February 2014
Every year each of us celebrates a birth-
day. Some birthdays seem to receive more
notice than others. When someone cele-
brates their golden birthday (their age cor-
responds to the number of the date of their
birth, e.g. 25 years old on the 25
th
or 6
years old on the 6
th
); or they reach age 16
(old enough to drive) or 21 (considered an
adult) or 65 (age of retirement) those
birthdays seem to receive more attention
and celebration.

This year St. Marks is celebrating the
160
th
anniversary of the founding of our
congregation. We had a big celebration in
2004 when we celebrated the 150
th
anni-
versary of our congregations founding.
This year we will spend some time just
remembering Gods amazing grace in the
history of St. Marks and how he has seen
to it that the good news of free forgiveness
and eternal life through Jesus Christ con-
tinues to be proclaimed in our classrooms
and from our pulpit.

Are there any special plans? We will be
producing a new pictorial directory. Work
on that will begin this month and in March.
You will be receiving a phone call about
having your picture taken and being part of
our new pictorial directory. Since we are
such a large congregation and have six
different worship services every week, it is
hard to know all who are part of the body
of Christ called St. Marks Evangelical
Lutheran Church. The pictorial directory
does help our members to know who fel-
low members are. We encourage all of our
members to participate.

In March and April we will also begin an-
other capital fund appeal for the paying off
of our school building mortgage. The
theme chosen for this three year campaign
is Staying the Course in Christ Let us
run with perseverance the race marked out
for us. Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the
author and perfecter of our
faith. (Hebrews 12:1b-2a)

It has been six years since we moved into
our new school building. The project cost
us $4.2 million. By the grace of God our
present mortgage is just under $2.4 mil-
lion. We have almost paid off $2 million.
The goal for our new campaign is
$1,250,000. With Gods help and the gen-
erous and cheerful offerings of his people
we wish to raise this amount from May
2014 to May 2017.

We can never thank God enough for the
blessings he has given this congregation
through our Christian School. During the
campaign members will see and hear what
blessings St. Marks School has been to
our congregation and the many opportuni-
ties we have had to reach out to new fami-
lies and children with the good news of
Jesus, the Savior of all.

160 years is quite a milestone. Most organ-
izations, businesses and institutions do not
last that long. But St. Marks is different. It
is a Christian church where our purpose is
to reach the lost with the good news of
Jesus Christ and to help the found grow in
their faith and commitment to their Savior
and Lord.

Pebbles From the ROC...
I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because
of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now (Philippians 1:3-5) It is a wonderful blessing
how our WELS churches and the members of them have been working together so well in regard to our Water-
town Recreation & Outreach Center (THE ROC) for Youth. The passage above fits well the partnership and
fellowship we enjoy in Christ our Savior. We see that unity at our monthly board meetings as we work togeth-
er.

Our board is made up of Don Bartz and Arlyn Boll from St. Johns, Rick Dunham and Pete Westermeyer from
St. Lukes, Todd Morris and Brad Steffen from St. Marks, and Don Frank and Bruce Marley from Trinity
Lutheran Church. The pastor advisors are Pastor Mark Gartner, Pastor Mike Jensen, Pastor Paul Kuckhan, and
Pastor Rodney Warnecke with Pastor Mueller as the ROC pastor/director. Our thanks goes to Harold Peckham
(St. Marks) who finished two terms on the ROC Board and to Don Bartz (St. Johns) and Don Frank (Trinity)
for accepting a second term. We welcome Todd Morris (St. Marks) back to the board and new members, Dan
Timm (St. Lukes) and Bruce Marley (Trinity).

The unity we have is also seen in the continued financial support of the ROC. Many of you give gifts to
THE ROC through your congregation, and the gifts are then periodically sent on to THE ROC as a lump
sum. For this reason, it is impossible for us to thank you personally, but we want to sincerely thank you for
your partnership and cheerful giving and generosity. At THE ROC, during Bible/Talk Time, we regularly in-
clude thanks to God for you in our worship prayers. We have been greatly blessed by you and through
you. Thanks from all of us at THE ROC.

Christian Doctrine: Providence
verse for even a moment, we
would immediately disintegrate
into oblivion!

Specifically, God PROVIDES for
us and all things what we need
in order to live. The eyes of all
look to you [O Lord], and you
give them their food at the prop-
er time. You open your hand and
satisfy the desires of every living
thing. (Psalm 145:15-16) As
surely as he feeds the sparrows
and clothes the lilies, our loving
Lord feeds and clothes us
(Matthew 6:25-34).

He doesnt stop there either.
God also PROTECTS us. If you
make the Most High your dwell-
ing even the Lord, who is my
refuge then no harm will befall
you, no disaster will come near
Many of our nations founding
fathers (John Adams and Thom-
as Jefferson among them) were
Deists. They acknowledged God,
and his creation of the world.
But they suggested that nowa-
days people are more or less on
their own.

Thats certainly contrary to
Scripture! Our Creator assures us
that He continues to rule over
us with divine providence. To
rank pagans, Paul said: In him
[God] we live and move and
have our being (Acts 17:28).
In him [Christ] all things hold
together (Colossians 1:17). In
other words: If God withdrew his
sustaining hand from the uni-

your tent (Psalm 91:9-10). We
might respond: If God protects
us, then why do we suffer pain
or problems? To this our gra-
cious God answers: In all things
God works for the good of those
who love him, who have been
called according to his pur-
pose (Romans 8:28). All kinds
of trials have come so that your
faithmay be proved genuine
and may result in praise, glory
and honor when Jesus Christ is
revealed (1 Peter 1:7).

Finally, Gods eternal grace to us
in Christ makes us confident of
his providence for us: He who
did not spare his own Son, but
gave him up for us allhow will
he not also, along with him, gra-
ciously give us all
things? (Romans 8:32).
Thank Yous
The Watertown Food Pantry sent a thank you for the gift of $324.00. Stats noted a rise
in clients, having served 3,047 families in 2013, of which 474 had never utilized the
Pantry before. More people in the area have fallen below the Federal Poverty Level, and
yet they havent visited the Pantry. All donations received are used to operate the Pan-
try, with the biggest expense being the purchase of food.

Also a thank you arrived from Calvary Academy Ministries in Florida for the monetary
gift for their mission of giving hope to hurting families with children in crisis.

Spanish Outreach...
When its especially cold or snowy on a Sunday evening, Pas-
tors Walther & Dale often remark to one another, Its another
night to test the resolve of our Mexican congregation. Were
happy to say that our Mexican members have grown in Christ
to such a degree that theres hardly a drop-off in attendance,
whatever the weather.

Besides healthy worship attendance, a goodly amount of evan-
gelism continues in the Spanish language. Pastor Walther is
currently instructing Abel & Mayra early on Thursday eve-
nings, and Blanca late on Monday afternoons. (Blanca brings
a lot of children with her to St. Marks School!)

In January, Pastor Walther made one of his twice-yearly pil-
grimages to Luther Prepthis time to invite Spanish 2 stu-
dents to visit our worship services this semester. Spanish 3
students received their official invitation for the year in the
first semester.

Meantime, along with the rest of the church, our Spanish lan-
guage congregation observes Epiphany. This year that in-
volves a study of Jesus miracles and discourses, as recorded
by St. John.

Sunday Bible Studies
We thank God for the many people that he has brought to St. Marks who have the gift of teaching and who have
consented to conduct one of our Sunday Bible studies in the second semester.

Sunday Bible studies are held in room B-2 of the Parish Center every Sunday at 9:00 and 10:30 a.m. We encourage
more of our members to take advantage of this opportunity in the New Year to gather with fellow believers to study
and discuss the Word of our God.

Coming in FEBRUARY, Pastor David Dolan will lead the Sunday Bible Study Classes. These classes will be on
The Unique Book of JAMES Faith in Action. Often one of the major criticisms people have about Christians
is that so many seem to be hypocritical. The letter of JAMES speaks to this criticism by focusing on the subject of
FAITH IN ACTION. After a brief introduction, in our 4-week study we will look at such topics as the following:
Action in Trials and Temptations; Action in Being Both Hearers and Doers Action in Not Showing Favoritism; Ac-
tion in Controlling Your Tongue; and Action in Patience and Prayer. We encourage you to join us starting Feb. 2nd.

L I S TE NI NG 2. 0
Last month, this column highlighted good listening as a means for
Christians to ofer correction through the law, forgiveness through
the gospel, and encouragement toward love and good deeds
(Hebrews 10:24).
Tis month our attention remains on listening, focusing on a
particular aspect of good listening: discernment. Discernment is the art of making
detailed judgments about your experiences.
Not surprisingly, discernment and its root discern appear repeatedly in the Bible. Each
occurrence is connected to wisdom or the fear of the Lord. Believers with discernment
recognize wisdom, value it, and desire it in their lives. Terefore, discernment is a
highly-prized commodity in a believers life.
Te Lord appeared to Davids son, Solomon, and ofered him whatever he wanted.
Solomon could have requested wealth, fame, a long life or another earthly blessing.
Instead, he said, Give your servant a discerning heart to govern your people and
distinguish between right and wrong (1 Kings 3:8). Realizing his own sinfulness,
Solomon asked God for a blessing to his entire kingdom: a ruler with a discerning
heart, able to make decisions based on the absolutes of God and his Word. Te Lord
was pleased with his request, and also granted him
riches, fame, and the ofer of a long life.
First and foremost to believers, discernment is hearing
God speak through his Word. Te psalmist said, Give
mediscernmentthat I may understand your statutes
(119:125). Paul also prayed for the Philippians that
they might be able to discern what is best and may be
pure and blameless for the day of Christ (1:10).
From Gods Word, it is apparent that discernment is
valuable, produces good, and should be desired by
every believer. God, make us not only good listeners,
but discerning ones, too!

school news and notes:
Mr. Kuehl on students and overcoming fears together
What follows is second in a series of
faculty and staf responses when asked
why theyre thankful to serve at your
Lakeside, with stories of what theyve seen
in the lives of students that demonstrates
the distinct value of the investment of time
and resources for the families who choose
LLHS for their children..
Dan Kuehl
teaches
Language
Arts classes,
including
Speech 1,
required for
Juniors
Coming back to Lakeside [Mr. Kuehl
taught at LLHS from 199299, then
returned in 2003] was a blessing I never
envisioned. Te Federation family takes
pride in the school, and we have a special
place in the community and surrounding
area. Te relationships so many students
and teachers develop are life-long.
Taking Speech class is a defnite fear for
some students. One young man in one
particular year was particularly dreading
it. He did what he could ahead of time to
see if there was any way he
could avoid it. Ultimately,
there was no escape.
I could see him trembling
and hear his voice quivering
even during the short,
introductory sentence or
two the students spoke
aloud on day one. When it
was time to give his frst real speech, he
paused repeatedly, became red-faced and
stammered his way through a few minutes
in front of the class. It was probably the
longest three minutes of his life.
What makes this situation memorable
were his classmates. During his frst
speech, no one laughed, smirked or
did anything other than look at him
attentively. When he fnished, they gave
him a loud round of applause and words of
encouragement.
Not only could you see his relief, but
his confdence began to build. Each
progressive speech was a little better. By
the end of the semester, he actually looked
forward to speeches. Tis trembling
beginner had become a comfortable,
confdent guy!
Tis incident is not unusual.
One of the greatest blessings I have
observed at Lakeside is the Christian love
students show toward each other. Whether
someone is going through a difcult or
challenging time or whether he or she is
celebrating a joy in life, other students
always seem to be there to support,
encourage, or rejoice with each other.
Gods love is very much evident in our
students!
Forensics: more than 10% of students have fun,
win awards as they build priceless life skill
Te season has just begun for the Lakeside Lutheran
Forensic Team, and hopes are highwith good reason.
Our team, under the coaching of Mr. Steve Lauber, has
an history of excellence, ranking in the top 5% of teams
in the state each year since 2010. At the April 2013
Wisconsin High School Forensic Association (WHSFA)
State Speech Festival at UW Madison, our team placed
second among 356 teams.
Te season begins early second semester as the team is
chosen and students begin to work on their selections. Te formal season starts with
the challenging Brookfeld and DeForest Tournaments in late January, and moves
through conference, sub-district and district meets, along with other opportunities for
the orators to sharpen their chops. It ends at the state meet in April.
Lakeside is especially blessed to have such a large number of students interested in
being part of this energetic, life-skill building co-curricular. Mr. Lauber has a full team
with 35-40 students practicing in their specialties. Te speaking categories Warrior
orators compete in include:
Moments in History: a 6-min original informative speech about a designated time
period (this year is the 70s)
Farrago: a 10-min. presentation that uses a collage of genres (poetry, stories, speeches,
etc) to communicate a theme or emotion
Demonstration: 10-min. instructive speech that includes the physical activity itself
4 minute: speech on a contemporary American problem
Informative: speech must be an original composition
Special Occasion: max 8-min on a pre-selected theme that speaks to a specifc audience
(this years choices are Family Reunion Speech, an Award Acceptance, or Cemetery
Rededication Speech)
8 Minute: speech like 4-min. but must propose solution or urge adoption of a policy
Prose: reading that involves emotion (e.g., short stories, soliloquies, theme essays)
Solo Acting: humorous or serious memorized skit that uses no props, only a chair
Poetry: 8-min. reading to connote strong emotion
Group Playacting: a group of 25 students act out a 10-min. play
Radio Broadcasting: requires editing 15 min. of content to 5-min. newscast &
commercial, precisely timed
Public Address: same as 8-min. oratory, but state determines topics (this year is Cyber
Bullying, Working Conditions, Legalization of Marijuana or Private School Vouchers)
Storytelling: memorized telling using voices of state-determined topic (stories this year
from or about Africa, about a Game or Competition, about Mismatched or Unlikely Love
or about Coming of Age)
Te top 25 performers will represent Lakeside at the State Meet in whichever
categories Mr. Lauber believes they are the most competitive. Informative, precise,
funny, touching, even scary...if you get a chance to hear our orators, dont miss it!
Honor one another above yourselves. Rom. 12:10
