%he Master in Public Health &MPH' offered b# the Dow Uni"ersit# of Health Sciences &DUHS'( )arachi is a two #ear post *raduate de*ree pro*ram+ %he MPH de*ree is the most widel# reco*ni,ed professional credential for leadership in public health+ %he pro*ram emphasi,es acti"e( student directed learnin*( problem sol"in*( and the ac-uisition of skills essential to the practice of public health+ %he applications of this field of knowled*e are enormous+ Public health ph#sician are health scientists better understand the impact of chronic illnesses such as coronar# arter# diseases( cancers( hepatitis and diabetes on our population and help in detectin* new and emer*in* health threats+ %he pro*ram is tailored to understand in depth knowled*e of epidemiolo*#( biostatistics( health ser"ice administration( .n"ironmental health( communicable and non communicable diseases etc( and their application in anal#,in* the ma/or public health issues worldwide with more emphasis on de"elopin* countries particularl# Pakistan+

Ob e!"#$e% o& "he program'

%he o"erall ob/ecti"es of the MPH pro*ram are$ %o pro"ide trainin* in public health to -ualified health professionals and to other indi"iduals whose prior trainin* and e0perience prepares them to pla# a leadership role in public health+ %o adapt MPH trainin* to the di"erse back*rounds and anticipated future careers of students+ %o award the MPH de*ree to indi"iduals who ha"e ac-uired a particular depth of knowled*e in public health sciences and who ha"e demonstrated the followin* capacities to$ understand the distribution of ma/or determinants of health in populations( effecti"el# contribute to the mana*ement of health ser"ices( anal#,e risks and de"ise strate*ies for a healthier en"ironment( a safer workplace( and fewer in/uries( identif# wa#s in which chan*es in beha"ior and social structures ma# affect the health of populations+ %o lead students to achie"e these capacities in a communit# settin* that demands that the students -uer#( learn( persuade( and communicate in acti"e interchan*e with their peers( with facult#( and with practitioners outside the 1nstitution+
%o teach basic skills needed to criti-ue the medical literature b# pro"idin* a fundamental understandin* of .pidemiolo*# and Biostatistics %o pro"ide e0perience in desi*nin*( conductin* epidemiolo*ical studies and would be able to mana*e( anal#,e and interpret data+

%o de"elop inter"entions a*ainst the problems identified in research studies+ Program S"r(!"(re$ 1t2s a two and half #ear pro*ram( comprisin* of ! semesters+ All the course work will be scheduled durin* the three semesters( and the last semester is assi*ned for internship pro*ram and dissertation writin*3research+

Students of this pro*ram must$ i' 4omplete 12 re-uired credit courses for each&5' semester and 5 ,ero credit courses ii' 4omplete 6 7 weeks internship pro*ram iii' 4omplete and successfull# write and defend dissertation &10 credit hours' i"' Mini semester &! credit hours' Comp+e"e "o"a+ ,0 !re-#" ho(r%.

The%#% Re)(#reme*"%$
%he thesis is usuall# a pro/ect( which addresses well defined ob/ecti"es and3or h#pothesis+ %his ma# be either$ A' A small stand alone pro/ect in"ol"in* stud# desi*n( data collection( anal#sis and interpretation( or B' %he anal#sis and interpretation &rele"ant to ob/ecti"es' of either pre"iousl# collected data or data from a discrete subsection of an on*oin* pro/ect+

A student must complete their re-uired credit and non credit courses in two #ears+ %he internship pro*ram should be completed durin* the autumns break+ 1deall#( the thesis will be completed b# the end of the second #ear of re*istration+ %he thesis must be completed b# the end of the third #ear or the student will be withdrawn from the pro*ram+

%he uni"ersit# re"iew committee will re-uire a student to withdraw from the pro*ram if he3she is not makin* ade-uate pro*ress+ %his pro*ress include$ followin* the time line recommended abo"e( re*ularl# meetin* with the thesis super"isor and maintainin* a continued effort on the thesis research as well as maintainin* at least a B a"era*e in course work+
