HERIOT-WATT RESEARCH AND BUSINESS Heriot-Watt is one of the UKs leading universities for business and industry and has a strong reputation for innovative education, enterprise and leading-edge research. Heriot-Watts Focus on the Future strategy builds on the University making valuable contributions to Scotlands economy. The 2008 Research Assessment Exercise rated 50% of research at Heriot-Watt as Internationally Excellent and 87% as Internationally Recognised. We aim to continuously improve on these results. Technology & Research Services staff provide a range of assistance in developing and managing research as well as supporting the Universitys research policies and strategies. Partnerships enable universities to apply their wealth of expertise and knowledge to important business problems. At the heart of KT partnerships is a relationship between a company and expert staff from an organisation applying their knowledge to the development of a company. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships allow Heriot-Watt to develop relevant research and teaching by identifying new research themes. In doing so, the University is able to lead rewarding ongoing collaboration with innovative organisations. Knowledge Transfer Partnerships create a valuable opportunity to supervise and mentor post-graduates working on company-based projects and can contribute to publishing high quality journal and conference pages that have an impact on Scotland and the wider economy. Our consultancy services are unique in that they are specific to individual sectors so that we can marry the best of industry and

academia. We offer consultancy on business development, entrepreneurial and enterprise creation, HR and marketing support. Through our licensing opportunities, our legal team can facilitate contracts from initial concept to commercialisation. ABOUT HERIOT-WATT RESEARCH PARK Heriot-Watt University's commitment to active collaboration with industry is most clearly seen in its creation of a Research Park on the campus at Riccarton. The campus occupies a mature meadow and woodland site on the west side of Edinburgh, just six minutes from the airport and some twenty minutes from the centre of the city by car. It is situated in the green belt conservation area surrounding the city and enjoys a quiet and extremely attractive location which is carefully maintained by the University. The Park occupies a fine and prominent position on the campus, being located immediately adjacent to the main entrance, and between it and the academic buildings/ laboratories complex. This position was deliberately selected to emphasise both the importance of the Research Park and to ensure that it is clearly an integral part of the University community. The Park has been developed with ample pedestrian access and convenient roadways. The University offers the ground lease of sites to meet the individual needs of interested parties, which may then build its own research facilities on site. Alternatively, space in advance laboratory buildings can be leased in units ranging in area from 1,000 square feet upwards. The intention behind the creation of the Research Park is that the sharing of the campus by industry and the University should be a mutually beneficial experience. A MUTUALLY BENEFICIAL PARTNERSHIP Summary of Advantages for Companies The Park is specifically designed to support and encourage new developments based upon research, development and design. Companies located on the Park have immediate access to all of the Universitys facilities with their staffs treated on a par with University staff. The frequent opportunities which the above facilities afford to company personnel for informal contact with relevant academic staff enables them to keep informed of the most recent advances in their fields. Companies are in an excellent position to retain individual members of the academic staff if they so wish, and to sponsor specific research by staff or postgraduate students. Companies are able to identify the most promising of the undergraduates and to be in a most favourable situation to recruit such staff upon graduation.
4

Company staff have access to all the sporting, social and cultural activities of the University community which enables the company to provide a much more stimulating and enjoyable environment than would be possible in other locations. Companies on the Park are in a unique position to attract the most talented recruits to their staff by being able to offer the additional benefits of a stimulating intellectual environment in beautiful surroundings, within easy reach of a cosmopolitan city. Company staff may conveniently be encouraged to undertake specific post-experience courses of study, or enrol for higher degrees, in the University. The company gains a fine location and a prestigious address for its new developments.

Summary of Advantages for the University While an economic rent is charged, this income is not the purpose behind the creation of the Park. The presence of companies and their employees brings many benefits: Widening the horizons of academic life, maintaining a close understanding of the needs of the science-based industry, and a convenient and immediate means of acquiring comment and opinion from industry which can shape the type and content of undergraduate courses. By agreement, and without breach of company confidentiality, University staff may contribute information to, and draw examples from, the research projects of companies thus widening the experience of staff and students. There is opportunity for staff and/or students to undertake specific research at the suggestion of, or under the sponsorship of a company on the Park and for the development of joint programmes of research by mutual agreement between specific departments and companies. The opportunity is there to make a positive contribution towards practical collaboration between University and Industry for the benefit of both.
