capabilities include civil, mechanical, electrical and instrumentation engineering. Our

L&T Engineering Construction & Contracts (L&T ECC) which is an integral

part of L&T, has six decades of valuable experience in offering Construction &
Engineering services. L&T ECC has developed expertise in executing complex projects
involving comprehensive engineering services on turnkey basis. L&T ECC is the only
construction company in India which can undertake contracts of large magnitude with
single source responsibility, offering civil, mechanical and electrical engineering
services both in Engineering & Construction.

L&T ECC had a collaboration agreement with Doka Formworks and

Scaffolding Company, Austria, one of the leading formwork suppliers in Europe, for
fabrication and adoption of their versatile system in India as L&T Formworks. Using
L&T formwork system, it is possible to achieve quality construction with economy and
speed.

L&T ECC has a special division for “Safety” in Headquarters, all Regional
Offices and all sites to take care of all safety aspects at sites.

We have carried out number of projects outside India and have worked for
many International Consultants. We have recently completed our work at Oman for a
Cement Project for which detailed engineering was carried out by us and was vetted by
the American Consultants.

Major portion of the jobs executed by us is with our own design. To offer the
design services, L&T ECC has separate engineering wing (for Civil, Mechanical &
Electrical) known as “Engineering & Design Research Centre” Division (EDRC) at
ECC Headquarters, Chennai. EDRC is well equipped with more than 1500
engineers/architects and more than 600 draughtsmen in all disciplines.

L&T ECC has vast experience in offering turnkey design services like
architectural, structural, plumbing & sanitary, air conditioning, fire fighting, electrical,
instrumentation works, etc.

The architectural section of L&T ECC has the capability to design building
structures like mass housing/townships, hospitals, industrial structures, public
buildings, factories, etc.

L&T ECC has got wide experience and expertise for carrying out most
economical structural design for various types of projects like cement plants, thermal
power plants, metallurgical projects, fertilizer projects, industrial structures,

Engineering Design and Research Centre (EDRC), the design arm of L&T,
provides comprehensive design, detailed engineering and consultancy services for
EHV/GIS/distribution substations, switchyards, project electrification, transmission

 Best Practices Award – 2005 to TLT Pondy

TLT Pondy‟s entry “On-line work-in-progress stage tracking system” was

adjudged as the best among various entries in the competition organised by
CII Pondicherry. The award was presented on March 23, 2005 by CII-
Southern Region Chairperson Ms. Shobana Kamineni

 Top Exporters‟ award from Engineering Export Promotion Council,

Western Region for its outstanding performance in Export of Civil
Engineering Services during the years 1977, 1983 and 1988

 National Award for outstanding work in Human Resources Management

from National HRD Network – New Delhi during the year 1988

 Industrial Promotion Award (a gold medal) for the year 1992 from The
Council for Industrial and Trade Development (CITD) for L&T‟s excellent
productivity and research and development

 RoSPA Merit Award for highest safety standards observed during the
construction of Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium at Madras in a record time of 260
days from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, Birmingham,
UK during 1993

 Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, Ratnagiri selected L&T ECC for the
“Quality Construction Award – 1002-93” for its outstanding performance
and superior quality construction work in Ratnagiri (South) in April 1994

 “Federation Internationale de la Precontrainte (FIP), UK Award for

outstanding structure – 1994” for the Administrative Office Building of
L&T ECC at Chennai and special mention of the multi purpose auditorium
at Hyderabad, both constructed by L&T ECC. This was presented during the
12th Quadrennial Congress of FIP at Washington SC, USA on June 2, 1994

and Development

 Safety Improvement Award for reducing the rate of injuries and illness from
American Society for Concrete Construction (ASCC) for the year 1997.

 Best Builder for the year 1999 from Builders Association of India –
Jamshedpur Centre.

 L&T ECC‟s Engineering Design and Research Centre building has won a
prestigious international award (special mention) instituted by fib
(Federation Internationale du Beton), the International Federation for
Structural Concrete as an outstanding concrete structure.

 Gold Award of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA),
UK for L&T ECC‟s excellence in occupational health and safety
performance achieved at its sites in TISCO Jamshedpur during a continuous
period of 4 years from January 2000 to December 2003.

 Businessworld‟s Most Respected Company Award 2003 in Infrastructure

sector conferred to L&T acknowledging the unchallenged position L&T has
carved for itself in the infrastructure business. Awarded to L&T on January
16, 2003 in Mumbai

 The Council for Fair Business Practices (CFBP) has presented L&T its
prestigious award – the Jamnalal Uchit Vyavahar Puraskar –2002 for fair
business practices. Awarded to L&T on March 26, 2003, in Mumbai, for
maintaining high ethical standards in all its business dealings, high quality
of products and services, emphasis on customer satisfaction and
commitment to social obligations. L&T was selected for the award in the
category of Manufacturer-Large.

 Businessworld‟s Most Respected Company Award 2004 in Infrastructure

sector conferred on L&T, acknowledging the unchallenged position L&T
has carved for itself in the infrastructure business.

 PHDCCI Award for Ethical Practices

The New Delhi based PHD Chamber of Commerce & Industry (PHDCCI)
conferred on L&T its esteemed „Ethics is Good Business‟ Award. The
award is an apt recognition of L&T‟s emphasis on adherence to ethical
practices in every respect of its operations and high standards of business
practices. The award was presented on December 10, 2004 in New Delhi.

 CII-Exim Bank Business Excellence Award 2004

The „Award for Business Excellence‟ instituted jointly by the Confederation

of Indian Industry and Export Import Bank of India conferred the
certification to L&T ECC on November 25,2004 in Bangalore.

 Business Today Award – 2005

L&T has been ranked among the „Best Managed Companies‟ in India in a
study conducted by Business Today. Mr. A.M. Naik, Chairman & Managing
Director L&T, received the award from Mr. Aroon Purie, Editor-in-Chief,
Business Today, at a glittering function held in Mumbai on March 11, 2005

 CII-Exim Bank Business Excellence Award 2005

The „Award for Business Excellence‟ instituted jointly by the Confederation

of Indian Industry and Export Import Bank of India conferred the
commendation certificate 2005 for „Significant Achievement‟ to L&T ECC.

 NDTV Profit Business Leadership Award

L&T won the NDTV Profit Business Leadership Award in the Infrastructure
category, and was cited for playing a crucial role in the development of
infrastructure in India post-Independence. Mr. K. V. Rangaswami, Sr.
Executive Vice President (Construction) and Member of the Board,
accepted the award on behalf of the Company from the Prime Minister of
India the in New Delhi on Saturday, July 28, 2006.

About Power Plant Construction Capabilities

L&T sets up large utility power generation projects / independent power plants with
full compliance to international standards. It also offers a comprehensive range of
services to the nuclear power sector. This includes design, engineering, supply, erection
and commissioning of various equipments and structures.

L&T ECC has extensive experience in construction of power plants – coal / lignite
based thermal, gas-based simple / combined cycle, diesel, co-generation, and other non-
conventional plants. It undertakes turnkey construction of power plants including civil,
mechanical, electrical, instrumentation works and associated detailed engineering,
procurement and other related services.

Construction and erection services include:

 Survey and soil investigation.

 Site development works - levelling and grading, compound wall and fencing,
roads and drains, railway sidings, ash ponds, greenbelt and landscaping.
 Complete civil and structural works for power plant including equipment
foundations, powerhouse building, plant and non-plant buildings, township and
facilities.

L&T ECC offers turnkey services for various packages of power plant viz. natural and
induced draft cooling towers, single / multi-flue brick or steel lined chimneys, coal and
ash-handling systems, water and effluent treatment plants, compressed air / fire

instrumentation and transmission lines.

About Transmission Line Construction Capabilities

Turnkey construction of EHV transmission lines is a major area of operation for L&T.
Capabilities includes design, manufacture, supply and construction. With rich
engineering expertise earned over the past six decades and with high quality products
and services, L&T ECC has established niche markets in India, West Asia, Southeast
Asia, and South Asian Countries.

So far L&T has constructed approx. 9000 Kms of Transmission Lines for voltage
ranging from 66 kV to 400 kV. With ISO and OHSAS certifications for design and
development; purchase processes; transmission line construction; and tower-
manufacturing facilities in Pondicherry and Pithampur, L&T‟s transmission line
construction works have gone beyond Indian shores. Today, L&T has established niche
markets in Middle East, South East Asia and SAARC countries with high quality
products and services. L&T undertakes design, survey, supply, erection, testing and

The Design Cell is equipped with a number of CADD workstations and PCs in
LAN through server. L&T‟s design team has developed in-house software packages
from concept to optimisation levels, bringing total economy in tower configurations. It
has necessary resources to undertake route survey using global positioning system and
geographical information system (GIS) technologies. For more details, please see

Manufacture of transmission line towers

L&T has ISO 9001/ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001-certified tower

manufacturing facilities at Pondicherry and Pithampur, with an installed capacity of
36,000 MT per annum and 40,000 MT per annum respectively. We are in the process of
brown-field expansion of these factories. Both the plants are equipped with CNC lines
for fabrication of towers and microprocessor-based temperature controlled eco-friendly
systems for galvanization of tower members. A 40,000 MT per annum rolling mill at
Pondicherry, also ISO-certified, produces angles, providing backward integration. The
rolling mill also produces sections and reinforcement bars for customers on request. For

Testing of Tower – Test Bed Facility at Kancheepuram

L&T is in the process of constructing a state of the art tower testing station at
Kancheepuram, near Chennai (30 km from International Airport at Chennai). This
testing station with its sophisticated state of the art technology could be one of the
largest and best of its kind across the world. This tower testing station can test upto
1200kV square or rectangular base lattice tower, Monopole, Tubular structure & Guyed
tower. The facility is expected to be ready by Oct 2009.

conductors, insulators, and hardware

L&T has developed an excellent vendor base for sourcing of materials such as
conductor, insulator, hardwares, OPGW, etc., for transmission lines of all voltage

ratings both in India and abroad (Japan, US, Europe, Canada, Germany, China,
Malaysia, etc.). Utmost importance is given to quality and timely delivery while
choosing vendors. A strong vendor evaluation system giving due importance to quality,
timely delivery, cost and other parameters affecting customer service is in place and
imbibed in our Quality Management system.

Construction of lines up to 765kV including survey, foundation, erection,

stringing, testing and commissioning

L&T has dedicated, experienced construction teams to take up project execution

in India as well as overseas. We have many experienced PMI and IPMA certified
Project Managers who are able to finish the toughest jobs within set boundaries of
Time, Budget and Scope. The successful commissioning of a 400kV line in the
toughest Himalayan Ranges speaks of the organisation‟s expertise in this field. Our
experience spans different terrain conditions, soil conditions and climatic conditions. A

Other Fields

The transmission line tower factories also supply hot dip galvanized products like wind
energy structures, metal beam crash barriers for highways and Telecom Lattice Towers.
