TEXTS: 1. A GOOD bilingual dictionary (one that includes parts of speech and gives examples). On-line translators are often unreliable. 2. 501 Spanish Verbs 3. http://zeespanish102.blogspot.com/ [NOT ANGEL] [NOT ANGEL] [NOT ANGEL] 4. SMARTHINKING Online tutoring. Youve paid for ituse it! 5. Materials archived online (Google Drive, Scribd.com, Blogspot) for you to print out or access in class by laptop/tablet 6. Course packet available in the Arts & Sciences School office (286 Gordon Science Center). The cost will be approximately $25 and will be ready hopefully on Monday 27 Jan. OVERVIEW OF SPANISH 102 [ELEMENTARY SPANISH II] You have been placed in Spanish 102 because 1. Youve successfully completed Spanish 101 [at UC or elsewhere] 2. You have taken 3 years of high school Spanish with less than an A average 3. You have taken 4+ years of high school Spanish with less than a B average 4. It has been a number of years since youve taken Spanish but youre not a true beginner. If you feel that you have been incorrectly placed, please see me outside of class time. You may test out of 102 by taking and receiving at least a 75% on a 102 final exam. If 102 is proving too difficult for you, you may, with permission, drop down to a 101 class. WAIT A WEEK BEFORE DOING SO! DONT PANIC OR UNDERESTIMATE YOUR ABILITIES! Spanish 102 assumes that you are familiar with the material covered in 101: Greetings Titles Gender and adjectives [el, la, los, las] Days, months, seasons The present tense of regular, irregular, and stem-changing AR ER IR verbs Stem-change verbs The numbers from 0-1.000.000 Colors A + el--al; de + el---del Personal A Comparatives [ms que / menos que] and Superlatives [el ms] Idioms [expressions] with the verb TENER [tengo hambre, sed, sueo] Possessives [La clase de Paula vs. Paulas clase] The difference between SABER and CONOCER Some basic foods and drinks [other than la pizza, la pasta y el pollo]; table settings

Restaurant vocabulary [how to order] How to ask a question [Qu? Quin? Dnde? Cundo Cmo? Cunto? Por qu?] How to tell time [Son las tres vs. A las tres] The immediate future [ir + a + infinitive Vamos a comer a las 7:00] The present progressive--what is happening right now, [estar + -ndo: Ests leyendo] Affirmative and negative words [alguien vs. nadie, algo/nada, siempre/nunca, etc.] The reflexive verbs--an action that you do to yourself; includes a reflexive pronoun [Me levanto a las 6:00] Parts of the house [rooms, furniture, etc.] Family members Demonstratives [este, ese, aquel] The difference between SER and ESTAR What doesnt look familiar to you is easily found on-line and in reference materials. I will include links to helpful websites and podcasts on the class web page. Which is not on Angel. CLASS BEHAVIOR AND EXPECTATIONS: 1. Be on time. Arriving late is rude, disruptive and disrespectful to me and to the rest of the class. 3 late arrivals equals 1 absence. 2. Spanish is a spoken language and the only way for me to know if and when youre speaking is if youre here in class. Therefore there is an attendance policy: * you have 3 unexcused absences [excused absences are for College-sanctioned events and must be accompanied by prior notification.] * after 6 absences (2 weeks) I reserve the right to automatically fail you, and you should drop the class. * If at the end of the semester you have perfect attendance, 3 points will be added to your overall grade. 3. CELL PHONES OFF!!! LEAVE IT VISIBLE ON TOP OF YOUR DESK. If I see you texting, I will consider it an insult [since youre obviously not paying attention to me] and a testament to your rudeness and immaturity. PHONES MUST BE PLACED BY THE WHITE BOARD DURING EXAMS! I will suspect the worst if I see you with your hand between your legs during a test. 4. Cheating and plagiarism are serious offenses and will be punished accordingly--F/F for cheating on your transcript/vivisection [look it up]. DO YOUR OWN WORK! It will be painfully obvious to me, and embarrassing for you, if your bilingual friend has done your work for you, and you will not receive credit for that work. You also wont learn anything and isnt that kind of the point of doing the work? 5. NO GUM SNAPPING! It really gets on my nerves and it will probably cause me to subconsciously hate you and lower your grade. Why risk it? (And do I really need to explain a ban on chewing tobacco?) 6. Please come to class prepared, or stay home. You should have your books, paper, something to write with, the assignment should be completed and ready to hand in. If you missed the previous class, it is your responsibility to find out ASAP what you missed and what is due. Get the names, numbers and emails of several classmates. The assignments and work covered are readily available on the blog. WHICH IS NOT ANGEL. DONT EMAIL ME ASKING FOR THE ASSIGNMENT OR MATERIAL COVERED. THAT S WHAT THE NON-ANGEL BLOG PAGE IS FOR. 7. Falling asleep in class is the same as being absent and will be penalized accordingly. You may also be made fun of, possibly decorated, and left behind at the end of class.

8. Never ever ever ask either of the following 2 questions: Did I miss anything last class? or Did we do anything important in the last class? OF COURSE YOU DID/ WE DID!!! Do you think we just sat there waiting for you to show up?? It was your responsibility to find out BEFORE class what you missed. Check the non-Angel blog. (This holds true for all of your professorsif you want to annoy them, ask them one of those two questions.) 9. To keep things interesting, you will working in assigned groups. These groups will be reconfigured over 2 weeks or so. By the end of the semester, you should have had the opportunity to work with everyone in the class. 10. My name is Professor Zee, Profesora Zee, Profe Zee or Dr. Zee. I am not Miss Zee, Mrs. Zee or yo, Zee. Once you have your degree you can call me Linda. 11. I have a somewhat dry, somewhat snarky, somewhat obnoxious sense of humor. Get used to it. GRADING Please dont tell me [or any other professor for that matter] what grade you need. If you need a B, do the work and get a B. We dont give grades. We add up the points of the work that youve done. At the start of the semester, you have ZERO because you havent done anything yet. In other words, you earn an A, not lose it. And if you do nothing all semester, you stay at zero. EXAMS: 40% (2 @ 20% each) WRITTEN WORK: 20% (homework sheets, vocabulary lists, in-class writing, etc.). Homework will be assigned and sometimes collected, sometimes corrected in class. BE PREPARED. PRUEBAS: 20% 8-10 brief quizzes, on Fridays. The material will be announced in the class prior to the quiz. PRESENTATIONS: 20% You will be doing three different group presentations. The first is a Pecha Kucha presentation on a Latin American country (20 slides, 20 seconds per slide.) The second will be a brief skit that you will write and then perform in class. The third is in place of a final exam. You will create a 15 minute film or performance continuing the story of Extr@ that will be watching throughout the semester. More info to come. GRADE DISTRIBUTION: A 93+ A- 90-92 B+ 87-89 B 84-86 B- 80-83 C+ 77-79 C 74-76 C- 70-73 D+ 67-69 D 64-66

TENTATIVE SCHEDULE: Subject to modifications and revisions In bold is what will be covered in class that day. In italics, is what you will be responsible for studying, learning, preparing prior to class. The worksheets and grammar explanations in the class packet should make the material clear to you. I will also provide links to helpful websites and YouTube videos (such as www.senorjordan.com or www.youtube.com/user/tontitofrito ). The links will be on the class website and at times on Google Drive. CHECK YOUR EMAIL SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. IT IS THE MAIN FORM OF COMMUNICATION AT UTICA COLLEGE. The grammatical information will not be taught in a

traditional sense; you will study it before class in order to work with it during class. I will of course answer any questions that you might have, but I will not be presenting the basics. Come to class prepared if you dont want to embarrass yourself. Most classes will start with a video covering some type of cultural material from the Spanish-speaking world. I will begin the video at around 9:25 or whenever I arrive and have successfully activated the equipment. This gives you something to look at as everyone is arriving and settling in. On Wednesdays we will watch an episode of Extr@ and then work with material related to the episode. YOU SHOULD LOOK AT THE PAGES DEDICATED TO THAT EPISODE PRIOR TO CLASS IN ORDER TO BETTER UNDERSTAND THE VOCABULARY AND EXPRESSIONS USED, AND THE CONTEXT IN WHICH THEY ARE BEING USED. In italics, is what you will be responsible for studying, learning, preparing prior to class. In bold is what will be covered in class that day.
