ENGLISH III Research Paper Assignment Part #2: Research Paper Outline Quiz Grade, 2nd Quarter DUE

DATE: TUESDAY, DECEMBER 20TH 2011 ASSIGNMENT: You now have your raw material for your research paper. Your next step is to organize this material into the skeleton of your paper. You will create a formal outline for your research paper and turn it in for a quiz grade.
SAMPLE OUTLINE: TITLE I. A. B. II. A. B. 1. 2. a. b. i. ii. ___________________________________________________________________________ Rules for outlining: 1) If you have an I, you must have an II; if you have an A, you must have a B; etc. Each section must line up with all the other sections of equal importance (i.e., all As must line up with all As; etc.) 3) Your outline is an outline, not a rough draft. You may use either complete sentences, or incomplete sentences; but you should be consistent, and you should not have multiple sentences (or paragraphs!) in your outline. 4) Your outline does not require resources this is an organization of information you have already researched from the sources listed on your note cards. 5) Not everything that is on your note cards belongs in your outline only the biggest, main ideas belong in the outline. 6) The first letter of every point (A or 1 or i) gets capitalized, whether or not it begins a complete sentence. 7) Your outline must be typed and printed, and have the proper MLA heading.

History of gambling in America 1. Dates back to Colonial Times 2. Complicated, because illegal gambling has always been tolerated to an extent 3. Historically, has been tolerated more in certain areas of the U.S. 4. Bugsy Siegal, development of casinos in Las Vegas C. Current regulations regarding gambling 1. Regulated by individual states 2. Legalized in some way in all but 2 states II. Side 1: Reasons gambling should be legal A. Can be used to raise tax income for states B. Contributes to economic growth 1. Provides jobs for casino workers 2. Brings tourist business to an area C. Will happen whether or not it is legalized; the government may as well take advantage of it D. Can revitalize a poor area III. Side 2: Reasons gambling should not be legal A. Takes advantage of low-income people and those with addictive behavior patterns B. Leads to crime and immorality C. May be related to increased social and financial problems: 1. Increased filings for bankruptcy and welfare 2. High divorce rates 3. Increased suicides D.
