MECHANICAL DESIGN. ENGINEERING Prerequisite Nil

(Use of approveddata book permitted) PURPOSE To study the basic design principles and apply the principles to the design of various elements encounteredin Mechanical machinesand structures. INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES On completion of this coursethe studentis expected 1. To designsimplejoints, fasteners, leversand springs. 2. To determinethe strengthofthe components 3. To determinethe failure conditions and apply them to real life problems F'UNDAMENTALS OF MECHANICAL DESIGN 9 Basic Definitions - Phasesof Design - Types of Loads. Types of stresses: Normal, shear, and combined stresses. Criteria for Design: strength, contact fatigue, stiffrress, wear resistance, vibration resistance, heat resistance, reliability. Brief outline of engineeringmaterialsand theoriesof failure. Exhaustiveproblem solving in Basic Design with memberssubjectedto simple stresses and combined stresses under uniform loading. DESIGN OF JOINTS (without eccentricloading) 9 Design of cotter joints and knuckle joints. Design of bolted joints. Design of riveted joints, welded joints and its applicationto pressurevessels. PARTS SUBJECTED TO ECCENTRIC LOADING 9 - cranehook - Frames, Eccentricloadingon rivets and bolts.Eccentricloadingon welds.Curvedbeams clamps.
