MICROPROCESSORS Asst. Prof. ANAND R e-mail: anand.r@cmrit.ac.in Description: We know that a microprocessor is the CPU of a computer.

A microprocessor can perform some operation on a data and give the output. But to perform the operation we need an input to enter the data and an output to display the results of the operation. So we are using a keyboard and monitor as nput and output along with the processor. !icroprocessors engineering involves a lot of other concepts and we also interface memory elements like "#!$ %P"#! to access the memory. A study of architecture$ interfacing and machine language programming for microprocessor&based systems emphasi'ing to engineering applications of microprocessors and microcontrollers. Course prere uisites: (he Students are e)pected to have the following topical knowledge upon entering this course* Satisfactory completion of basic digital electronics courses. Computer #rgani'ation and +ogic ,esign concepts are desirable. -nowledge about the +ogic design components like +ogic .ates$ !ultiple)ers$,emultiple)ers$ %ncoders$ ,ecoders$ Shifters and "egisters. /umbering systems 0Binary$ ,ecimal$ 1e)adecimal and #ctal2 Ability to convert decimal number into binary$ octal$ he)adecimal and visa versa !emory Units0"A!$ "#! and flash memories2 Ability to perform arithmetic operations in binary$ octal and he)adecimal.

Course Outcomes: (he specific course outcomes supporting the program outcomes are* 3. Students should be able to solve basic binary math operations using the microprocessor. 4. Students should be able to demonstrate programming proficiency using the various addressing modes and data transfer instructions of the target microprocessor. 5. Students should be able to program using the capabilities of the stack$ the program counter$ and the status register and show how these are used to e)ecute a machine code program. 6. Students should be able to apply knowledge of the microprocessor7s internal registers and operations by use of a PC based microprocessor simulator. 8. Students should be able to write assemble assembly language programs$ assemble into machine a cross assembler utility and download and run their program on the training boards. 9. Students should be able to design electrical circuitry to the !icroprocessor :# ports in order to interface the processor to e)ternal devices. ;. Students should be able to write assembly language programs and download the machine code that will provide solutions real&world control problems such as fluid level control$ temperature control$ and batch processes.
