Marking Schema: Refer to University Grading Regulations (http://www.artsci.utoronto.ca/newstudents/transition/academic/grading) Online Communication: Students are responsible for checking Blackboard and UTORmail regularly. Your oral performance and quiz scores will be posted on Blackboard within two days after each class. The instructor will make announcements regarding the classes via UTORmail or Blackboard. Guidelines Classroom Performance: (1) Lecture: conducted both in English and in Korean, with focus on explanation and analysis of the language. Performance in lecture classes, measured by quizzes, comprises 15% of your final mark. No make-up is allowed for any reason. Up to two quiz scores of zero due to absence can be dropped when the main instructor is notified of the absence in advance or in cases of medical emergencies after the class with proper documentation. To verify your absence for medical reasons, please submit a medical certifcate note to your college registar and ask them to send an email to the main instructor. Students are required to stay for the full lecture class; a score of 0 will be given for the quiz if you leave before the class ends. (2) Tutorial: conducted entirely in Korean, with focus on performance and application of the assigned conversation with culturally proper manners. In tutorial classes, we practice handling various realistic situations using the language, based on what you have prepared for that class hour through self-managed work at home. Performance in all tutorial classes comprises 20% of your final mark. No make-up is allowed for any reason. Up to two tutorial scores of zero due to absence can be dropped when the main instructor is notified of the absence in advance or in cases of medical emergencies after the class with proper documentation. To verify your absence for medical reasons, please submit a medical certifcate note to your college registar and ask them to send an email to the main instructor. There are two types of quizzes: (a) Vocabulary quizzes: Study the assigned vocabulary list in the textbook. (b) Listening & Grammar quizzes: For listening part, study the conversations and narration of each lesson. Also, study listening activities of the workbook. For grammar part, review the grammar points in the assigned lesson. Also study conversations, narration and grammar part of workbook. 2

Homework Assignments: Late Assignments will not be accepted for any reason. Homework can be turned in earlier than the due date. It is wise to do the workbook pages as the grammar points are learned and not do all the pages at once just before the homework assignment due date. Midterm Test: The test covers from L1 to L5. Oral test is taken in the form of interview or role play and marked based upon these 5 components: listening (or comprehension), pronunciation, vocabulary use, grammatical accuracy, and pace. The tasks and details will be introduced in class one week before the test. Final Exam: The exam covers from L1 to L10, and it is held during the Faculty final examination week. Final exam guidelines will be provided during the last week of regular classes. Final Presentation: All students are required to present their oral projects in class on Mar. 31 or Apr. 2. The purpose of the final project is to give you a chance to use Korean in meaningful contexts and to be familiar with Korean culture. 1. Format: Skit performed by a team of 3 to 5 people (You may try something other than skit with instructors prior approval, for example, a short film, PowerPoint presentation on Korea such as history, culture, films, drama, food, etc.) 2. Topic: Unlimited, but something that you can handle with your current Korean language proficiency (using expressions/grammar you learned from class). 3. Script: 3 to 5 pages, double-spaced, either handwritten or typed. (one page per person: 3 people = 3 pages; 5 people = 5 pages) The length of presentation is limited to 10 minutes. 4. Script Due Date: Feb. 13 (One full point will be deducted if not turned in on time.) 5. Evaluation: Based upon the following criteria:
