The following story is based on articles that appeared in the London press in 1983. Even though the house was badly in need of decoration and repairs, the Longs decided to buy it. It was rather big, the price was very reasonable, and it was in a part of London not too far from the centre. Both Mr. and Mrs. Long had jobs in the City, so this was important. There was also a good school nearby for their six-year-old daughter, Jane, to go to. It was not until later that they discovered who the house had once belonged to and the terrible things that had happened there. The first sign of trouble came when they had the house redecorated, just before they moved in. The workmen who did the job refused to work in the house after dark. A few months later, when the Longs started living in the house, they noticed how cold the rooms were, even if it was in the middle of a long summer. Not long after that, their daughter began waking up in the middle of the night, screaming. She said she could hear strange voices and that they belonged to dead people. At first we thought she was just having nightmares, but then my husband and I heard strange noises as well, Mrs. Long said. Sometimes they both heard more than just strange noises. One night, just before George and I went to bed, we heard a womans voice that seemed to come from nowhere. Shortly after this, Mrs. Long happened to learn from a neighbour more about the history of the house. It had belonged to Gordon Taplow, one of the last men to be hanged in England. He had been found guilty of the murder of three different women, and was suspected of having killed several more. He had killed the women in the house. After his arrest and execution in 1959, the house was bought and sold several times, but nobody ever lived in it for very long. Months, and even years, passed without anybody living in it at all. Mr. and Mrs. Long are convinced they know the reason for this. What happened to the bodies of the women the man is supposed to have killed? He must have buried them somewhere. We think it was the garden. The house is haunted by their ghosts. Neither my husband not I are superstitious. But what other possible explanation is there? Mrs. Long says. Although the place dug up parts of the garden more than twenty years ago and found nothing, the Longs want them to do the job again, this time more thoroughly. Mrs. Long recently had an interview with a police inspector about this. He was very polite but I could see he thought I was just being hysterical. But if they dont do it, well have the job done by someone else, even though we can hardly afford it, she says.

At a Hotel
Last autumn I spent a week at a big hotel in London. It was one of those modern hotels where every room is the same size and has the same furniture, and looks like every other room. My room was 311 on the third floor. One night, quite late, I got back to the hotel after a very good dinner with my friends. I walked into the lift and pressed the button. When the lift stopped I got out and walked to my room or what I thought was my room. When I opened the door I was astonished. A man was pointing a gun at a woman sitting in an armchair, and the woman was saying in a frightened voice, Please, dont shoot me!. I turned round, ran along the corridor and down the stairs I darent wait for the liftand found the night porter in the hall. Quick, I cried, someone is being murdered in my room. Controlling his surprise he came back with me, but when we opened the door of 311 the room was empty. The porter looked at me strangely, said, I think, sir, you had better go to bed, and left. I was too confused to protest, and thinking that I must have had too much to drink I followed his advice. At least, I thought, I havent heard a gunshot. The next morning I made some inquiries, and the explanation was really quite simple. I had gone to room 411 on the floor above, where a famous actor and his wife had been rehearsing a scene from their new play. When I told them that it was I who had burst into their room, they laughed and gave me a ticket to see the play on the opening night.
