Department of Sociology
Sociology explores the causes of order and the change in human societies by scientifically analyzing the structure and progress of a society as well as the characteristics of human beings. Sociologists understand individuals as both elements and products of a society. Therefore, a sociological perspective considers both individuals and their social contexts simultaneously in explaining all human behavior and social phenomena. The educational objective of this program is to offer students the sociological insight needed to scientifically analyze social phenomena through a variety of theories and research methods.
College of
SOCIAL SCIENCES
Department of Public Administration and Public Policy
The objective of the Department of Public Administration and Public Policy is to offer scientific and practical knowledge of public administration and policy to foster skillful public officials, political scientists, and democratic citizens to lead the community. With the advent of informatization and globalization, the societal demand for public administration experts is on a rapid rise. The Department of Public Administration and Public Policy responds to this growing demand by producing new talents for 21st century public service. Such talents are people who are not bounded by the inherent limitations of traditional public administration and who can actively adapt to the rapidly changing environment. The specific majors (TRACKS) within the department offer a more specialized education by instilling efficient organizational management skills and creative problem-solving abilities. Public Administration Major The Public Administration Major delves into the nature of national power and the macroscopic context of the policy-making process. It deals with diverse issues and themes centered on efficient, effective management and the structuring of public organizations such as the central government, local selfgovernment, and public institutions. We hope to respond to the social demands on public institutions by improving organizational management skills and expertise. The curriculum offers knowledge of organizational management, human resources management, resource distribution, and the management of strategic results. Public Policy Major The Public Policy Major examines the cycle of public policy - establishment, formulation, execution, evaluation, and the review of the policy agenda - to teach the macroscopic framework of national administration. In addition, it investigates the various issues and themes related to solutions for improving the quality of specific policies. As we plan to respond to industry demands for public administration, we are instilling expertise in individual policy fields, aside from the general field of policy studies. This program teaches environmental policy, industry policy, scientific technology policy, informatization policy, and welfare policy. It also helps students to acquire practical knowledge and skills related to advertising and public relations. This major teaches strategic planning, media planning, research, copywriting, visual advertising, and public relations. Its students also gain a broad knowledge of mass media, persuasion, and media effects.
The College of Social Sciences aims to teach students to acquire a broad theoretical background and research competence in the social sciences. It trains the students to be able to use various perspectives and research methods for analyzing social phenomena and policy making. Methodologically, the faculty seeks a balance between the quantitative and the qualitative research methods. The college includes many specialized classrooms and seminar rooms equipped with multimedia and computer terminals. A variety of special collections and educational facilities exist. The college is composed of the following three departments and two schools.
School of Communications
The School of Communications helps students understand the communication process by teaching the theories, concepts, and general ideas of communication. The areas within the field include mass communication, journalism, advertising, public relations, interpersonal communications, mass culture, and media industry. The school provides a broad education in the liberal arts and social sciences for the student because the study of communications is based on an understanding of the human mind, society, history, and culture. Students also acquire the practical knowledge and skills needed to be media professionals. The School of Communications offers two majors: Mass Media and Advertising. Mass Media Major Mass Media majors learn the role that the various forms of mass media - including newspapers, magazines, television, radio, film, and the new computer assisted media - play in society. Advertising Major Advertising Studies helps students to understand advertising and public relations as a whole. It also helps them to get the practical knowledge and skills needed in advertising and public relations. This major teaches strategic planning, media planning, research, copywriting, visual advertising, and public relations. Its students also gain a broad knowledge of mass media, persuasion, and the effects of the media.

DESIGN
Department of Industrial Design
The Department of Industrial Design contributes to society by creating a desirable modern life through competent and professional designers who can play a primary role in the advancement of the standard of living and national competitiveness. To achieve this goal, we provide future-focused educational programs such as art, scientific technique, and human culture, based on the inter-laboratory perspective. We also focus our programs to be well balanced with both the theoretical and practical aspects by using new medium. Through our educating process, students are prepared for modeling abilities, artistic sensibility, imaginative and expressive power throughout the fields of industrial, transformational, environmental, interior and exterior designs.
While other university design programs remained under their colleges of Fine Arts, our professors stressed the importance of design in choosing the department name Faculty of Design in 1975 and then College of Design in 1980. This set Kookmin University's design program apart from all others. Our determined design educators built a college with a new curriculum and teaching method based upon student experience and motivation. Today, too, we support each student's creative ideas and experimental concepts with open minds. Consequently, we are especially known for our teaching know-how. All of these efforts have formed the strong identity the College of Design has today. Department of Interior Design
The department of Interior Design at Kookmin University realizes the challenges that our living space will face in the coming years and has created an educational format that prepares students for the prospects of the future. One such method is to isolate the various design elements that permeate our living space and focus on each element. For example, interior elements may focus on colors, materials and textures, electronics, and lighting, while architectural elements would focus on commercial, recreational, and cultural spaces. The end result prepares future professionals capable of solving design problems in any given circumstance with clarity, understanding, and expertise.
Department of Ceramics
The study of ceramic crafts has the educational goal of fostering talented professionals who may lead the way in the cultural and industrial age of the 21st century. To do that, the Department of Ceramics aims to guide ceramic craftsmen to embrace this cultural age as we help students not only understand the history of Korean ceramic crafts and the current situation of international ceramics, but also have diverse experiences and improve their creative insight while developing educational programs appropriate for this digital age.

Also, we run customized curriculum to foster applying ability though focused practice teaching, acquisition of academic knowledge to meet the demands of increased society.
University education, along with its curriculum, lectures, and student support, should respond to the demands of the time. Transforming the subject-oriented education system, which many universities still maintain, into a student-centered one was accomplished by the College of Business Administration in 2006. We have reformed the curriculum in the major field of study so that our students can develop competence based on the confidence acquired in the earlier stages. The College is also investing its resources in international exchange program by which our students can utilize their specialized knowledge and familiarize themselves with international settings. This is the goal that we continue to achieve: to produce managers of the 21st century by means of institutional adaptability and flexibility.
Information Management Major Effective and efficient ways of applying information technology for business activities are taught to the students of the Information Management Major. Through the curriculum, which covers business modeling, IT strategy and consulting relevant to information systems, graduates are showing their competitiveness as IT firm managers equipped with knowledge in key IT technologies.
