Heimlich's Maneuvers. Is there Blood on the Award Committee's Hands?

From: "Robert . Barat!" M#" $h#" %&resident'ncah(.or)* #ate: +hu" ,- .an ,//0 12:1-:3/ 4/0// +o: Cincinnati Business Courier "Healthcare Hero" Award Judges: harron #iMario" .ohn M. Rice" $h.#" .ulie Is&hordin)" Barr5 Malinows6i M#" 7'dell 7wens Tonight the Cincinnati Business Courier will bestow its "Lifetime Hero Award" on Dr. Henry Heimlich for a lifetime of "achievements" in health care. Recently we wrote the Business Courier to uestion the !ro!riety of this award "co!y of email below#. $ur argument was that under even mild scrutiny Heimlich has been engaging in illicit research on humans for years. %e believe this includes a!!lications of the "Heimlich &aneuver"' es!ecially !romotion of use of this for drowning and asthma. The entire story of some of the illicit e(!eriments has yet to be told. The Business Courier did not include our concerns in their recent article' and these concerns remain. Heimlich has not !roduced evidence that any of his "studies" were legitimate' and relies on alleged case re!orts' attac)ing his critics' and bullying to advance his s!eculations. The data which refute accusations of misconduct have not been !roduced' but the evidence of the misconduct continues to build. A grou! of "s!in masters" "s!o)es!ersons# have attac)ed his critics' but have not !roduced the sim!le !a!ers that would !rove them wrong. *n the absence of such evidence' and considerable and growing evidence of wrongdoing' the obvious conclusion is that there was wrongdoing. The Business Courier wrote an editorial which claimed that the "good" done by someone was outweighed everything else' and +ustified the award. But it was the Committee that gave the award' not the Business Courier. The Business Courier !ut the burden of whether this award would be !ro!er on you. The +udges at ,uremberg did not give awards to the medical e(!erimenters they +udged. -ome of the information from the e(!eriments was uni ue and advanced )nowledge. However' medical authorities and medical +ournals won.t allow re!ublication' reference to' or teaching of any of the !hysiology or medicine learned from these e(!eriments' and rightly so. They were criminally wrong. Let.s consider a few things. #ishonest5 is not somethin) which 8uali(ies one (or a "hero" award. ,o matter how talented' do you really believe that a tenured full/!rofessor of engineering at a ma+or university could do the entire medical curriculum' and then an internshi! while maintaining his teaching !osition0 1ven if one could com!lete medical school under such circumstances' it defies imagination' and credibility' that one could com!lete an internshi! of any )ind without being full/time' es!ecially during the era in uestion. The em!loyment records and internshi! records from the 2ewish Hos!ital have not been !roduced. *nstead' it was claimed that an affidavit from Dr. Heimlich was !roof enough. The affidavit "readily available on the web# does not attest to the internshi!' only to )nowing the individual over several years' and that they were affiliated with the

2ewish Hos!ital. This was merely a "character" attestation' common in that era as one re uirement for licensure. How would * )now this0 * was a full time faculty member of a medical school from 3456/3478. Before * a!!lied for medical school * already had earned a DD- and 9hD "anatomy and cellular biology#' and taught full/time for ten years. * then matriculated as a full/time medical student' graduating in 3475. :rom 3475 to 3477 "2uly 3 to 2une ;<#' * was a full time intern in medicine. That consumed an easy 3<< hours a wee). * was !hysically in the hos!ital every ;rd night and every ;rd wee)end' all wee)end. Days went from 6=;< A& to 5 or 7 9&' e(ce!t when we were on call / those days went until > or 6 9& the ne(t day? $n the few hours off there was barely time to slee! and do laundry. This was standard fare for that era. -urgical@rotating interns' such as was claimed in the Heimlich situation wor)ed even harder than we did. :ull time sabbatical leaves are commonly and usually for 6 months from academic !ositions' not a year. There was no evidence that even this was done. *nternshi!s are always from 2uly to 2une' not -e!tember to August as claimed. A hos!ital would readily !roduce a certificate of internshi! and transcri!t of what was done for anyone who as)ed. -uch has not been forthcoming the Heimlich situation. The 2ewish Hos!ital could easily confirm the internshi! with em!loyment records' and other a!!ro!riate documents. $ne must as)' %hy ,ot0 %hether this was "years ago" or last year' it is serious business if someone is a !arty to misre!resenting credentials in any area of medicine. Illicit 9:&eriments on Human Bein)s *t is sim!ly not acce!table to conduct any form of e(!eriments on humans without oversight of an *nstitutional Review Board for the 9rotection of Human -tudies' and an ethical !rotocol. *n+ecting humans with blood from other !eo!le that had not been screened' and which contained a disease/ containing organism is not +ust ethically challenged' but criminally wrong. To do this in another country or in a cross/border scheme to avoid scrutiny is e ually criminal. There is no doubt that the "malariathera!y" e(!eriments were done. The attached document details that and more. -ee also this reference for further details. htt!=@@www.circare.org@malariothera!y.htm htt!=@@www.bioethicswatch.org@foia@lyme.htm ;ho is Holl5 Martins? * don.t )now who Holly &artins is' nor do * es!ecially care. *n the %atergate -candal the identity of "Dee! Throat" has yet to be made !ublic. ,o one attac)ed "Dee! Throat" since the information !rovided was accurate. The same is true for &artins. The documents collected s!ea) for themselves. *f "Holly &artins" is a family member' so what0 This isn.t an e!isode of ":amily :eud." *t is a detailed story of ethical and research misconduct. htt!=@@www.metroactive.com@!a!ers@metro@<3.<>.<>@heimlich/<><3.html htt!=@@www.metrotimes.com@editorial@story.as!0idA5<54 htt!=@@www.clevescene.com@cleveland@arsenic//old/lead@Content0oidA387433> He's an old )u5 4 we should <ust let this )o

%hen good !eo!le condone bad things they become a !art of those bad things. *n Boston a few years ago' three !rominent !hysicians' including a world/res!ected allergist' were each convicted of murdering their wives. All three were creative' and some would say brilliant. They also were criminals. They did not give a "Lifetime Hero" award to the allergist' who not only cared for hundreds of !atients but was also an academic luminary. The fact that someone is "famous'" well/)nown' or well/connected does not free them from ethics or immoral behavior. *f you fail to condemn illicit human e(!erimentation then you become a !art of it' and have blood on your hands too. * urge you to carefully consider whether you want to continue to be !art of this award' as the Business Courier has !ut the matter com!letely in your hands.
