following steel items: Buried steel piping Buried tanks Bottom surfaces of on-grade storage tanks in contact with soil. Interior surfaces of water boxes and tanks which are in contact with water.

Cathodic protection system is utilized for corrosion control of ferrous metals in contact with soil, buried concrete and water.

2.

DEFINITION Deep Well/ Deep Ground Bed - One or more anodes installed vertically at a depth of 15 meters or more below the earths surface in a drilled hole. (Bidder shall ensure there is no interference with RCC piles.) Electrolyte - Moist soil and water in contact with the structure. Parallel Bed - When used in the matters related to pipe, wire or cable type anode placed parallel to the pipe run. When used in the matters related to tank bottoms, wire or cable type anode in a coil or grid form in a plane parallel to the tank bottom at a specified depth under the tank bottom. Shallow Bed - One or more anodes installed vertically at a depth of 5 to 15 meters below the earths surface. Structure - The surface to which cathodic protection is being applied. A foreign structure means a surface to which cathodic protection is being provided unintentionally. Structure-To-Electrolyte Potential - The voltage difference between a buried (or immersed) metallic surface and the electrolyte which is measured with reference to an electrode (such as copper/copper sulfate and silver/silver chloride electrodes) in contact with the electrolyte. Surface Bed - One or more anodes installed horizontally or vertically at a depth of 5 meters or less, below grade.

6.2. 6.2.1.

Soil Resistivity Measurements Surface and Shallow Beds The number of measurements shall be determined locally using the following minimum spacing, and readings shall be taken whenever there are visual changes in soil characteristics. The site shall be marked off in a rectangular grid and readings shall be taken at each grid intersection. If two successive readings differ by a ratio greater than 2:1, an additional reading shall be obtained at the midpoint between the previous two readings. This shall be repeated until the readings meet the 2:1 ratio criteria. For each type of soil, readings should be taken in at least two different locations. At each location a minimum of two measurements shall be carried out.

6.2.2.

Deep Well Ground Beds Holes (or wells) drilled during geotechnical survey shall be used first, if possible, to test the ground bed resistance for deep wells. Otherwise, pilot holes shall be drilled to estimated depths indicated to be favorable from tests done for shallow beds. If water is encountered, the hole may be allowed to fill with ground water. If hole is dry, it may be filled with local water. A single anode may be lowered down the hole with a long lead which is connected to a buried structure in series with a battery and an ammeter. By measuring the current output at known power source voltage at intervals as the test anode is lowered, a profile of current output and anode resistance with depth can be developed. Soil resistivity shall be estimated by inputting the anode dimensions and anode resistance in the Dwight formula for single vertical anode.

Sacrificial anode beds Where the impressed current system is not economically feasible, such as at road crossings or isolated areas, zinc anodes may be used provided the soil resistivity is less than 1,500 ohm-cm and magnesium anodes if the soil resistivity is less than 3,000 ohm-cm. If the resistivity is more than 3,000 ohm-cm, the vendor shall submit a description of technical options to the contractor. The use of a sacrificial anode system may be considered, if the following conditions are met: If the pipeline (section) runs in low resistivity soil, water, swamps or marshes. On short pipeline sections, for economic reasons For temporary protection on newly laid pipelines. For temporary protection of existing pipelines, if pipeline isolation cannot be immediately installed. For localized (hot-spot) protection to supplement impressed current systems.

If cathodic protection by sacrificial anodes is selected, the vendor shall show by measurement and calculation that: The resistivity of the soil is sufficiently low to allow successful application of sacrificial anodes.
