EBVS EXPLAINED
An animals breeding value is its genetic merit, half of which will be passed on to its progeny. While we will
never know the exact breeding value, for performance traits it is possible to make good estimates. These
estimates are called Estimated Breeding Values (EBVs).
In the calculation of EBVs, the performance of individual animals within a contemporary group is directly
compared to the average of other animals in that group. A contemporary group consists of animals of the same
sex and age class within a herd, run under the same management conditions and treated equally. Indirect
comparisons are made between animals reared in different contemporary groups, through the use of pedigree
links between the groups.
EBVs are expressed in the units of measurement for each particular trait. They are shown as + ive or - ive
differences between an individual animals genetics difference and the genetic base to which the animal is
compared. For example, a bull with an EBV of +50 kg for 600-Day Weight is estimated to have genetic merit
50 kg above the breed base of 0 kg. Since the breed base is set to an historical benchmark, the average EBVs
of animals in each year drop has changed over time as a result of genetic progress within the breed.
The absolute value of any EBV is not critical, but rather the differences in EBVs between animals. Particular
animals should be viewed as being above or below breed average for a particular trait.

Callendale Simmental Stud was founded in 1973 with the first Simmental calf born in Australia presenting
itself on 10 January. This followed the insemination of around 300 Hereford cows in the Autumn of 1972.
The Callendale herd consisted of Hereford cows which had been performance recorded for 8 years and only
the A herd was used for the Simmental program. Semen was imported from the Scottish Milk Marketing
Board who had purchased bulls from Germany. These were Scottish Neff, Scottish Hope, Scottish Marquis,
Scottish Herod, Scottish Neptune and Scottish Pride all well credentialed cattle. In following years bulls
were purchased from New Zealand and imported into Australia.
In February 1974, Callendale Simmentals, together with four other studs (Congeith, Glengeith, Nangwarry
and Killanoola) held the first Simmental infused sale at the Mt Gambier racecourse featuring 72 bred
heifers, 13 bred bulls and 2 pure bred bulls. Callendale heifers topped the sale at an average of $1000.
The bulls averaged $400.
More recently, polled semen from Bavaria and Canada has been used with the purchase of powerhouse
Bull Corinda Downs Acute (frame score 7.7 and EMA of 140) has given the herd a chance to produce well
muscled structurally sound bulls and females with frame who will no doubt have a positive influence on the
Callendale herd.

This years bulls are predominately polled as we strive to breed a 100% polled herd. We want to get to a point where
we can guarantee our buyer polled progeny.
The sires of this years sale bulls are all polled and represent some of the most productive cattle from Bavaria and
Canada. These bulls have produced soft coated easy doing cattle with good EMAs and very good IMF percentages.
We would expect these traits to be reproduced in their progeny.
We have heard only positive comments from purchasers over the last few years and those buyers have reported good
weaner sale results. Our own vealers have made up to 190c/kg this year.

Nawarra Simmentals along with the stud prefix Skillogalee was brought in 1997 and is now situated in McLaren
Flat, South Australia. We chose Simmentals for their impressive attributes they have to offer for a variety of markets.
We run 40 Simmental breeders and also 60 Simmental infused females.
Over the years we have had a lot of success in the show ring with the 2001 Supreme Simmental exhibit, a number of
Grand champion females and also in the paddock topping a number of vealer markets with our Simmental infused
steers and heifers. With our commercial herd we retain a number of females each year and use our own sires.
Recently we have begun to branch off and started breeding Sim-Angus bulls and females this is only new and we
look forward to offering them alongside our purebred Simmental bulls and females in the future. At the moment we
are using our own SimAngus Sire Future Reference. He is an exciting young sire out of one of our elite Simmental
cows and sired by Banquet Zinco.
We are also extremely impressed with our new sire Bokara Emulations first drop of calves on the ground and cant
wait to showcase them in 2013. Emulation has put some tremendous thickness and muscling into his calves and we
are very happy with his progeny. This year we also purchased a new POLL sire Wormbete Fraser and look forward to
getting his first calves in 2013. Fraser is a very structurally sound bull that has the strength of poll genetics through-
out his pedigree that includes the proven sire P.R.P. Douglas. With these attributes we hope to provide our clients
the opportunity to obtain some very structurally sound and impressive weight for age cattle.
This year at the Inaugural Callendale Simmental Invitation Sale we are offering four impressive bulls with 3 of them
polled and one scurred. We are also excited to offer a select line of unjoined Simmental infused females that are
from our own commercial females that have produced many top priced vealers.

functional cattle with softness, muscling, temperament and soundness have always been at the forefront of
the breeding program. These basic principals have not changed since the stud was purchased in 2010 by
Emily and Scott Davidson with the stud being relocated to Marcollat. The stud joins the Davidsons
commercially focused sheep and cattle operation that includes the property at Marcollat, cropping and
feedlot property at Snowtown and a pastoral property north of Hawker in the Mid North.
Progeny this year are from of our outstanding figured $10,000 Sire Woonallee Destiny D18. His progeny
are dark red, solid in colour with 100% pigment and great carcass attributes. Other sires include LBR
Crockett R81 whos calves are solid in colour and have great performance attributes. Bulls offered here
are a portion of our drop with others being available for private selection on property.
