(b) Differentiate Zeigler Natta polymerization from normal addition polymeriza-

2. (a) What are the 2 methods by which a linear chain polymerization reaction can
be terminated? Explain them.
(b) What is the functionality of a polymer? Distinguish between a bifunctional
and trifunctional monomer.
(c) What causes a poly Ethylene molecule chain to have a Zigzag configuration.

3. (a) Give and Explain the important characteristics of a plasticizer. [4]


(b) What plasticizer would you use with the following and why?

5. (a) The common copolymer is produced by including both ethylene and propylene
monomers in the same chain. Calculate the molecular weight of the polymer
produced using 1 kg of ethylene and 3 kg of propylene giving a degree of
polymerization of 5000.
(b) The distance between the centers of the two adjacent carbon atoms in linear
polymers is approximately 0.15nm. Calculate the length of an ultra high
molecular weight polyethylene chain that has a molecular weight of 1,000,000
gm/mole. [8+8]

6. (a) How much formaldehyde is required to completely crosslink 10kg of phenol to


produce a thermosetting polymer. How much by product is evolved?

1. (a) What is the importance of plastics?

(c) What is a mer? What are the differences between a monomer and polymer?

(b) Is the glass transition, a well defined temperature or is it actually a range of
temperature? Why?
(c) When a transparent PET film is stretched slowly at room temperature it often
remains transparent; however when it is stretched at 130o C, it may become

3. (a) What are the various types of organic type of fillers. Give their physical prop-
erties, the characteristics that they display and their important applications.
(b) What are the different type of inorganic type filters. Explain their properties

4. (a) What are laminated plastics? State their properties and uses.

5. (a) Explain why is polyninylchloride scrap reusuable while the Bakelite scrap is
useless.
(b) What percent of sulphur would be present if it were used as a cross-link at
every possible point in polyisopxene (C5 H8 )
(c) Calculate the end to end distance of a long molecular chain of poly ethylene
having 500 mers in it. The bond length of C-C is 1.54o A. [5+6+5]

6. Many condensation polymers can be partially polymerized, stored after the reaction
is halted and then completely polymerized at a later date. Explain how this can
be done. Schematically show how the monomer concentration varies with time.

sulphur.

black. What fraction of the possible cross links are Joined by Vulcanization,
