MATERIALS 6.1 6.2 6.3 The materials / system required for painting shall be as per the project specification. Paint material shall be provided from approved manufacturer or their authorised dealer only with material test certificate including BTC and Date. Paint whose life has expired should be removed from store and site.

6.0 6.1

METHODOLOGY The sequential activities and corresponding tasks are detailed below: Equipment: Sufficient quantity of tools, equipment and consumables shall be mobilised at site but not limited to the following: Hand tools, hand brush, air compressor, scaffolding materials, spray gun, hose pipe, mechanical agitator, hygrometer etc. Surface preparation shall be cleaned as specified in the Tender Document. Mechanical cleaning shall be carried out using mechanical tools, chipping, hammers, grinding wheels or rotating steel wire brushes. Excessive burnish smoothening of surface shall be avoided. During cleaning, mill scales shall be removed by clean rags. Manual or hand tool cleaning shall be carried out for field joints or where other methods are hazardous and where safety problems limit the application of other surface preparation procedure. Blast Cleaning: The surfaces shall be blast cleaned so as to get surface finish of SA 2 grade. Painting Storage: Paint shall be supplied from the paint store on first in first out basis. The paint storage shall take into the manufacturer recommendations. Batch certificate shall be recorded and date of manufacture checked against every batch & type of paint. Paints shall be procured from approved vendors only. Paint Mixing: Paint will be checked when opened and also before mixing. Painting Inspector / vendor representative will ensure the adherence to paint manufacturers instructions. Only thinners of the type and quality specified shall be used. Painting Procedure Mixing and Thinning Thinner will be used as per manufacturer recommendation. Type of thinner will be used as per manufacturer's recommendation The left out paint will be preserved in a drum with tight cover and shall be used as per self life given by manufacturers. Only paint brands and colour as specification shall be used for painting and these shall conform to the relevant paint schedule. Materials test certificate for each batch of primer and paint will be submitted for review. The paint manufacturer's recommendation shall be followed for mixing, thinning, storage, application of paint, drying time and weather condition. Coating Applications: Paint applications shall be carried out by either conventional spray, or by hand brush as per recommendation of manufacturer. If there is rain just after application, before drying then protection will be done by covering with tarpaulin. Area not to be painted and shall be protected suitably. i. Welded joints of the pipe (During shop painting) ii. Machined and threaded surface. iii. Flange faces will be sealed prior to painting. iv. Name plate.

Surface shall not be coated in rain, high humid condition, when the steel surface temperature is less than 5F above dew point when the relative humidity is greater than 85% or when the temperature is below 40F and when the ambient temperature is below the paint manufacturers recommended temperature. Blast cleaned surfaces shall be coated with one complete application of primer as soon as practicable but in no case later than 4 hours after blast cleaning. Each coat shall be in proper state of dryness before the application of succeeding coat. Paint film thickness shall be maintained as indicated in painting system and the painted surface shall be free from defects. All runs and sags shall be brushed out immediately or the paint shall be removed and surface repainted. Colour coding & identification of pipelines, equipments, etc shall be done as per project requirement, specification and standard. Spacing of color coding shall be as per Contract / Good engineering practice. Flow direction shall be painted with contrast colours to the main pipe colour, product names shall be marked at pump inlet, outlet and battery limits and any other location as per client's requirement in bold, visible from a specified distance. 6.8 Inspection Paint manufacturer instructions shall be followed as practicable at all times with specific emphasis for Storage. Surface preparation. Mixing. Application & recommended intervals. Checking of DFT of various intervals as per the standards specification. The shelf life of paint. Cleaning inspection Prior to cleaning, the surface shall be examined for signs of contamination. Visual inspection shall be carried out to detect any sharp edges, weld spatter or visible laminations. In case of lamination, it shall be brought to the notice of the Engineer-Incharge before proceeding further. All the materials to be cleaned shall have a release note in the inspection format duly signed by the QC Eengineer. Painting Inspection All the painting instruments like DFT meter (Elco-meter), temperature indicators, thickness measuring instruments etc., shall be calibrated before use. Priming or painting shall be carried out only after obtaining a release note from the painting inspector. The painting inspector will record for carrying out the subsequent layers of painting. Certificates & batch nos. of all paint material used shall be reviewed & documented. Complete set of materials test certificate shall be submitted to EIL for review and record. Dry film thickness shall be measured after each coat by the Contractors Inspector using an Elco-meter.
