As a yardstick of faith and an icon of gentleness; as a teacher of
temperance, your actual deeds have declared you as being among
your flock. In this manner you gained by humility, things most
sublime, and through poverty earned true wealth. Father and our
hierarch St. Nicholas intercede with Christ our God that our souls
may be saved.

confers on us through the Spirit in baptism. Either sense is
consonant with the theology being proposed. Theodore of
Mopsuestia (Hom. 16, 22-23; c.420), expounds the same doctrine at
considerable length: The church herald cries: "Let us be
attentive!", and loudly prepares everyone to pay attention to what
is about to be said. The bishop exclaims: "The holy thing for the
holy ones," because this food is indeed holy and immortal, since
it is the body and blood of the Lord, and full of holiness because
the Holy Spirit has come down upon it. Not everyone partakes of
this food, but only those who have received the first fruits of the
Holy Spirit (Rom 8:23) in the rebirth of baptism, and thereby have

Holy things are for the holy! As late as the end of the 4th c.,
some commentators still understood the "holy ones" in the
Pauline sense: they are the baptized, who are holy because they
have received the Holy Spirit. Cyril/John
II of Jerusalem (Cat. 5, 19; post 380), interprets the exclamation thus:
After these things, the priest says: "The holy things for the
holy!" Holy are the offered gifts, for they have received the
coming of the Holy Spirit. Holy are you also, who have been
deemed worthy of the Holy Spirit. So the holy things pertain to
the holy ones. Then you say: "One holy, one Lord, Jesus Christ."
