Experiment Topic Proposal

Experiment Title: Effects of Familiarity on Preference Independent Variable: Chocolate Dependent Variable: Preference Subject: 40 FEU Students Experiment Plan: There will be 2 Boxes that the subjects will choose from. The first box contains familiar brands of chocolates where they can pick freely what chocolate they want. The second box contains folded papers that indicate the chocolates that they will get. The chocolate that they will get from the second box might be more expensive, or cheaper than those from the first box. Cover Story: We will inform the subjects that we will conduct an individual, interpersonal, and teambuilding activity. It's not necessary for the three activities to be connected or related to each other since the activities cover different aspects and elements. We will make such activities in order to condition their mind that all the activities we will conduct to them will be for a purpose and not just merely for fun.

First activity is about Interpersonal Relations. The activity we will conduct is called the "inner box, outer box". Second Activity is about Teambuilding. The activity is called Knowing Yourself, and Others. Third Activity is about the Self. This is the time when we will conduct the experiment. We will entitle the activity Self Preference We will let them pick individually between the two boxes. We will say words that will drive their curiosity for the mystery box to attain our goal

of manipulation.
After all of them have already picked their choices, we will distribute a Post-Activity Questionnaire which they will answer of why they have chosen the box of their preference. Manipulation: We will tell the subjects things that will drive their curiosity over the mystery box. Manipulation Script: There are 2 boxes here. The familiarity box and the mystery box. In familiarity box, you can pick freely what chocolate you want. These chocolates from the familiarity box are the familiar brands of chocolates in average prices. These chocolates are Kitkat, Kisses, and Toblerone. While in the mystery box, the content is random. Youll pick a paper inside the box which indicates the chocolate that you will get. You might get a cheaper chocolate or even a more expensive chocolate compared to the chocolates in the familiarity box. Some of the more expensive chocolates are: Cadbury, Ferrero Rocher, Lindt, Van Houten, etc... While some of the cheaper chocolates are: Chocnut, Chubby, Cloudnine, Hani etc The number of the more expensive chocolates is the same of those cheaper chocolates. Once you get your random prize, you can never repick again.

Post-Activity Questionnaire:

Where did you pick? In the Mystery Box? Or in the Familiarity Box?

Mystery Box Why in the Mystery Box? Because I really want to get the expensive one despite of the chance that I may get the cheap one. Because I just want a thrill and I enjoy risk-taking. Because I already know those foods/chocolates in the familiarity box and I want to try something new. Other Reasons: _______________________________________________________________________

How did you feel after you've picked in the box? ________________________________________________________________________

Familiarity Box Why in the Familiarity box? Because I don't want to risk myself picking the cheap one so I decided to pick something already familiar to me. Because I don't enjoy risk-taking, and I just want to be safe with my pick. Because I'm already contented with the food/chocolate in the familiarity box. Other Reasons: ___________________________________________________________
