Fr John‟s blog: http://caritasveritas.blogspot.com/ Parish blog: http://st-simon-parish.blogspot.com/ FR. JOHN’S DESKTOP On Wednesday the news media reported that Pope Benedict XVI will make a State Visit to Britain. This means that he will be coming at the invitation of Her Majesty the Queen and the British Government. When Pope John Paul II visited in 1982, it was a pastoral visit, i.e. at the invitation of the Bishops of the respective hierarchies (England & Wales, Scotland). At the time of writing there is no official confirmation from Buckingham Palace but „people‟ are talking about the visit taking place next September, possibly coinciding with the beatification of John Henry Cardinal Newman in Birmingham. Pope Benedict is known to have a keen interest in the life and writings of the late Cardinal Newman, probably the most famous convert from the Church of England to the Catholic Church. Let us pray that we may prepare well for this visit and that the visit will be a success. In the meantime, the relics of St Thérèse continue their tour of the country. Crowds are flocking to attend Masses in her honour and to have the opportunity of touching the casket containing the Saint‟s remains, in many places queuing throughout the night. If you have access to the internet, you can see pictures and reports at http://catholicrelics.wordpress.com/. So let us continue our preparation for the visit of the relics to Aylesford which is expected to be a huge event. The programme at Aylesford is on the notice board and can be downloaded from http://www.thefriars.org.uk/retreatpilgrim/Therese Programme.pdf. Copies are available in the church foyer for those who th th do not have internet access. If you would like to have a rose placed near the relics during the weekend of 9 – 11 th October for you or a loved one, orders must be sent to The Friars by 30 September. Forms are available in the church foyer. If you would like a seat on the coach to Aylesford, sign up as places are disappearing. If you plan to go by car, leave in plenty of time! th th The relics will also be at Westminster Cathedral 12 – 15 October. The schedule of services is on the notice board and is available via http://www.rcdow.org.uk/therese/. Entrance to services marked with an asterisk is by free ticket only. To obtain tickets either apply to the parish office or email Archbishop McDonald‟s private secretary Fr Philip Glandfield (aps@rcsouthwark.co.uk). The visit of St Thérèse‟s relics is a time of grace for us. St Thérèse‟s feast day is this Thursday. Why not make a special effort to come to Mass that day? Fr. John REGULAR EVENTS – COME ALONG!
