ME 200 Exam 1 September 20, 2011 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

INSTRUCTIONS 1. This is a closed book examination. You are provided with an equation sheet and all needed property tables are provided. 2. Do not hesitate to ask the instructor if you do not understand a problem statement. 3. Start each problem on the same page as the problem statement. Write on only one side of the page. Materials on the back side of the page will not be graded. There are blank pages following problems 2 and 3 for your work. 4. Put only one problem on a page. Another problem on the same page will not be graded. 5. Label your system and list relevant assumptions for problems 2 and 3. 6. If you give multiple solutions, you will receive only a partial credit although one of the solutions might be correct. Delete the solution you do not want graded. 7. For your own benefit, please write clearly and legibly. Maximum credit for each problem is indicated below. 8. After you have completed the exam, at your seat put your papers in order. This may mean that you have to remove the staple and re-staple. Do not turn in loose pages. 9. Once time is called you will have three minutes to turn in your exam. Points will be subtracted for exams turned in after these three minutes.

First Name ___________________Last Name ____________________ Problem 1 (30 points) Show all work to receive credit. Do not solve (b) and (c) as practice for Exam-1 in Fall 2013 (a) Circle the conditions for which sufficient information is available to determine the state of water as pure substance. (6 points) P = 1 bar, T = 250C x = 0.5, saturated liquid-vapor mixture m = 2 kg, V = 0.1 m3 m = 2 kg, P = 1 bar, h = 2000 kJ/kg (b) A refrigerator in a hospital removes 40 kW of heat from a space used for blood storage. The coefficient of performance of the refrigerator is 8. What is the work (kJ) required to operate the refrigerator continuously for one day? (8 points)

(c) Consider a constant volume process of a gas in a piston-cylinder device during which gas temperature decreases. Circle the direction of heat transfer during the process assuming that changes in kinetic and potential energy are negligible and that there are no sources of work other than moving boundary? (6 points) Into the system Out of the system Insufficient Information

First Name ___________________Last Name ____________________ Problem 1 (continued) (d) A 9 m3 rigid tank has two sections (A and B) separated by a membrane, both of which contain nitrogen gas. Nitrogen gas in Section A has initial density of 1.667 kg/m3 and nitrogen gas in Section B has mass of 6 kg. The membrane breaks and nitrogen occupies the entire tank and its final density is 1.778 kg/m3. What is the volume (m3) of nitrogen that existed in Section A? (10 points)

First Name ___________________Last Name ____________________ Problem 2 (30 points) A well-insulated piston-cylinder device contains a gas at 1 bar absolute pressure occupying 1 m3 volume (state 1). At this state, the internal energy of the gas is 61.1 kJ. The gas is compressed slowly to an absolute pressure of 10 bar (state 2) such that PV = constant. During the compression process, an electric resistor within the cylinder receives a current of 8 A from an external battery of 6 V for a duration of 3 minutes. Do not solve (b) as practice for Exam-1 in Fall 2013 (a) Calculate total work (kJ) for the gas. (b) Determine internal energy (kJ) of the gas at state 2. Identify your system, list assumptions, and start with basic equations.

First Name ___________________Last Name ____________________ Problem 3 (40 points) A rigid tank contains 5 kg saturated liquid-vapor mixture of water at 100 kPa and quality 24.4% (state 1). Heat transfer occurs to the tank such that only saturated vapor remains in the tank (state 2). Do not solve (c) as practice for Exam-1 in Fall 2013 (a) Determine final pressure (bar) and temperature (C) of water. (b) Show the process for water on P-v and T-v diagrams. Label the states clearly. (c) Calculate heat transfer (kJ) during the process. (d) Added for Fall 2013 practice: Find specific internal energy (kJ/kg) for both states. Identify your system, list assumptions, and start with basic equations.
