Two vacancies for school
board in 2014 applicant
sought to fill one seat

Two long standing and valued
members of the Kohler School
Board have announced that they
will step down from
service for 2014.
Ms. Laura Kohler,
serving since 2006, has
announced that she is
not seeking re-election
when her term expires
in April, 2014. Ms.
Kohler has held a vari-
ety of roles on the
Board including Board
Clerk and Vice President. I am
honored to have served the Kohler
school district for almost 8 years
thru different transitions. Today
Kohler Schools is thriving. We
have a Blue Ribbon award, a bal-
anced budget, robust high school
enrollment, engaged staff and ad-
ministration, and a student body
that is full of spirit. We are execut-
ing our strategic objectives. It
takes everyone working together to
make this district one of the
strongest in the nation. I will al-
ways value my years on the board
and will continue to support the
district as a parent and a commu-
nity member. I am so proud of our
accomplishments as a school and
community. Thank you for this
opportunity. said Ms. Kohler.
Mr. John Suralik, serving on the
Board since 2008, has also decided
to step down from the Board. Mr.
Suralik said I have had the privi-
lege of serving our community for
the past six years as a member of
the Kohler School Board. I am
proud of the manner in which the
District has
built on the
legacy of the
K o h l e r
Schools dur-
ing this time.
While there is
more to ac-
complish and
always will
be, I believe
the District has strong momentum.
Progress has been made on a num-
ber of fronts, including leadership,
curriculum and finances. Who
would have thought we would be
discussing the challenges of record
enrollment? I want to thank the
teachers, administration, staff,
families and residents for their past
support, and now look forward to
supporting the school as a commu-
nity member.
Mr. Suralik has served as Treas-
urer for much of his tenure; his res-
ignation is effective immediately.
Both members have served the
community through an important
period of transition and growth in
our school. During their tenures,
the school has expanded its class
offerings including the addition of
four high school Advanced Place-
ment classes. The school has in-
vested in technology establishing
the Digital Learning Center,
adding mobile laptop computers
labs, and implementing a BYOD
(bring your own device) technol-
ogy policy. The position of Direc-
tor of College and Career
Advising was created to
guide our students as
they navigate their post-
high school decisions.
Phase 1 of the Ebben
Field renovations was
completed and phase 2 is
well under way. As of
September, 2013, our
total school enrollment
has grown to 735 students. Our
District Finances are solid and our
school culture is strong.
The Kohler School District has
always emphasized academics and
has earned Wisconsins #1 ranking
in average ACT test scores on three
occasions since 2006. In 2013,
Kohler High school was recog-
nized as a National Blue Ribbon
school by the US Department of
Education. Kohler was the only
public high school in the state of
Wisconsin to earn this prestigious
award.
The Kohler community has a
history of talented community
members ready to serve. Since
2006 and 2008 respectively, Ms.
Kohler and Mr. Suralik have pro-
vided their experienced leadership
and commitment to the District.
The School Board would like to
thank them for their service.
Looking forward, we are excited
for other engaged and dedicated
individuals to serve on the Board.

application to fill
vacancy
The Kohler School Board is ac-
cepting applications to fill the
Board vacancy resulting from John
Suraliks recent resignation. Inter-
ested candidates must submit a let-
ter of interest and short resume to
Paula Anderson, Assistant to the
Superintendent, by 4:00 p.m. on
February 14, 2014.
On March 3, the Board will hold
an open meeting to interview can-
didates. At this time, each candi-
date shall present their
qualifications to the Board and
then answer a short series of ques-
tions. The Board will then conduct
a confidential paper ballot vote.
The candidate receiving the major-
ity of the votes will be accepted
onto the Board.

with any questions.
Laura Kohlers vacant seat will
be filled by the winner of the
spring election in April. Christina
Koberstein is the sole candidate
whose name will appear on the
ballot.

The Kohler Police Athletic
League will be selling tickets for
its annual brat fry to be held Sun-
day, February 16 from 11:30 a.m.
- 6:00 p.m. at the Kohler Village
Firehall. Each ticket is good for $1
in trade for food at the brat fry
(carry-outs available). Brats, burg-
ers, chicken sandwiches, potato
salad, beans, desserts, and drinks
will be served.
Separate raffle tickets will be
available for purchase at the brat
fry for great prizes such as $100
Kohler gift cards.
Proceeds from the event go to-
ward KPALKohler youth pro-
grams. Please watch for your
neighbor members and youth who
will be selling food/beverage tick-
ets door-to-door and at various
other locations for this important
event.

Lori Gregoire, the manager of
the Petro Center, 3801 Superior
Ave., Sheboygan, is proud to pres-
ent Kohler Elementary school with
a $500 grant from ExxonMobil
Educational Alliance Program.
Lori worked with Quynh True-
blood, the principal of Kohler El-
ementary School and Paula
Anderson to make the grant possi-
ble. The grant is one of 2,400 made
available by ExxonMobil to
schools across the country. Petro
Center, an ExxonMobil retailer, is
proud to be part of the community,
providing an investment in our
youths future.
Kohler Elementary School will
be using the grant money to pur-
chase a Jeopardy game that Debra
LaDuke and other teachers can use
to teach Science and Mathematics.
Ms. LaDuke can write her own
questions for the game, which she
can use to review before testing.
The game can connect to either
classroom tvs, interactive white
boards, or digital projectors.
Teachers believe in making learn-
ing fun. Kohler School is known
for its academic excellence.
Kohler alumni Peter and Kristin
Guske, owners of Petro Center #5,
met stringent eligibility criteria be-
fore applying for and being
awarded this grant. Part of the
process included striving to pro-
vide ExxonMobil customers with
superior service at Petro Center #5.

approaches, new lovers
anxiously await their
first romantic holiday to-
gether, their hearts aflut-
ter with anticipation.
But what about couples
who have already with-
stood the test of time,
whose passionate flames
of love have crackled
down to cozy embers?
How can they keep their
spark alive?
Swing Dance, a
comedy by Lynda Martens that is
celebrating its worldwide premiere
at Memories Dinner Theater Fri-
day, February 7, takes us inside the
lives of a longtime married couple
facing this very challenge, with hi-
larious results.
Walter (played by Jim Jaques)
and Vicky (Pat Forkner) are des-
perately trying to liven up their
dusty marriage. They employ a va-
riety of techniques, from pharma-
ceutical to spiritual to physical
attempts, but their relationship
could never have been prepared for
the bombshell that Vickys sophis-
ticated business partner Dante
(Joaquin Hernandez) and his wife
Jasmine (Lori Minetti) drop during
dinner one night.
The story explores how marriage
is an ever-changing and evolving
entity that requires effort and care
to maintain. The playwright,
Martens, is a Canadian marriage
and family therapist whose profes-
sional experience provides great
inspiration.
Keeping the spark alive is dif-
ficult at many stages in a couple's
life, she explains. The spark dies
when we stop actively loving our
partner, and when we stop being
curious about each other We are
all growing, changing creatures
and we can discover each other in
little ways every day.
Swing Dance runs February
7th through the 16th and is directed
by Heather Hernandez. In honor of
Valentines Day, Memories is

The UW-Extension Landscape and
Grounds Maintenance Short
Course returns in February 2014.
This four week short course is in-
tended for landscapers, parks and
grounds maintenance profession-
als along with horticultural enthu-
siasts interested in learning more.
It will help keep you and your em-
ployees up-to-date on current plant
diseases, insect issues, perennials,
turf care, as well as urban tree and
shrub care.
This years short course will be
held at Sheboygan County UW-
Extension, 5 University Drive,
Sheboygan, on February 7, 14, 21
and 28, from 1:00 to 4:00 p.m.
UW-Extension is now located on
the UW-Sheboygan Campus. A
map and directions can be found

The registration fee for the en-
tire short course is $40.00 per per-
son. If 3 or more individuals from
the same organization attend all
four sessions, the cost is reduced

Colin Fessler wins Kohler Schools
National Geography Bee

Kohler sixth-grader Colin Fessler
has moved one step closer to win-
ning a $25,000 College Scholarship
after winning the first round in the
National Geography Bee. On Janu-
ary 13, Fessler competed against
nine other contestants at the school-
level Bee two from each grade
level in 4th thru 8th grade.
The school-level Bee is the first
round in the 23rd annual National
Geography Bee, which is sponsored
by Google. Sudents answer oral and
written questions on geography.
The kick-off for this years Bee
was the week of November 11, with
thousands of schools around the US,
District of Columbia, and five U.S.
territories participating. The school
winners, including Colin, will now
take a written test; up to 100 of the
top scorers in each state and territory
will be eligible to compete in their
state Bee on April 4, 2014.
The National Geographic Society
will provide an all-expenses-paid
trip to Washington, D.C., for state
champions and teacher escorts to
participate in the Bee national cham-
pionship rounds on May 21, 2014.
The first-place national winner will
receive a $25,000 college scholar-
ship, a lifetime membership in the
Society, and a trip to
the Galapagos Is-
lands, courtesy of
Lindblad Expeditions
and National Geo-
graphic.

21. The program will

tional Geography Bee in response to
a growing concern about the lack of
geographic knowledge among
young people in the United States.

phy with GeoBee Challenge, an on-

which poses five new questions a
day from previous National Geo-
graphic Bees.
The National Geographic Society
is the worlds largest nonprofit sci-
entific and educational organization.
Founded in 1888, the Society re-
flects the world through magazines,
books, maps, television and interac-
tive media.

Pianist Greta Thoresen has won
second place for elementary stu-
dents in the Music Teachers Na-

The Sheboygan Lakers Squirt C
hockey team finished in second
place among eight teams partici-
pating in the Johnsonville Squirt
B/C Lakers Invitational held at the
Sheboygan Blue Line Ice Center
on January 11 and 12. The Lakers
Squirt C team defeated Janesville
C, 2-1 in a sudden death overtime
battle with Owen Hayon scoring
the winning goal. The Lakers went
on to beat Arrowhead C, 4-1, fea-
turing a hat trick by Joseph Gerb-
itz. In the championship game, the
Lakers were outmatched by Win-
netka A/B, 2-9.

It would have been nice to
have gone Dutch treat that
night, but Oostburg did not
want any part of it as they made
us pay with a 57-46 loss at
home on January 10.
The Dutchmen Klomped
their way to a ten point lead
after the opening quarter and
were able to hold it in the sec-
ond to put them up at the half
35-21. Down by twelve at the
end of the third quarter, Kohler
stole the momentum in the
fourth; coming within six
points of capturing the lead
and then the little Dutch boy
took his finger out of the dyke.
Despite the outcome, I know
this is the start of something
new, something great, said for-
ward Jordan Toeller.
Brennan Ladwig led the
Bombers in scoring with 17,
followed by Brett Mueller with
12. Noah Fink played a com-
plete game by contributing six
steals, five assists, five re-
bounds and five points.
Jake Hurlbutt led in scoring
for the Flying Dutchmen with
14, while Andrew Telschow
added another 13.
Even though this game will
go down in the books as a loss,
as Mike Ditka said, Youre
never a loser until you quit try-
ing. The Blue Bombers never
gave up in the second half,
showing desire, discipline, de-
termination and self-sacrifice.
That in and of itself is a victory.

The Blue Bombers came out
strong in the first quarter with a
21-14 lead and kept building
from there, never allowing the
Eagles to take flight throughout
the remainder of the game.
We worked together tonight
as a team, said Bomber

ball well, and Phils the type
that knows who to get the ball
to and when to get it to them.

throughout, but Elkhart Lake

final frame for the win.
We played hard, but were un-
able to execute the game plan
for the win, said forward Cody
Gartman.

and Brett Mueller added 10 to

HISTORIC PHOTO
PROJECT
We are very lucky to have in our
library a rich collection of his-
toric photos dating back to the
1920s. Unfortunately they are
not organized or labeled with
dates or names.
We would like to fix this problem
but we need your help. If you
can make it in to the library, we
can have you look through some
photos and hopefully put some
names with the faces. If you
cant make it in, we can certainly
make copies for you (about 24 at
a time) and deliver them to you.
The library has applied for a
grant to digitalize the collection
so that people from all over can
enjoy this collection.
LEGO CLUB
The library is interested in start-
ing a Lego Club for kids. We are
looking for donations of Lego
blocks to start our collection. If
you have unused kits in your attic
or basement and youd like to
help grow this new program,

The annual WASB-WASDA-WASBO State Educa-
tion Convention will be January 22-24, 2014 in
Milwaukee. A delegate is needed for the meeting
on January 21, 2014.

The National Blue Ribbon Flag Raising Ceremony
will take place on December 10, 2013.
Superintendents Report (Quynh Trueblood)
The National Blue Ribbon ceremony in DC shines a
spotlight on Kohler Schools as a district of distinc-
tion and example. We look forward to a commu-
nity celebration tomorrow morning to raise the flag
in honor of our collective efforts and extraordinary
achievement.
The Kohler School Friends hosted the most suc-
cessful craft fair. Record attendance, student
showcase of music talent, and school community
volunteers made for new highs. Special thanks to
chairwoman Vicki Friske, co-presidents Beth Ten-
gowski and Sonja Heins, music teachers Lori
Hucke, Wendy Kukla, and Rich Tengowski, and dis-
trict faculty and staff for set up and cheerful help.
Senate Bill 51 passed and Assembly Bill 489 looks
to increase the graduation requirement in math and
science from 2 credits to 3 credits. While Wiscon-
sin currently has the lowest math and science
graduation requirements in the Midwest, the major-
ity of Kohler High School students earn 3 credits of
math and science.
I earned certification as an Educator Effectiveness
Evaluator. This certifies my skills as a master rater
of the Charlotte Danielsons Framework for Teach-
ing Domains 1 and 2 (observable components).
Ratings of professional practice are based on de-
fined critical attributes and alignment of evidence.
Most importantly, the process of moving forward
will enhance and elevate professional practice.
Principals Report (Lori Neurohr)
Elementary News
In first grade, students made Math Fact Family Trees
and Elves that will hang with a writing they com-
pleted. The students wrote about a job they would
like to apply for at the North Pole. Students want to
be Santas Assistant, Toy Makers, Cookie Makers,
and other various jobs at the North Pole.
The third graders are writing personal narratives. To
have it be meaningful for the children, they are writ-
ing about a Christmas memory or activity they do
with their families. Unbeknownst to their families,
these will also serve as a gift to give
this Christmas. They are also writing about the New
Year wishes for the year. Students decided to bring
canned goods to donate to Salvation Army to help
people who are less fortunate.
Mrs. Kukla has been very busy preparing for next
weeks elementary music program titled Here we
Come A-Caroling. This will be held on Thursday,
December 19th at 2:00 in the theater. Please come
to sing along to some classic Christmas songs and
finish as always, with Let There be Peace on Earth.
Middle School News
Laura Multer and Nicole Nevers are collaborating to
provide a tier 2 intervention for study skills for mid-
dle school students. A group of 30 middle schoolers
had 3 or more missing or late assignments, overall
grades of Ds and/or Fs in one or more classes.
Nicole Nevers has provided them weekly with miss-
ing assignment sheets while Laura has been using
the SOAR curriculum to teach them skills such as
setting priorities, making goals, using a planner,
managing their time, etc.
Mr. Bayens seventh graders are beginning a unit on
the Legislative Branch of the U.S. government. Stu-
dents will be creating political cartoons and con-
ducting research for a role playing a senate hearing.
The middle school teachers conducted a little experi-
ment by placing dotted lines in the middle of the hall-
ways. This was done to encourage students to stay
on the right hand side, keeping our hallways
safer. There are even round-abouts on the corners!

What is the World Affairs Semi-
nar?
The World Affairs Seminar
(WAS) is a unique interactive ed-
ucational program developed by
Rotary District 6270 for high
school students, ages 15-18. The
vision is to build global leaders
and citizens through an interna-
tional seminar with an innovative
academic program and numerous
recreational activities that foster
interaction and understanding. It
is held on the campus of Carroll
College in Waukesha, WI.
Peace through Understanding is
the WAS motto. The focus is cur-
rent global topics and trends. The
week-long experience provides an
opportunity for U.S. and interna-
tional students from a variety of
backgrounds to discuss issues in a
non-threatening environment.
They experience new and differ-
ent ideas and viewpoints brought
forward both by their colleagues
and by world renowned experts.

Are you or someone you know getting consumed
by texting? Are you or someone you know still
texting while driving even though it is now illegal
in Wisconsin? Many of us think of ourselves as
good drivers, but those of you who text and drive
are 23 times more likely to be involved in a crash
than someone that isnt texting. Sometimes we
think that what is going on in our lives is the most
important thing. Things can go bad real quick
when you are distracted. A distracted driver is a
dangerous driver on the roadways for everyone.
There is enough to be watchful for when driving,
let alone being distracted by phone calls or tex-

Dont forget that if you are planning to go away
on spring break or at any time during the year, that
you may have the Kohler Police Department
check your house while you are gone. Residents
can now request a vacation check on-line through
the Kohler Police Departments web page, by
stopping by the department or calling. If you call

message too. In your message just include your
name, address, duration of your vacation and any
