Performance Notes for Beyond by Austin Kraft
In m. 2-4 of the cello part in Movement I, the standard notehead indicates the string that
is to be played, and the diamond-shaped notehead indicates the note that should be
pressed upon ever so lightly to produce natural harmonics.
In m. 6 of the cello part in Movement I, the glissando should be a slide in pitch from the
C to B-flat that takes place during the transition from the second to third beat rather than
a continuous slide taking place throughout the measure.
The strong, ringing vibrato mentioned in m. 6 of Movement I for both instruments
should carry on throughout all three movements of the piece.
At m. 22 and m. 36 of Movement I, the meno mosso results in a tempo decrease to
approx. 68 BPM.
= Bartk pizzicato; + = left-hand pizzicato
A small pause of two or three seconds should exist between the end of one movement and
the beginning of the next.
Each caesura throughout the piece should be implemented as a brief pause, only one or
two seconds, long enough for the performers to reposition themselves for the next phrase.
