. I would like to thank the sponsors and local businesses for their continued support. Perranporth Surf Lifesaving Club is a registered charity and well received within the local community. With the support of the club, members Mel Perks and Andy Sidebottom completed a sponsored swim along the north coast from St. Ives to Perranporth in the amazing time of just over seven hours, Mel raising monies for Macmillan Cancer Support and Andy raising funds for his school friend The Max Levene Trust. Congratulations to both upon the successful completion of a very testing challenge. The club strikes the right balance between, training, competition, qualifications and simply having enjoyment on the best beach in the world. Get all these ingredients right and you have a surf lifesaving club that people want to join and can be proud of.

CHAIRMANS REVIEW
Dave Meads, Chairman
It has been a challenging yet exciting year for me. Chairing a group of dynamic, hardworking and conscientious people who dont mind facing the elements and fighting their way across to the club house on a cold, wet and windy winter s night or on a sunkissed summer s evening sitting inside, while perfectly clean three foot waves go unridden. I thank you all for playing your invaluable part in further developing and strengthening this wonderful club. Over this year a lot has been discussed, organised and done. A proactive approach by the committee has meant targets have been met and work completed on time and to a high standard. The club house itself now has new guttering on the front, a well designed mens changing room that meets with Club Mark standards, a functional manhole cover, a new TV and, thanks to Paul Sparks Electrics and the persistence of Pete Gaisford, the whole club is now earthed. The five year plan has been worked on and further developed. This document will be the clubs focus and direction and will structure what we do and plan for in the future. My hopes are that it will be ready early next year. With the hard work of Nigel Bowden and Graeme Milne we have nearly achieved Club Mark Status, gaining a 1000 grant to assist with its completion. The clubs corporate identity has been modernised (with the help of Z o Latham). The new logo is eye-catching and visually shows what we are about. New club wear has been produced and in order to promote the club a fantastic website has been developed by club members, Dave Cromie and Jonty Brooks. It has greatly improved how we communicate with our club members and is an area we need to develop further if we are to stay as one of the premier surf lifesaving clubs in the UK. We have developed strong partnerships with outside charities and organisations like the SLSGB, RNLI and the Eden Project to name a few. We are forging links with local schools; introducing children to the challenges of surf lifesaving and the excitement of surfboat rowing. Overall, I feel the club is progressing and is adapting itself ready to face the challenges of the 21st Century.

CAPTAIN'S LOG

Pete Whitbread-Abrutat, Captain

Writing this on a (very) late train back from London, a can of tepid Tribute lubricates my typing as I wonder how many of my fellow travellers know of surf lifesaving or of Perranporth; yet both, to us, are inseparable and form such a huge chunk of our lives how dare they not know! For all kinds of reasons this has been a tricky year, yet I feel that we have continued to deliver a generally well-organized, inclusive and fun club; doing so really isnt easy worthwhile things rarely are requiring a monumental effort by a small bunch of crazy volunteers. Nevertheless there have been several new developments and, at the risk of omitting some, they include: improvements to the male changing rooms thanks Mr. Lawrence et al; an expanded club patrols system (building on the success of last years new system); new website (thanks Jonty Brookes and Dave Cromie); creation of our Lifeguard Training Zone T-shirts for sale to the public and raising awareness of our illustrious club (lovely work Zoe Latham); awarding of the inaugural Les Stopher Lifesaving Student of the Year Award (well done Frances Keane); and the creation of an ace reel and line team, ably coached by the original experts of this once vital lifesaving technique (coaches: Big Al Holmes, Dick Abrams, Tommy Tremewan and Chris Harding) thanks for your patience guys I hope we didnt shame you too much in the Carnival in our 1950s swimsuits (funniest evening of the year!); juniors/ youth section growing from strength to strength (thanks Dave Townsend, Simon Boyle and Jason Wheeler); and lets not forget our two enjoyable public demonstration evenings bringing the club together.

This year has also seen some outstanding individual performances in many areas: Ive already mentioned Frances Keane; there was also Mels and Andys ridiculous Big Swim covering the distance between St. Ives and Perranporth quicker than last years board paddlers nall for charity mate!; Holly Hawkey winning everything everywhere in the water; Sam Bowden becoming Cornish under 15 ski paddle champion (and still not old enough to shave!); and the biggest thank you in the world to Spike our Clubbie of the Year for

everything she does, she is a foundation of the club and without her we couldnt do even half of what we achieve every year. Two stand-out awards at the Annual Dinner this year: Pete Gaisford was finally recognized for decades of service to surf lifesaving by SLSGB, which awarded him Life Membership; similarly, Robin Howell was recognized for many years of selfless service to our club by being awarded Honorary Life Membership. Very well done both! In any organization that has been around for a long time, there are important traditions running through it like blood, yet it has persisted only because its people have been able to adapt to new circumstances and opportunities the only constant thing in life is the need to adapt to change. As a club we need to keep changing because, although we are good, we can always be better. This necessity sometimes creates personal tensions, but the lens of long-term benefit to club should always take precedence. Speaking of change, the two triathlon Chrisses (whats the plural of Chris?), Messers Strickland and Harding, are standing down after decades of running one of the best events of its kind anywhere and Jeanne Barsch, after 10 years of Membership Secretary, is also moving on (I hope well still get the flapjacks Jeannie)! Finally, this is my final annual report as Club Captain. I started on this journey of blind naivety and madness at the AGM in 2007 and would like to thank everyone or their patience when I didnt know what the hell was going on and for showing me the reins. Being Captain is not an easy job, but it would be a damn site harder and less enjoyable without such an amazingly supportive bunch of people to work with. I am convinced our club must have a great future ahead of it because of the unique and very special people who comprise it. Personally this year has been particularly hard for my family, but we have been simply astounded by the compassion, empathy and support of our surf club friends undoubtedly the pillar of support that got us through this nightmare year. Thank you for everything you have done for Maxine, the girls and me. We will never forget it. See you on the beach!

WHAT WE DO

SECRETARYS REPORT

Nigel Bowden, Honorary Secretary

It has been another busy year for the club with a full programme of sports events, lifesaving training and club improvements. The new male changing room has now been finished and we can all see the benefits it brings. This year has also brought a lot of changes within Surf Life Saving GB in which Perranporth SLSC has been involved. SLSGBs new governance review has been much discussed and has divided many members within our association. It is now going forward to be ratified at an Extraordinary General Meeting. Perranporth SLSC has backed the new proposals and has always voiced its concerns at both national and regional levels. As with most charities, SLSGB needs to employ staff, which has been the main talking point of the new structure and its sustainability. Within the current paid structure, Perranporth members have key roles in taking this forward. Andrew Milky Byatt, SLSGB Sports Manager: Over the past year he has developed the new lifesaver pathways and linked lifesaving with lifesaving sport. He has also introduced the new Total Club which is the way forward to creating new funding avenues for clubs. He has also led the SLSGB sports event team, which has run so many great events this year. Karen Perks SLSGB Training Manager (has now stood down due to unforeseen circumstances): Within her time at SLSGB Karen was instrumental in reforming the Lifesaving Commission and aligning our awards to the education framework which in time will be taken on by the awarding body. She has discovered several funding avenues which will be passed down through the club network. Nigel Bowden SLSGB Education Officer: Working with the newly formed Lifesaving Commission, I have been developing the new lifeguard manual and award structure, with the aim of creating new awards to develop clear pathways for our club members from nippers to lifeguards. Along with the paid staff we have volunteers working within the Lifesaving Commission; for example Dave Meads, along with all his club commitments, is a member of the working group which is developing the new lifeguard manual. 2010 has been a year of proposed change within surf lifesaving; 2011 will see a lot of change in the way we deliver lifesaving. I believe Perranporth SLSC will be at the forefront of these changes and will be leading as a centre of excellence as it always has done.

LIFESAVING TRAINING

Simon Crayfourd, Head Lifesaving Instructor

The 2010 season has seen Perranporth SLSC continue to deliver high quality lifesaving training to our members. I must start by giving a massive and heartfelt thank you to Robin Howell, Alex Bowden, Dave Meads and Nigel Bowden who took up the challenge of delivering the lifeguard training for the season. Unfortunately, due to having to travel throughout the UK extensively for work, I was not able to be as involved as I had hoped to be, so the support given by this small group of experts was vital to ensure we could continue to train lifeguards throughout the season. The season got off to a productive start with Dave Meads and Pete Whitbread-Abrutat attending the first ever SLSGB National Trainer Assessor update, held at the RNLI Lifeboat College, Poole. The weekend of workshops was a huge success and has led to the establishment of consistency throughout the regions in delivery and assessment for the lifeguard award something that has been missing for a very long time.

This new-felt enthusiasm and confidence in the system led to a burst of early training to ensure that all the members working and volunteering for the RNLI were brought up-to-date and ready for the challenges of the season ahead.

Throughout the season there were a total of eight new lifeguard awards obtained by club members. Nigel Bowden has also completed his Probationary Trainer period and qualified as a full status trainer. Well done Nigel. Congratulations to everyone who achieved their Lifeguard awards this season. We look forward to seeing you all on the beach next season putting your training to best use.

LIFEGUARDING

Simon Crayfourd, RNLI Development Officer (Lifeguards) and Perranporth SLSC Committee Member
The 2010 season has once again been extremely busy for the RNLI Lifeguard service and the Perranporth SLSC volunteer patrols, despite the now predictably unpredictable weather. From Easter through to the October half-term our members have worked as both paid lifeguards and selflessly given their time as volunteers to ensure our beach remains one of the most popular and well lifeguarded in the UK.
Professional Lifeguards Active Volunteer Lifeguards The relationship between the RNLI Annabel Barsch Nigel Bowden and Perranporth SLSC has continued Alex Bowden Chrissie Davies to strengthen. The club patrol format Margh Brewer Dave Meads providing two qualified lifeguard or Ben Gardiner (PCSO) Matt Thomas lifeguard support volunteers to work Dan Goodway Pete Whitbread-Abrutat alongside the RNLI guards has Steve Gregory earned high praise from the local Robin Howell Matt Johnson RNLI management team. From Turner Moyse providing water patrols on the rescue board to standing in waist deep water Fraser Thompson Hewitt Josh Walters with a rescue tube and whistle, or Lucy Williams simply dealing with the hundreds of Ellie Woodward weaver fish victims that come through the doors, everyone has played a vital role. The proactive approach of the patrol members and their willingness to undertake anything asked of them is a credit to the club and the lifeguard trainers that have spent so much of their personal time developing their skills.

12

Unfortunately, there have been some tragic incidents on Perranporth Beach during the summer. Through the hard work of Perranporth SLSC and the RNLI we can ensure that these tragedies are kept to the absolute minimum. Whilst there are many examples of Perranporth club members assisting the lifeguards and people out of lifeguard hours, one of the best examples occurred on the 11 th of August when Eleanor Clarke tragically died as a result of falling in a mine adit at Sunny Corner. Simon Boyle who, as normal, was at the clubhouse doing one of the hundreds of things he does every year for the club, came to the aid of Eleanor and the RNLI by donning a spare lifeguard shirt, then running to the scene to aid with crowd control and assisting with waterline patrol duties whilst the lifeguards re instated their equipment and attempted to return to normal duties. Helping people in their time of need is what Perranporth SLSC was established for all those years ago, and I sincerely hope everyone in the club is proud of the efforts made each year by the members to ensure everyone who visits our beach is safe whilst here.
Some other stats Rescues: Major first aid: Preventative actions: 144 26 37,561 Assistances: Minor first aid: RNLI volunteer hours: 54 608 159 Lives saved: Lost children: Club patrol hours: 6 78 232

INSHORE RESCUE BOAT

Ben Gardiner, IRB Captain
This year was a quieter one with respect to the club IRB, although it was still used in many club-related activities, including several patrols run in conjunction with club volunteers working with RNLI lifeguards, including involvement in a few rescues.
IRB Events in 2010 UPDATED., surf boat safety cover Tolcarne, St Piran festival, club patrols, club demonstration night, The Big Swim, Perranporth Carnival

IRB activity was curtailed for several reasons some personal and some related to equipment, the latter leading to the club, frustratingly, being unable to support the RNLI in providing water safety cover during the aquathon and triathlon and IRB Qualifications some other club activities. Other issues curtailing use of the IRB 3 Tutors included: engine problems (kindly sorted by Nick Barsch when my 5 Trainers own troubleshooting was left lacking) and unexpected (and new!) 1 Probationary Trainer problems between who was and was not eligible to use the IRB 2 Probationary Drivers 2 Probationary Crew relating to a lack of alignment between RNLI and SLSGB IRB 6 Crew awards. SLSGB assures me that clearer guidelines and award 16 Drivers structures will be ready for next season. Also next season I am hoping to be signed off as an SLSGB Surf Life Saving Trainer/ Assessor (my RNLI trainer must be re-authorised for SLSGB). To address the equipment issues and provide us with a new Arancia boat that aligns us with what other clubs and the RNLI use, we have very recently submitted a grant, kindly pulled together with more than a little effort by Dave Cromie and Jill Stott. If successful this will provide us with a new boat, engine, trailer and sundry equipment. This will mean that by the start of next season we will have an IRB fit for purpose, enabling us to expand our activities next year, including: more training leading to more qualified clubbies, IRB competitions, more patrolling in support of club activities and involvement in more community activities. The current boat and engine will be kept as back-up and safety cover for IRB training. Fingers crossed!

SURF LIFESAVING SPORTS

Nigel Bowden, Sports Coordinator

2010 has seen another full year of sport with an ever increasing calendar of sporting events. Along with the normal Surf Carnival we are used to attending, there has been an increase in individual board, ski and swim events along with the Legacy Ironman series this year. STILLWATER COMPETITIONS Cornish Nippers Frostbite, St. Ives. This event has grown in popularity over the years and now runs on two Saturday evenings, the first evening being the 10 - 13 years old and the following week 7 - 9 years old. Although no medals were won, top 10 places were achieved helped setting personal goals. All the hard work that the parent helpers put in to field the team is a credit to the club.
Team members Ned Owen, Theo Morgan Lundie, George Hudson Gaisford, Cameron Sykes, Thomas McRitchie, Abi Pope, Katie Whitbread-Abrutat, Jessica Nicholls, Molly Plant, Amy Purohit, Alice Whitbread-Abrutat, Toby Emmanuel, Conall Cromie, Eoghan Cromie, Charlotte Farr Team Manager: Spike Gaisford

Open Cornish Stillwater, Carn Brea: This event has grown over the years and is still a fun event where all juniors and open competitors can compete as one team. There are no medals issued for this event but our Perranporth team finished in the top three. National Stillwater Championships, Cardiff This year the National Stillwater was held over two weekends at the new Cardiff international swimming pool. This turned out to be a fabulous venue, once we found the pool! Nippers This year we were only able to take two nippers due to the distance involved. The two were a credit to Perranporth and although coming back with no medals they still put on an impressive show.
Team members Amy Purohit, Alice Whitbread-Abrutat, Tom McRitchie Team Manager: Kathy Purohit

Youth An eight man team travelled up for the Youth Stillwater. For four of our competitors this was their first time competing at this level. All four set their first PBs and hopefully they will continue to improve as they progress in the sport. The seasoned members have continued to improve their times. The hard work put in by Dave Townsend, the Youth Team Manager, is now starting to pay off, and thanks to Jason Wheeler, Simon Boyle and Jeannie Barsch for accompanying the team to Cardiff.

Open/ Masters A small team of senior competitors travelled up and achieved an overall place of seventh out of the 15 teams competing. A few of our masters competed in both open and masters events, as the competition was on the same weekend. Our best results were John Arnold with two golds and two silvers. Well done to all our club members who took part. OCEAN COMPETITIONS Max Hocking Fun Day This annual event, run by the Cornwall Region, was held at Praa Sands, with over 500 children taking part. This is a good introduction to those nippers who have not been involved in lifesaving sport as children are in mixed teams, offering a good chance to meet nippers from other clubs. Perranporth had a good attendance with 25 children and lots of mums and dads. The weather and the sea were kind to everyone in the morning, but there was a little rain in the afternoon, but it did not dampen anyones spirits.

Cornish Surf Lifesaving Championships Nippers The Cornish Nipper Champs were held at Carbis Bay, St. Ives with 450 competitors from 11 clubs competing over two days in almost perfect conditions. Again, Perranporth took a small team of nippers and did extremely well, just missing out on medals. Our best result was Alice Whitbread-Abrutat with a silver medal in the Beach Flags.

SLSGB National Lifesaving Sport Championships 2010 saw the first six-day event held by Surf Life Saving GB within Falmouth Week. It was held at Gyllyngvase Beach and incorporated three two-day events: Masters, Youth and Nippers. With many traders and other activities running alongside the events, starting with the Masters and finishing with the Nippers parading to Events Square, it was a spectacular week. Nippers This year saw a very strong nipper event, with over 20 teams taking part. Perranporth were very unlucky not to medal in several events. Abi Pope was our highest point scorer, but closely followed by Amy Purohit, Katie Whitbread- Abrutat, Tom McRitchie, Alice Whitbread- Abrutat, Annabelle Purse and Conall Cromie.

Youth After the success of the stillwater event in Cardiff, a small team has developed and has continued to grow throughout the summer. Gyllyngvase saw one of our largest youth teams for several years, finishing 12th in the overall team ranking. Particular praise should be given to the final year pairing of Steve Gregory (Team Captain) and Alex Bowden for winning the true lifesaving event the Board Rescue.

NIPPERS

Spike Gaisford, Nippers Manager

We have had another lovely year of fun at the beach with an abundance of new and eager faces joining us each Thursday. The children have been working steadily towards the new SLSGB levels which assess their competence in the water as well as their safety knowledge. Winter swimming continues to be well attended. We managed to purchase 25 sets of swim fins for winter swimming as well as six paddle/ surfboards from the Thursday cake table and Swimathon money this year. We also used some of this money to subsidise entries for the children who competed at Nationals and towards awards. Competitions have seen a big drop in team members, probably because life is extremely busy. However we want to encourage more children to compete in either stillwater (pool) or beach/surf lifesaving events that are held in Cornwall and nationally. The events are good fun for all and children foster many friendships and teamwork experience.

Peter Gaisford has enthusiastically taken on the role of Age 7 Beach Coach while Mike Woods has kindly volunteered to coach the 7s in the pool. A big show of appreciation must go to our parent coaches, Age Managers and the small, but willing, group of mums and dads who come each week to provide voluntary water cover for the age 8 13 year groups. We really do need more parents to step up and help in the water and with training as without parent helpers, Nippers would not exist. Also, goodbye to Mary Rose Merrin who is sadly retiring as Age Manager this year, so there is a vacant post; fun, mad people may apply! It was fantastic to see so many children at the Club Demonstration and Collection nights interacting with the rest of the club and showing the public what Nippers is all about. With the support of the parents and the wonderful cakes so willingly supplied, Nippers played a great role in fundraising this year.

21

One last word! A big round of applause to Trina Gregory and Karen Longstaff who between them ensure (quietly behind the scenes) that the organisation of Nippers runs smoothly each week. We look forward to 2011 being as enjoyable.

JUNIORS AND YOUTH

Dave Townsend, Youth Co-ordinator

We have had a great turn out from youth members during the year and numbers have increased by 100% on last year and are expected to increase further during 2011. We have had a very enjoyable time training the Youth Team this year and seeing so many compete at the Cornish and National events for some members this was their first competition experience ever; for example with a very inexperienced team at Nationals we came 12th out of 22 clubs a great result; we even managed to gain the title of National Board Rescue Champions in the Youth under 19 event - well done Steve Gregory and Alex Bowden!

We also joined up with Falmouth Surf Living Saving Club every third week for training at Maenporth, which was successful thanks to the help of Roger Stephens, Falmouth SLSC. We hope to continue this in 2011 as the Youth Team gained valuable coaching and improved inter-club relations. We have now started winter training at Redruth pool with more swim training to improve our swimming standard. This is also assisted by Mike Wood giving up one evening a month to come and coach. We hope to go to the National Stillwaters at Cardiff in March. Ski-paddling is going well. We now have more members interested, than we have equipment, but we are working our way around this. This is turning out to be another successful part of training for Youth and all are very keen to continue in 2011. Our Youth Captain, Steve Gregory, has virtually exhausted himself with his enthusiasm motivating the younger members. Thank you, Steve. Also, a big thank you to Jason Wheeler and Simon Boyle for their commitment and for giving up their time every Monday and Tuesday for youth training. Thanks also to Catherine Hooper for all her help as female cover and making drinks and providing biscuits etc after training

THE LADIES

Vicky Gould, Ladies Captain

The winter months saw an impressive and constant flow of surf club ladies trudging across the cold, windy beach to regularly attend weekly Pilates sessions, kindly lead by Ellie and Sally. The sessions were so popular that we ended up running two sessions per week, and thats not including the boys! Oops! Sorry guys, this year its for all! By mid-May the ladies were ready to test out their newly-improved and very impressive core strength, beginning the season with a couple of fantastic paddles to explore the caverns between Droskyn and St Agnes. If only the gorgeous June evenings we experienced this year had extended into August! However, the gale force winds, large swells and driving rain did not deter all, and with massive thanks to Ellie Woodward and Annabel Barsch, we were able to man the Friday evening sessions throughout the season. With the combination of water expertise, the ladies, both new and experienced, were able to build confidence in the water on rescue boards and swimming technique and, more recently, with the acquisition of six new swell boards we have some Californian surfing girls/ ladies in the club! It has been great to have more Perran ladies compete and support some of the local surfing competitions as well as SLS events, including the Clubbie Classic (well done Ellie W and Sarah F), The Super Swell Off and the Red Bull Team 5 event (Vic G and Kath C).

In May Jeannie and Annabel Barsch and Rachel Church braved the Falmouth freezing waters to take part in the Castle-to-Castle RLNI swim. Ellie Woodward and I supported the event on rescue boards along with other lifeguards, and quickly realised the challenge for all the swimmers was very tough! Strong off-shore winds and an ebbing tide made the swim extremely difficult and long, and many did not finish. A massive well done to you ladies for reaching the shores of St. Mawes; a fantastic achievement and a great event. Lets do it again next year Ill stay on the rescue board, thanks very much! One our highest achieving surf club ladies this year is Holly Hawkey, who joined the club at the beginning of 2010. Not only is Holly now the National Board Champion, winning the
24

National Distance Board Series this year at Bournemouth, she also came away with several medals at the Nationals, gaining silver in the ski, bronze on the board and fourth in the surf swim. Holly was also selected for the GB team, competing in Japan in September and achieving eighth in the Iron Woman. Awesome work Holly. It has been great to have the previous Ladies Captain, Ellie Woodward, return to Perran shores. Ellie has been a fantastic help in many areas of the club and teamed up with Annabel Barsch and Holly Hawkey to win bronze in the board relay in the Nationals. Annabel also competed in the Cornish at Portreath, teaming up with Anita Adams and winning silver in the tube rescue. Nice one girls! On a final note, with such an influx of strong, new ladies to the club this year, I am really looking forward to 2011 and am personally hoping to compete again with all you keen fit ladies. Lets keep up the training and core strength work this winter and get prepared for bagging some medals next year!

SURFBOAT

Liz Tremayne, Surf Boat Captain

2010 a year of consolidation. This proved to be a calm, cohesive year among all the crews with real sense of inter-team collaboration (and multiple pregnancies in the stroke seat, future strokes beware!). We gained a new male crew courtesy of St. Agnes gig club, boat-sick Aussie and several new recruits. Face planting became a regular feature of our events amongst the new Perran bows and, with the continued patience and determination by our three sweeps, we have safely passed through the challenges of the year. Porthcawl, the first race of the UK Shyman summer series, provided an unheard of 2 - 3 foot waves and blue skies. Newly-formed Perran Raiders a mix of old and new maintained third place which set the scene for the rest of the season. The Perran Misfits, an entirely new crew, began their surfboat journey, getting a taste for adventure.

Saunton was another glorious day, but the excitement of waves escaped us and with millpond conditions we were given a run for our money by the flat water rowers. Perran Misfits (men) clawed their way up the surfboat ladder of success. Ladies crews, Panthers and Raiders provided strong competition for the Porthtowan girls, but unable to rise to the might of Bude, Watergate put the ghosts to rest as the Perran crews took to the waves, and placed the memories of 2009 behind them. The UK Open Championship at Saunton welcomed an unprecedented number of crews. A cold, rainy start coupled with poor swell delayed the start. Entertainment was provided by male crews sporting translucent gold thongs and a luminous mankini much to the distress of the borrowed Perran sweep. The Perran Raiders rowed strongly and triumphed to become silver medallists. Tolcarne gave the best waves of the season, 3-4 ft, and proved very eventful. Dramatic Tantrum from Llantwit, and a Speedo malfunction, left a Bournemouth bear blushing. The girls survived a major bashing of the waves, emerging from the foam to be greeted by the sight of Gary Walters (Porthtowan sweep) hanging off the boat by the sweep oar, screeching like a banshee, Wait for me!. This image will forever be burnt into our minds.

The Europeans saw massive swells, storms, and relocations in a bid to hold the event. The Perran Raiders with a Porthtowan addition fought through the heavy surf, and ran like the clappers to steal the thunder from the Dutch girls to be runners-up to the European champions. Bournemouth didnt let us down with the sunshine, for the second year in the row. Initially the shore break proved a challenge since the boats had to be launched from a steep sandbank, and jumping in became an Olympic high jump event. Surprisingly, the season ended as it started with unexpected waves in a usually millpond environment. The Perran Raiders cemented third place in the UK Shyman summer series with the Perran Misfits, entering the season as a new crew, finishing in a very respectable fifth place. Quote of the season: If I have seen further it is by standing on the shoulders of giants (courtesy of that famous surfboat rower, Isaac Newton). 2009 opened widened our eyes, 2010 built skills and confidence. 2011 is time to fight for victory!

Perranporth Surf Challenge Triathlon

Chris Strickland, Triathlon Organiser
This year s triathlon was the 23rd consecutive year that this event has been run. Each year it has developed a little more and this year was no exception with the addition of SNUGG and Cycle Logic stands on the green to add to the Thule stand. Also, a new finish gantry was purchased this year. This year was undoubtedly another success in terms of spectacle, very satisfied competitors, publicity from the triathlon magazines and funds raised. The club raised 7,500 through the event and that is with the 1,000 finish gantry allowed for. Everyone who turned out to help deserves a big pat on the back for giving up their time and making the event such a success. The feedback from the sponsors and competitors was first class. Also this months 220 magazine mentions the race three times and names it the Toughest Tri of the Month.

It is worth saying that there were a few people who gave up three days of their time to ensure the race was a success. On Friday they were on hand to make sure the registration tent was in place and the transition area was erected. On the Saturday registration started, the sponsors were put in place on the green, the finish gantry and funnel were put up and the bike course was marked out. Chris Harding, Nigel Bowden, Chris Ballinger, Pete Gaisford, Pete Postle, Stuart Thorn plus others all got stuck in during those three days. Chris and Nigel were there all day every day. For next year the club needs new members for the Tri committee any volunteers would be welcomed with open arms! There is one note of caution and that is that some marshals didnt turn up and one or two were late to their points. This put everyone else under extra pressure and me under pressure from the police! Next year the police wont be helping due to budget cuts etc. The club needs to be right on the ball to ensure the marshalling is bang on. The Tri committee needs real commitment from all members for the whole weekend. Next year s event takes place on 18th September 2011.

MEMBERSHIP

Jeanne Barsch, Membership Secretary

We understand that the SLSGB affiliation fee is set to increase in 2011 from 15 to 20 per member. As it rose from 10 to 15 last year, this means that the affiliation fee that we have to pay SLSGB for each member for insurance purposes has doubled in the last two years. For the past year the club absorbed the increase but, unfortunately, this year we have no option but to increase our annual membership fees for the coming year, as follows: Senior 80 Youth 45 Junior 40 Nipper 40 Family (2 adults & 2 children) 160 Family (2 adults & 3 or more children) 180
Membership type Senior Youth Junior Nipper Associate Honorary Life Total (Family memberships) Breakdown of fees () Membership fees paid Affiliation fees to SLSGB Balance to club 2010 132 19 20 109 6 18 304 (24) 2009 129 36 18 104 6 17 310 (26) 2010 12,030 4,200 7,830 2008 132 30 36 116 13 19 346 (23) 2009 12,470 3,100 9,370 2007 125 38 41 110 10 18 342 2008 12,298 4,686 7,612

After almost 10 years on the Committee, firstly as Junior Manager and the last six years as Membership Secretary, Ive decided to hand over the baton. Ive loved doing the job and will still be happy to continue serving the club as a competition official, lifeguarding the Redruth pool sessions, helping at fundraising events and, of course, having fun on Ladies Nights! I wish the club every success for 2011 and in the future.

FUNDRAISING AND EVENTS

Dave Cromie, Fundraising Coordinator

What another incredibly busy year for fundraising! Id like to thank the many dedicated members who go that extra mile to help raise money for the club. Whether working with our sponsors, organising events, pitching up at popular events like bag packs and collections or simply helping out with BBQs you do an invaluable job often without thanks or the appreciation that you deserve. Well done you know who you are! Weve tried this year to consolidate and develop fundraising activities that are also fun to participate in. The Beach Volleyball, Curry & Quiz nights, Boardies Day and, especially, the Demo Nights have provided entertainment as well as income. Its worth remembering, however, that all these fun events have hidden costs in organising time, effort or food supplies. Collections and bag packs where money raised is essentially all profit - make an essential contribution. Given the sporadic turn out for collections this season, we need to figure out if this traditional fundraising activity has a viable future in its current form.

The romance of bag-packing The Triathlon and Aquathon weekend continues to be the major fundraising generator for Perranporth SLSC and it was encouraging to see our sponsors take advantage of the event to exhibit their goods. Having sponsors reap some tangible benefits from these events will help build our relationship with them and secure support for future years. We looked at some novel ways to raise funds this year, most notably perhaps the launch of the Lifeguard Training Zone T-Shirt to tourists, which we plan to sell in more substantial numbers this coming season both on the beach and from the new website.

We applied for a Community Grant in February for AV equipment to upgrade our training facility and we secured a 500 donation from the local council. As the Club Development plan finally comes together, we will be targeting larger grants in the coming year. We have a small team with expertise in chasing grants now in place to work on this. Once again, Id like to remind members that you can raise money for the club when you shop and search online at www.easyfundraising.org.uk/perranporthslsc. I urge each and every club member to take two minutes to register at this site. On behalf of the Club & Committee I would like to thank all of our sponsors, donors and supporters for so generously providing raffle and competition prizes, food, venues and funding support. Finally if youd like to get more involved in fundraising at Perranporth SLSC, have suggestions or ideas, or if your company or organisation is interested in partnering with us, please dont hesitate to contact me.
