UV RAYS ASSAULT THE EYES 365 DAYS A YEAR
Everyone knows UV rays are extremely harmful on sunny days,
yet they reach our eyes 365 days a year, even in cloudy weather.
We get more than 40% of UV exposure when we are not
in full sunlight.
UV LIGHT IS A MAJOR HAZARD TO THE EYE
UV light has a direct and cumulative impact on eye health,
accelerating eye ageing and the appearance of cataracts.
It is estimated that 20 million cataract surgeries are
performed every year.
Calculation based on urban workers in the Northern hemisphere

IS ESSENTIAL
(1) UV cut by transmission: 1.5 index cuts 95%UV, UHI indexes cuts 100% UV.
(2) % of total UV exposure received by eye without any protection. Up to 50% depending on lenses and tting parameters.
All clear lens materials cut
between 95%
(1)
to 100% of
UV rays passing through the
front of the lens.
All current AR lenses show high
reection of UV into the eyes.
Measurements have found that
UV reected from back surface
account for 10 to 50%
(2)
of
total exposure.
New Crizal Forte UV raises clear lens
UV protection to a new level, also
protecting against UV reections off
the back surface of the lens.

INTRODUCING BROAD SPECTRUM TECHNOLOGY
A new AR coating virtually eliminates UV reection into
the eyes while maintaining premium lens transmission.

(1) E-SPF developed by Essilor, endorsed by Karl Citek, OD, PhD, FAAO, Professor of Optometry, rst researcher to have published on the hazard linked to UV back surface reection.
(2) Short Wavelength Technical Report International Standard ISO 8980-3.
(3) Measures using average lens curvature (base 4) on a standard frame, identical for all measurements.
EXISTING 100% UV PROTECTION ONLY INTEGRATES UV CUT IN TRANSMISSION.
YET UV DANGER COMES FROM EVERYWHERE.
Essilor worked with independent 3rd-party
(1)
to develop a relevant protection index, based on
a series of experimental measurements, taking into account UV light coming from all directions.
Like the SPF index quoted on skin care products, the Eye-Sun Protection Factor is a ratio
between eye exposure with and without protection.
This global protection factor integrates:
- UV passing through the front surface of the lens and UV reflected by the back surface (a)
- Corneal sensitivity to UV and solar spectral irradiance
(2)
as UVA
and UVB do not represent the same danger for the eye
- Different positions of the sun, as in real life (b) & (c)
- Representative frame and lens parameters

E-SPF, APPROVED BY EXPERTS
UV reection on the back surface is a hazard which has been recently highlighted
by researchers. To evaluate and compare the lenses performance regarding UV
back surface reection, Essilor involved independent experts who examined and
approved the calculation method.
E-SPF Calculation and Measurements endorsed by Dr. Karl Citek OD PHD, FAAO.
Dr. Karl Citek, OD, PhD, FAAO, is a professor of optometry, known as the first
researcher to have published on the hazards linked to UV back surface reflection.
E-SPF= 25 for all Crizal Forte UV and Optifog with
Crizal UV, except with Essilor Orma
1.5 E-SPF=10.
* Best UV protection measured with E-SPF for Crizal Forte UV and Optifog with Crizal UV, compared to anti-reective clear and photochromic lenses with equivalent material.
Lenses performance only: E-SPF excludes direct eye exposure that depends on external factors (wearers morphology, frame shape, position of wear...). E-SPF measures: independent 3rd-party. USA 2011.
