CHAPTER ONE ?
The Conscious Observer PURPOSE
My primary purpose for writing this book is to share with you the discovery of my Spirit true-self, which I believe will provide you with an understanding of who truly are, in the spiritual sense, and how the consciousness within you can help you to co-create joyous experiences in your own life. You will discover that, who you think you are, is actually an egoic false-self personality pretending to be youwhose only interest is ensuring you survive and procreate. This is not a book that reveals the secret to having anything you want. On the contrary; its about giving up the search for happiness through wanting and having and finding joy and peace by experiencing all that which you desire most. As you read you will discover how conscious observation works to allow you to fulfill your true purpose in life; which is to awaken, and expand and experience in harmony with the

E.J. Lister

expanding universeyour inner purpose. You will learn to cocreate your own reality; to manifest unconditional love; to live without fear; to establish a new career; start a business; expand a natural talent be it artistic, athletic or academicyour outer purpose. The desire to find joy and peace in my own life led to the creation of this book through a combination of research and experience. My desire to help others quickly developed into a passion, which then produced this book through creative realization. No formal education or degrees support my theories; I relied strictly on research and personal experience in my writing and in my illustrative theories. What I hope to demonstrate to you is this: regardless of who you are (or who you think you are), or what you believe inin terms of selfworthyou can find joy and peace in a life of magical creation where addictions, lying, cheating, fear, guilt and resentment are non-existent. It matters not whether you are educated, wealthy, black, yellow, white, handicapped, or any other label you think you are worthy of. God/Consciousness does not discriminate; your Spirit true-self is waiting for you to co-create all that which it desires most. The process of finding my Spirit true-self wasnt easy. To be honest it was quite challenging; I still journal each day to keep myself conscious of what Im creating. Its a difficult, non-

The Conscious Observer translucent processtrying to remain in awareness, to live in the present momentgiven the fact that we are all distracted by 60,000 thoughts per day, plus numerous obligations and commitments, not to mention the egoic false-self voice in the head incessantly talkingmost of which is negative and counterproductive. Add-in the fear-factor of letting go of

attachment to transient things and expected outcomes and youve got a recipe for existing, rather than a formula for living. This is why its important to find time in your day to consciously observe; to be in awareness of who you truly are and know the magical power you possess to generate your own joyful experiences; realities that you, your Spirit true-self, create. And I assure you, anytime my egoic false-self crept into the creation of this book I immediately shut it down through conscious observation. I know from experience that desire + passion + consciousness and energy [Source/God] are the only true ingredients in the creation of joyful experiences. I write with enthusiasm, thereby opposing time and space, allowing my inner-purpose to align with my outer-purpose, that is to say, to allow my Spirit true-self to connect with the Universal Source of Intelligence [God], allowing it to flow through me to create the experience of sharing with you my discovery. It is a joyous experience; one with no attachment or expectations; Ive learned much about my [self] through this creation. Knowledge and Wisdom

E.J. Lister

Like the hundreds of Spiritual and self-help books in stores today The Conscious Observer is meant to provide you with the knowledge necessary to live a joyous life. Unfortunately knowledge, in and of itself, is not enough to encourage you to change, or to provide you with sufficient comprehensible lessons required to practice; to acquire wisdom. To acquire wisdomknowledge put into practiceyou must first desire to change; a difficult thing to do, indeed. Why? Well, its back to that egoic false-self personality pretending to be you; it doesnt like change any more than it appreciates you reading this book. One only has to look at the diet book industry to see that people are hungry (no pun) for change in their life, however, many never succeed. Note: If you desire to change your current eating habits, to obtain your ideal body mass, you will succeed through conscious observation much more so than wanting to be thin while you stare into the fridge, searching for the last piece of chocolate cake you unconsciously ate last night. To make the most of this book you may wish to read through each chapter as you would a storybook. Then return to it and use it as a textbook manual as you may have done during educational studies. I am confident, based on my own experience that something in this book will lead you to an awakening, which in turn will set you on a path to

The Conscious Observer

enlightenment that you can never not know again. At this point, the moment of Ah ha I guarantee that you will never have to suffer again through the ups-and-downs of lifethe happy/unhappy cycle that unconscious wanting and having produce. Instead youll find yourself living with joy on a more even keel.

Enjoy the journey

I UNDERSTAND
I understand you desire a loving relationship and good health, joy and peace, financial independence, a rewarding career, adventure and romance. I understand you want to be happy. I understand you need shelter and clothing, food and transportation, and therefore you have to work. I understand youve had your share of ups-and-downs, wins and losses, disappointments, and moments (or days) of struggling with a problem, and I understand youve had moments of bliss, and been thrilled with a positive outcome. I understand youve cried, laughed, and been afraid, experienced moments of resentment, guilt and jealousy; and I understand youve asked on more than one occasion: why am I not happy? I understand this because, like you, I am human. I too have experienced much of what you have experienced in your lifetime. And like you Ive searched for answers; weve probably read the same Spiritual and self-help books, watched the same inspirational movies, perhaps weve even attended the same motivational seminars Something else I understand, that you may not be aware of, yet, is that you are not who you think you are; you are a magical being with unlimited power to create whatever it is you desire. I understand this because I have experienced the magic of creation through conscious observation. I have let go of

The Conscious Observer

wanting and having. I have let go of attachment to materials things and followed my hearts desires. I have found joy and peace in loving someone, unconditionally. I understand how it feels to be fearless. I and understand you too can overcome any obstacles or set-backs you perceive as holding you back from achieving what it is you desire most.

MY STORY
For the greater part of my life I lived in a time paradox known as Present-Hedonistic1, which, among other things, meant I had very little ego and emotional control. I lived in the Now with very little thought of future consequences; self-gratification and pleasure were unconscious motivators. My Leo personalityan extroverted, creative and entertaining characteronly added to the challenge of living in the moment; which is not at all like being present. Although I was always capable of earning a good deal of money, I never saved any of it. Money fueled my egos wanting, which eventually led to addictions as I cycled in and out of the happy/unhappy states. Eventually my past became littered with failed relationships and debt.

Present-Hedonistic: a hedonistic risk-taking attitude toward time and life. Pleasure seeking, self-gratifying, spontaneous-idealist, no concept of future or consequences of decision-making; living in the now, easily bored.

E.J. Lister

After more than 50 years of living unconscious and making a mess of my life I was ready to give up; I wanted peace in my life and for the longest time I thought dying the only way I was going to get it. There was, however, an alternative; I could change. But Id tried that hundreds of times before, only to go back to doing something regretful. I even considered running away to a remote beach and living-off coconuts and dried fish; some place where there would be no access to money, cigarettes, wine, beer or sex. Of course, I knew, delaying gratification, and refraining from habitual activities can easily be controlled by limiting access; however, it would not stop the wanting and the craving that addictions produce. There was a bright side, however; my character personality does have a creative, entertaining side to it that always seemed magical. I have the ability to inspire and to make people laugh; and the ability to create presentations and training materials and deliver them with confidence. I coined the word Edutain to describe how I could educate people by entertaining them, combining stories with my training materials, and with very positive results. This side of me I liked, often using this as an excuse not to change for fear of losing a part of my character that made me feel good. What I didnt know at the time was that this side of my character personality was my Spirit true-self, which, as I know now is completely separate from my egoic

The Conscious Observer

false-self personality (a.k.a. Astrological Personality and the Mind-Made little Me). This was my awakening, so to speak; a brief period when I separated myself from who I thought I was, and consciously observed who I am really. What I found was the person that others had seen in me; the person I had not been able to see for myself, let alone accept. Id always wonder why it was that people seemed to like me when I was such a screw-up; this was my egoic false-self personality talking (the Mind-Made little Me). Gradually, I was able to identify with that voice in the head and learn to soften its feedback, and eventually I was able to recognize how dysfunctional my egoic false-self personality was, and why I wasnt able to find peace in my life. The MindMade little Me wasnt interested in peace; it was only interested in survival. Rewind to 1995 In the spring of 1995 I was five-years into my second marriage with two young children, making child-support payments for three children from a previous marriage. I was working as an Industrial Electrician, trying to pay a mortgage on a house I spontaneously built to keep up with the Jones driving a used Hyundai that Id purchased for cash after being forced to sell a Ford 4x4 that Id leased two-years earlier. At the time I had two credit cards that I was using to purchase fuel for my daily

10

roundtrip, ninety-minute commute to work. Eventually the credit cards were being used for groceries and a mountain of overdue bills. Although at the time my situation seemed hopeless I continued to believe that I had the talent and desire to make it. When a position was posted at work for a Planner, something inside me told me to apply; I had no idea what a Planner was, let alone where the voice was coming from. I went into the interview prepared and positive; I knew the position was mine, although I didnt know why I knew (I believe now that my sub-conscious was leading me toward something I desired, even though at the time I didnt believe in God, Spirit or the ability to create my own reality). I aced the interview. The position did not pay any better than my previous one, in fact it paid less. I was happy, however, as it did provide me with a new challenge and the ability to use my creative ability. I learned a great deal about myself during the first ninemonths; then, just as I thought I was going to make it the bank began to call, threatening to foreclose, and my wife was angry that I wasnt looking after her and the children. For fear of losing everything I quit the Planning position and went back on the tools, working at a dirty coal mine twelve-hours/day, far and away from home (I didnt want the bank calling, and I did not want my wife to be disappointed).

Alone now, living in a dirty hotel room, working a job I did not enjoy, I began to spiral, drinking each night to ease the pain. The unhappiness was all-consuming, affecting everything I was attempting to do. Then, after one particularly rough night on the town I awoke in the morning to the realization that I could not go on pressing the Repeat button, as it were. So I pressed the Go button, and quit that job. The eight-hour drive home, down the Banff-Jasper highway through some of the most scenic Rocky Mountain ranges in Canadagave me a chance to think (what I know now was actually creating, visualizing, intending, and desiring). Before I arrived home that night I had devised a plan; Id start my own consulting business; after all, I was a born-leader, with knowledge of project planning. Fast forward to 1998 My dream materialized (I should say, my desire manifested). My marriage, however, disintegrated, leaving me alone again to sell the house after my wife took the children and moved across the country to be with her mother. It was the forth house Id lost to relationship breakups in less than twenty years. Although my business was doing well I was once again homeless, with very few processions, living in a hotel room. This time, however, I was inspired to achieve success; the

12

success that comes from living with joy. My intention was to remain in Western-Canada, regain my health and stabilize my finances. Once again, through visualization, desire and passion I began to create a new reality for myself, and within days, literally, I met the most amazing woman in a cowboy bar who, after a night of dancing, a three-hour phone conversation and an evening together at her house offered to let me move in with her. Through the days and months that followed we lived a joyous and peaceful life; cooking, horseback riding, traveling, attending theater productions, and falling in love (something Id never really experienced before, Im sad to say). As the relationship grew we invested our money and made plans to build a horse ranch on Vancouver Island (the night we met, September 4, 1999, her 44th birthday, shed asked me if I could build a barn, which of course I could, given that Id already constructed two). I promised to build her the most beautiful horse barn ever, which I did; we called it Runaway Ranch, a name that had a joyous meaning to it in the beginning; one that would eventually have a tragic meaning as the years passed. Fast forward again to 2005

The Conscious Observer

13

While Toonie (nickname) stayed on the ranch to look after our horses (shed retired from her career as an RCMP2 constable) I continued to travel with my consulting business. It wasnt long, however, that my present-hedonistic personality, and my egoic false-selfs need for companionship found pleasure in women, entertainment and drinking; I was living a completely unconscious life again, believing everything that my egoic false-self voice-in-the-head was telling me. For the next six-years I traveled from job to job, hotel-room to hotel-room, relationship to relationship, and all the time spending money and accumulating debt. In the meantime, Toonie looked after the ranch and her two aging horses. I continued to support her financially, and she continued to support me emotionally (God only knows why). When things got so bad for me financially, and emotionally (I owed the government for unpaid taxes and had several credit card debts, which I couldnt maintain) Toonie let me return to the ranch to stabilize. My only hope at that time was to find an overseas position that paid well enough for me to recover from my present-hedonistic character of the past; I visualized working in Madagascar and within months the call came in.

Present Time Following my Madagascar hitch I returned to the ranch to help Toonie pack it up; the horses had passed and the ranch had been sold. It was a difficult experience. Unfortunately Toonies life had hit an all-time low and she quickly began to spiral into a depressed state (her egoic mind had convinced her that she had lost everything; that she was now worthless. And no matter how much we worked together to remain conscious of the illusion she just could not come to terms with it. She now resides with her aging mother and I have moved on to experience my next adventure as a Conscious Observer.

THE CONSCIOUS OBSERVER

Is there really a secret to attracting whatever it is your heart desires? No; not really. What I mean is, its not a secret. Its more like a state-of-mind; a conscious state of mind. And simply by observing, that is to say, getting to know who you truly are, you can learn to manifest all that which you desire most in life: health, wealth, adventure, romance, and most importantly something creative and enjoyable to do. Conscious Observers are those individuals who have mastered the skill of separating themselvesto be more precise, their

The Conscious Observer

15

selves. Whether through a life changing experience, or a burning desire3, they awoke from the sleepy unconscious human state of the day-to-day struggle to survive and discovered that they werent their body, and neither was their body theirs. In other words, they discovered that who they thought they were, e.g., John Doe, husband, father, brother, carpenter, son, artistic, owner of stuff, and financially secure wasnt who they really were at all. It was the strangest thing, one Conscious Observer recalled. I could actually see who I was not. By eavesdropping on their mind and observing cause and effectsubjective and objectiveConscious Observers uncovered what millions of people have wondered since the beginning of time: there is a non-physical self, made up of energy and information inside our physical body. The common term for this non-physical self is: Spirit (Spiritually speaking); or Soul (religiously speaking); or Consciousness (scientifically speaking). Regardless of what name it is given everyone agrees that it is separate from our physical self and that it is a source of vibrating energy and information connected to an omnipotent Source of intelligence (God).

Desire is a product of the Conscious Observer and Spirit Personality, as opposed to the bodys needs, or the egos wants (refer to Chapter 2)

16

E.J. Lister

The most important discovery, however, wasnt duality of self (ego/Spirit); it was the discovery that consciousness creates reality, and that the Spirit true-self (I) has everything to do with the fulfillment of desire. Furthermore, desires, wants and needs could now be understood as fundamental to the Spirit-self, the ego-self (me and my mind) and the physical body. The energy connection between the Conscious Observer and the Spirit true-self is where the magic of creation occurs, and the Conscious Observer has the ability to create whatever he or she desires. Whereas the unconscious ego false-self uses effort to get what it wantsand it often never succeeds in getting it; even when it does succeed, it typically isnt happy, at least not for long. Unconscious living is what most humans do. I refer to this as: existing. This is when your life is controlled by that voice in your head; the voice that most people believe is who they are the me that generates thoughts of procreation and survival; it uses fear to get what it wants, and what it wants is control of your life to make sure you do procreate and survive. The fittest of our species have very powerful egos that can attract a strong mate, accumulate possessions, or control their environment, and who can generate fear in others. So wanting is as natural to us as breathing. But its not healthy, and its not going to make you happy. It only serves to make the ego stronger so it will

The Conscious Observer

17

continue to generate thoughts of wanting, and making us fear that if we dont have enough we wont survive. What the ego doesnt want you to feel is the burning desire for peace of mind that every single one of us experiences from time-to-time during quiet moments of reflection or contemplation. During those brief moments you are actually observing consciousness. But without understanding it, or becoming aware of it, the ego soon takes control of your life again.

The illustration above demonstrates how desires, wants and needs are objects of Spirit, mind and body and how the

18

E.J. Lister

Conscious Observer is in awareness; that is, in touch with his true-self desires and conscious of his egoic false-self wants. The magic is created by allowing the Spirit to fulfill its desires, which, as you learn to consciously observe, will manifest into reality without the resistance or interference of the ego. This illustration forms the basis for this book. The following highlights what will be covered in detail in the remaining chapters. Body (needs) Your body is what makes you human, in the physical sense. The human body consists of close to 100 trillion cells, the basic unit of life. Each and every cell in your body is a manifestation of the God/Source consciousness + energy, which instructed your parents protoplasm (egg and sperm cells) to multiply upon conception and create the physical you. This was your Spirits desire, to manifest into matter in the form of you to experience and expand as part of the universal expansion itself. How you look, when you were born (Astrological Zodiac Sign), and where you lived was decided on by your Spirit before conception, customized to suit the nature of its desires. There is a purpose; never wish you looked different, were born under another zodiac sign, or lived elsewhere. If youre overweight, or otherwise unhealthy, its entirely possible that your egoic false-self personality, with its addictive behavior,

The Conscious Observer

19

has created that. You can undo all that with desire. If youre handicapped in any way, whether from birth, or accident, or a breakdown in biological functioning, that too can be managed with desire. Surprisingly it takes very little to survive as a human on this planet. Most of what we need is already provided, or readily available. It is only the want of something else, above basic needs, which creates the perception that it takes a lot of effort to survive. The truth is most of us could get along fine by working two days per week if we were only to ensure our survival. The rest of the time we could spend experiencing joy by creating, loving, giving, playing or learning. Unfortunately most humans are not satisfied with doing this due to their egoic mind always wanting to be important, wanting more stuff, which of course is the pursuit of happiness gone mad. Beads (aka money or something to trade) Companionship Mind (wants) Your mind is made up (no pun) of a conscious life-force (energy) inherent with the gray-matter of your brain. The second is the unconscious intelligence programmed to help you survive; providing thought processes capable of releasing chemicals and producing emotions and fight or flight responses. Pain and pleasure are its main focus. During your lifetime you will develop an Ego whose single intent is to ensure you are strong enough to survive; and it does this by creating pleasure through wanting and having. The more I have the greater my chance of survival. This is your false-self; the Me that you think you are. Addictive behavior is a result of constant wanting, and cycling through periods of happy and unhappy states. All your Ego thinks about is survival; the paradox is: it will kill you to survive. Wanting & Having Companionship Spirit (desires) The non-physical part of you, your Being, most often referred to as your Spirit is a source of consciousness and energy (life), connected to the God/Source universal consciousness and energy, and therefore, connected to everything in the universe. THE MIND/BRAIN MAP

Some people believe their mind and brain are synonymous; that their intelligence and memory are tied to mind activities non-physical thinking and thought processes, while sense perceptions (sight, smell, sound, taste and touch) are linked to

22

E.J. Lister

brain functioningelectrical and chemical processes. Most people, however, pay no attention to their mind, or their brain; they simply go-about existing as human beings, experiencing the same emotional stimulus and responses that make them feel safe (a.k.a., egoic false-self, unconscious existence). If you truly desire to experience life, to experience joy, you must understand the workings of the brain, and the mind associated with it. In the illustration (Figure 1.3 The Mind/Brain Map) youll see how Ive divided the brain into quadrants: Processor, Protector, Professor and Projector; including the Hypothalamus.

This concept is meant to demonstrate to you that your brain is a primary organ of your body that functions on two levels. The
