Charleston Moves Seeks a New Executive Director: National Search

Charleston Moves, in Charleston, South Carolina, is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that promotes healthy, vibrant communities by advancing policies that encourage safe bicycling and walking. http://www.charlestonmoves.org The board of Charleston Moves now seeks a dynamic, committed, professional Executive Director to lead our next phase of growth and development. About Charleston, SC: Charleston is a vibrant, growing city both rich in history and poised to thrive in the 21st century. In addition to a growing tech and creative industries hub, established universities and medical institutions, and major employers such as Boeing, Charleston offers exceptional quality of life, earning our region numerous accolades for its culinary, hospitality and arts offerings and outdoor recreational opportunities. Charleston Moves has been on the forefront of helping make the region equally attractive and progressive regarding transportation options; our accomplishments include winning a bike-pedestrian path on the stunning Ravenel Bridge. Challenges remain: a recent study by the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce has identified improvements in alternative transportation and improved transportation planning as a critical priority. Charleston Moves seeks a dynamic, experienced advocacy leader to further our vision for a bike-friendly Charleston. Salary: Competitive; commensurate with experience. Range likely $50K to $70K, benefits negotiable. Starting Date: April 2014 Overview: The Executive Director is the Chief Executive Officer of Charleston Moves. S/he will report to the Board of Directors, and is responsible for adhering to our policy of constructive engagement with public officials and the public and to further advance the organization's consistent record of achievement of its mission and financial objectives. The Executive Director serves not only as leader for Charleston Moves, but as public spokesperson and community visionary for bicycle and pedestrian advocacy. The ED should be knowledgeable of and an effective communicator of current bicycle

infrastructure design (NACTO standards, etc) and a persuasive presence with public officials. Management duties include: Work with board to establish organizations strategic priorities and goals; facilitate staff, board and partners staying in sync and on track. Plan, coordinate and lead the daily operations by outlying clear workplans that directly align with CMs strategic plan. Create and maintain effective partnerships with local leaders and national bicycle advocacy groups. Direct effective financial development for Charleston Moves with feasible long-term sustainability plan. Prepare and submit annual operating budgets. Enable effectiveness by facilitating the coordination between all staff and volunteers, supporting each individual in their success, and backstopping projects or tasks as needed. Attend all board meetings and work closely with the board chair to set agendas and prepare reports, as required. Oversee all programs, including bike-sharing (in development), membership, and special events such as Clips Beer and Film Festival.

Qualifications:

Significant experience in leading non-profit organizations. Knowledge of the social and environmental issues related to bicycle/pedestrian infrastructure, transportation, public health, environment, sustainability and a demonstrated commitment to Charleston Moves mission. Experience related to public policy and intergovernmental systems especially with regard to transportation, but must understand interconnections between agencies and levels of government. Proficiency in budgeting and financial management, preferably in a nonprofit environment. Experience in developing and enhancing standard systems and internal processes. Fundraising and working with private, foundation, and government donors as well as enthusiasm for building and maintaining strong relationships with various funders. Public relations, external and internal communications, media relations, and marketing skills.

Outstanding public speaking and written communication skills. Highly competent computer skills and ability to work independently.
