Combustor Insulation

Gasser Elfaham Rotating Equipment Engineer at The Egyptian Natural Gas Company (GACO) Top Contributor Why GE doesn't consider the insulation of the combustion chambers in their gas turbines. it should increase the DT for the same fuel amount. Siemens SGT is well insulated, and fuel efficiency is well noticed!

Tanveer Tanveer qidwai SENIOR GENERATION ENGINEER at Saudi Electricity Company instead of Insulation for the combustion chambers GE USE TO Gasket which is metallic type and replace at every interval of any Inspection , further the combustion take place in separate combustion chamber where as Siemens has combustor away from the combustion of the turbines like silo , Hence the difference is GE get Temp difference at the Turbines without issue any Temp rise and gain , inside the Combustion Zone , so no need to cover from any anythings like Siemens .

Zak Zak Razak Principal Technologist at Rolls Royce plc Agree with Tanveer. The heat released during combustion is many many orders of magnitude greater than any heat loss to the surroundings. Thus the combustion process in a gas turbine is largely adiabatic. That said I would not touch a combustor whilst it is running. However, I am interested to know how much better is the Siemens engine compared with the GE engine in thermal efficiency and what type/model are they? Cheers, Zak

Pierre Pierre Biehler Principal Engineer - Engineering department On most of the gas turbine the compressor exhaust air is used to cool the combustion parts and the cans... So the combustion gases are not in contact with the external air through the casing. So the heat transfer to consider is between compressor exhaust and ambiant air!. The impact is less than you imagine..... In addition GE has added insulation on the last gas turbines developped... Check on 7series.
