and more, much more than this, I did it my way. And so on. It seems the main message is that I have succeeded in life as long as I did everything for me. There is a backdrop of fear here, something about usually being forced to do everything according to someone else's will, and resenting it. The world and its population are very, very large and it is no surprise that mass production and mass advertising and mass purchasing and mass media give us the feeling that we are just cogs in a giant, international, industrial wheel, worth nothing in ourselves but contributing to the market as long as we do and buy what we are supposed to. So to do it my way is a statement about facing down the great machine and defying it outright. I fight to proclaim my victory.
Becoming Ourselvesd
In the Gospels of the last few Sundays we have been following the story of Jesus early career. He went to be baptized. He moved to Capernaum from Galilee. John the Baptist was killed. He chose his apostles (who somehow knew him as the one to follow). In the ordinary course of things, (last week) we would have heard part of his inaugural address, the beatitudes.* This Sunday Jesus begins to instruct the disciples about how to be his followers. In the Gospel he says: be what you are. If you are salt then dont lose your savor of salt. If you are a lamp then dont put a basket over yourself and make your light invisible. Give flavor. Give light. This is consoling advice. you are to be yourself. But did the disciples who followed Jesus know what it really meant to be yourself"? The First Reading gives a hint. It says, share your bread with the hungry. Shelter the oppressed and the homeless. Clothe the naked. Do not turn away from you own. let your light shine in the darkness. This is how Jesus enlightened the world. He even went to death for it. Is this the meaning of becoming yourself? A big assignment. Today the definition of being myself sounds much more selfish. I will do whatever I want to (as long as it doesnt get on your yard). Take care of number one. If it feels good, do it. And so on. one of the classic songs made popular by Frank Sinatra was I Did It My Way, co-written by Sinatra and Paul Anka. I planned, each charted course, each careful step, along the byway,

am afraid the scriptures assume just the opposite They suppose that every human being is created with a unrepeatable, deep, interior. Rather than fighting to do my own will no matter what, I am built to allow the Spirit of God to find a home deep within my interior space. This is Gods Spirit of love, of respect, of forgiveness. This Spirit is identical with God. you and I are to be at one with this presence. Becoming myself means becoming what I was made to be: a home for the Spirit of Jesus and of God.
Gods love will become us. It will help us find ourselves as what we really are deep down: givers of food, helpers to the homeless, forgiving and loving members of society. In other words, we will become truly ourselves.

The Last Words of Jesus: A Meditation on Love and Suffering by Daniel P. Horan, OFM Book Signing
after Vigil Masses on Saturday, February 22 and Sunday Masses, February 23.
In his preface, Horan writes: In a world that remains irrevocably shaped by the suffering of the human condition, the misunderstanding between groups and cultures symbolized by the horrific events of September 11, we need to hear Christs words anew. He gives us a different look into these words by drawing on works by other noted scholars and spiritual writers, then fashioning a view of these phrases that is contemporary and thought-provoking.
Much has been written on the last words of Jesus, the traditional phrases taken from Scripture that depict the final moments of Jesuss life as he dies on the cross. In this new take on the last words, author Dan Horan brings a fresh perspective to this timehonored meditation as he challenges readers to look at their lives through the lens of Jesus s suffering and death. Yet interlaced with suffering, the focus throughout is on the immense love of God for human beings, shown in the gift of Jesus, God made flesh.
An ideal Lenten companion, especially during Holy Week, The Last Words of Jesus will also serve as a useful meditation throughout the year on the deep love Jesus bore for us in taking on the human condition.
