The course will be starting on February 6th and running for six consecutive sessions on Thursdays from 9:30am 2pm at 50 West High Street, Ballston Spa, NY 12020. Annies Project, created in 2003 by Ruth Hambleton, University of Illinois Extension, is an agricultural risk management program that is dedicated to strengthen womens roles in the modern farm enterprise. The curriculum is designed to empower women farmers in managing information systems used in critical decision making processes and to build local networks throughout the state. This program was recognized in July of 2011 by the White House, named as Champion of Change with Ms. Hambleton appointed to the White House Rural Committee. Ms. Hambleton has modeled her program after the life of her mother, Annette Kohlhagen Fleck, who was married to a farmer for 50 years before her passing in 1997. The 2014 offering of the curriculum boasts many new and exciting features for participants in New York. Women who participate will have access to the New York State Annies Project Website that not only provides information and updates, but also hosts a chat forum for interactions between classes. Current students and alumni can interact with those from their own class or other women in different regions of New York. Those interested in registering should contact Steve Hadcock at 518-380-1497 or seh11@cornell.edu or visit the website (www.nyanniesproject.org) to register. The course is $60 per person with limited scholarships available to those who inquire. The deadline for registration is January 10th, 2014. New York Annies Project has been made possible Cornell Cooperative Extension and by gracious funding from Farm Credit East, Workforce Development Institute, NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets, USDA Risk Management Agency, and the Northeast Center for Extension Risk Management Education. This material is based upon work supported by USDA NIFA (National Institute of Food & Agriculture) under award number 2012-49200-20031. Cornell Cooperative Extension provides equal program and employment opportunities. Accommodations for persons with special needs may be requested by contacting a Cornell Cooperative Extension CCE of Saratoga County at 518-885-8995 prior to January 10, 2014.

Georgie is a handsome boy! Just look at that hair! He is quite active and absolutely goes crazy with catnip!!! He does play quite rough, especially if catnip is involved, so sometimes he will play bite and scratch from excitement. He does like to play with other cats, but he is a rough player. So he would be better living with another cat who is playful and outgoing, and not timid. Come and meet this big guy he may be the cat for you! Louie is a stunning black cat!! He is one to come and see for sure, especially if you love black cats!! He is very playful, and can be bold! He was a bit nervous of getting his picture taken, but warmed up as soon as he knew that he was safe! He is loving, playful, and a great cat! Come and see him!! Snow is a stunning white cat! She came to the shelter as a mom with kits, and that is how she came to the shelter. She now though, prefers no other cats. But she does like humans. Snow is easy going and would be happy in a quiet home, where she can have a nice bed to lay in. She can get very playful and enjoys the feather toys! If you are looking for an only cat, Snow may be the right one for you! Cougar, what a face!! This guy is still a pup, about 6 months now. He is a type of hound mix, and will be large when grown. Right now he is all legs!! Cougar is a typical puppy with lots of energy, and just wanting to play and be with someone. He loves other dogs, and would love to have a playmate! Polo is a about 1 year old and weighs 26 pounds. He is a very handsome, personable fellow that is looking for a home of his own. Buddy is 3 years old. He gets along with adults, children and other animals. He has been well socialized at the shelter and he is partially house trained and pad trained. SPONSORED BY:

OIL PAINTER AND SCULPTOR FREDERICK HOLMAN ANNOUNCES A SHOW OF HIS OIL PAINTINGS at Willows Bistro, located at 3749 Main Street in Warrensburg, New York. The show is open during February and March, and has a Valentines Day reception on Friday, February 14, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free and open to the public. For information, call (518) 803-4034. This show features 30 of Mr. Holmans paintings, including his most recent landscapes alongside a few of his earlier works. Mr. Holman, a landscape architect and planner, started painting in 2005. What began as an interest in refining my drawing skills turned into a passion for exploring the joys of nature and the challenge of the inanimate object through painting, says Mr. Holman. As a landscape architect and planner by profession, the outdoors and creating beautiful, functional spaces have been part of my life for more than 40 years. He has been painting since 2005. A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design Painting and Drawing Certificate Program in 2007, Mr. Holman obtained the technical knowledge needed to use his natural talents in his paintings. He has explored many media, but today oil is his preferred medium to paint still lifes, portraits and landscapes. While much of his work is done in the studio, he enjoys plein air painting as well. The studio is located on the Schroon River in Brant Lake, New York. Mr. Holman is winner of Saranac Lakes Adirondack Plein Air Festival 2012 Artists Guild Award. He is currently Board President of North Country Arts Center and founder of the Art in Chestertown Gallery in Chestertown, New York, where he serves as Gallery Coordinator. He is also a member of Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council (LARAC) and Saratoga Arts. Mr. Holmans work has been shown at these venues and at other juried art shows in the Adirondack region. BREAKFAST: The Johnsonville Rescue Squad located @ 4 River Rd. Is holding their monthly breakfast Sunday Feb. 2nd 7:30-11:00. Cost adults $6 children $3. Menu consists of eggs, French toast, pancakes, sausage, omelets, hash browns, juice, fruit & coffee. For more info call 753-9549 Good time to drop off your returns and check into signing up to volunteer to become a member. MEMBERSHIP DRIVE- The Northeast Antique Truck & Tractor Club, a new organization devoted to the preservation of our agricultural past is having a membership drive on February 9 from Noon until 4 PM, at the Middle Falls Firehouse, Route 29, Middle Falls, NY. We have established a junior membership at no cost for those under 16. The club will plan activities that demonstrate old farm trucks, tractors and equipment at plow days, planting and harvesting days, as well as showing trucks and equipment at organized shows throughout the area. The purpose of this meeting is to attract members who have an interest and wish to participate. All are welcome to attend. EARLY PLANTING HAS ITS BENEFITS, but be sure to weigh your options before heading to the field. The so-called polar vortex gripping much of the country right now has many farmers dreaming of spring and planting season. Thats true for veteran corn grower, Bob Kochendorfer. "Earlier and earlier every year it seems" is how Kochendorfer describes the start of planting season for corn on his south central Michigan farm near Jonesville. He says advancements in seed technology, equipment and agronomic know-how have moved the starting date for corn planting in his area from the end of May, just a generation ago, to late April today. Kochendorfer, other farmers, and agronomists cite a number of benefits associated with early planting. For one, the crop is often able to flower before mid-summer heat and dry soils can take their toll on pollination. Early planting can also help minimize the impact of some insects, lengthen corn growth and development time, and give the crop more time to dry down in the field prior to harvest. The latter is one of Kochendorfers favorite early planting benefits. "A lot of times I can avoid paying so much outof-pocket for drying costs, once corn is in the bin," he notes. Even so, the veteran corn grower is unwilling to pull his planter into the field just because the calendar registers a specific date. Instead, he uses a variety of factors to determine the planting start date, a decision he says that almost always pays off at harvest. Part Science, Part Art Having an adequate soil temperature is Kochendorfers first and primary consideration. He says experience over the years has shown him that soil temperature can support or stall corn emergence and growth. "I typically start planting when soil temperatures reach between 50 and 52 degrees Fahrenheit," he notes. "I also consider the weather outlook for the following week or so. I want to know, if at all possible, that it wont rain or turn cold during that timeframe." Imad Saab, DuPont Pioneer seed researcher, agrees with Kochendorfers strategy. "Early planting carries an increased risk of This weeks ag report is stand loss due to the potential for damaging frosts and cold snaps in early spring, which sponsored by: can then require replanting," he explains. Hoosac Valley Farmers Exchange Saab also cautions farmers who are planting into fields with low organic matter. "With 212 Main Street PO Box 299 lighter soils planted early, be aware of the Schaghticoke, NY 12154 potential for large temperature swings that P-518.753.6911 F-518.753.7554 can affect emergence, especially if nighttime temperatures dip into the 40s," he adds. $ BUYING- HIGHEST PRICES PAID $ Gold & silver jewelry; vintage costume & turquoise. Also could write in Greek with one hand while writing the same in Latin with the other. At 19, studied Law for 5 years starting under George Wythe.. At 23, started his own law practice. At 25, was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. At 31, wrote the widely circulated Summary View of the Rights of British America? And retired from his law practice. At 32, was a Delegate to the Second Continental Congress. At 33, wrote the Declaration of Independence. At 33, took three years to revise Virginias legal code and wrote a Public Education bill and a statute for Religious Freedom. At 36, was elected the second Governor of Virginia succeeding Patrick Henry. At 40, served in Congress for two years. At 41, was the American minister to France and negotiated commercial treaties with European nations along with Ben Franklin and John Adams. At 46, served as the first Secretary of State under George Washington. At 55, drafted the Kentucky Resolutions and became the active head of Republican Party. At 57, was elected the third president of the United States. At 60, obtained the Louisiana Purchase. At 61, was elected to a second term as President. At 65, retired to Monticello. At 80, helped President Monroe shape the Monroe Doctrine. At 81, almost single-handedly created the University of Virginia and served as its first president. At 83, died on the 50th anniversary of the Signing of the Declaration of Independence. Thomas Jefferson knew because he himself studied the previous failed attempts at government. He understood actual history, the nature of God, his laws, and the nature of man. That happens to be way more than what most understand today. Jefferson really knew his stuff. A voice from the past to lead us in the future: John F. Kennedy held a dinner in the White House for a group of the brightest minds in the nation at that time. He made this statement: This is perhaps the assembly of the most intelligenceever to gather at one time in the White House with the exception of when Thomas Jefferson dined alone. Thomas Jefferson said these things: The democracy will cease to exist when you take away from those who are willing to work and give to those who would not. It is incumbent on every generation to pay its own debts as it goes, a principle which if acted on would save one-half the wars of the world. I predict future happiness for Americans if they can prevent the government from wasting the labors of the people under the pretense oftaking care of them. My reading of history convinces me that most bad government results from too much government. No free man shall ever be debarred the use of arms. The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government. The tree of liberty must be refreshed from time to time with the blood of patriots and tyrants. To compel a man to subsidize with his taxes the propagation ofideas which he disbelieves and abhors is sinful and tyrannical.
